Fasciculus Geomanticus in quo varia variorum opera geomantica continetur + Questiones Geomatiae Alfakini Arabici Fikii a Platone in Latinum translatae ex antiquo manuscripto [Bound with:] Tabulae geomanticae, seu liber singularis . THREE VOLUMES IN ONE.

Ioannis Davidis Zunneri,, Frankfort 1687 - Volume I & II: 647 pp. Latin text, title printed in red and black, figures, 7 folding letterpress tables, 1 folding letterpress table with small marginal tear at fold and final leaf shorter in outer margin, woodcuts and diagrams, Verona: [Heidelberg?] 1687. [Bound with:] Volume III: Tabulae geomanticae, seu liber singularis de tribus ultimis ex antiquo manuscripto de anno 1535.527, 197 pp. 2 folding tables at rear, contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine, red speckled edges (lightly soiled). Provenance: erased ownership inscription on first title and later annotation on verso of title; from the Giancarlo Beltram Library of Scientific Books. 1693. FIRST EDITION of a compilation of treatises on geomancy including Robert Fludd's Tractatus de geomantia. ‘In the Fasciculus of 1687, besides the works of Fludd and H. de Pisis, were Geomantic Questions by the Arab Alfakinus, translated into Latin by Plato (of Tivoli?) and now first printed from an old manuscript of the year 1535’ (Thorndike). Page 123 is misnumbered 12 as in some other copies of the first edition. A copy of this first work was sold and described as having two engraved plates. Caillet 4035 (‘Ouvrage fondamental de Géomancie’); Cf. Thorndike VIII 482; Wellcome III, 11 (not calling for any engraved plates). Geomancy, from Ancient Greek geomanteía translates literally as "foresight by earth"; it is a translation of the Arabic term ?ilm al-raml, or the "science of the sand". Earlier Greek renditions of this word borrowed the word raml ("sand") directly, rendering it as rhamplion or rabolion. Other Arabic names for geomancy include khatt al-raml and darb al-raml. The original names of the figures in Middle Eastern geomancy were traditionally given in Arabic, excluding a Persian origin. The reference in Hermetic texts to the mythical ?um?um al-Hindi potentially points to an Indian origin, although Skinner thinks this to be unlikely. Having an Islamic or Arabic origin is most likely, since the expansive trade routes of Arabian merchants would facilitate the exchange of culture and knowledge. It is theorised that related systems of divination in sub-Saharan Africa, such as Ifá and sikidy, either were based on or co-developed with Arabic divination systems. ". European scholars and universities began to translate Arabic texts and treatises in the early Middle Ages, including those on geomancy. Isidore of Seville lists geomancy with other methods of divination including pyromancy, hydromancy, aeromancy, and necromancy without describing its application or methods. Like other systems of divination, geomancy has a mythological origin. According to one Arabic Hermetic text, Idris (or Hermes Trismegistus) witnessed the angel Jibril in a dream. Idris asked for enlightenment, and Jibril proceeded to draw a geomantic figure; upon being asked what he was doing, Jibril instructed Idris in the geomantic arts. Keeping this secret, he sought out ?um?um al-Hindi, an Indian king, who then wrote a book on geomancy. This book was passed down through clandestine circles into the hands of Khalaf al-Barbari, who traveled to Medina and converted to Islam by the prophet Muhammad himself. Confessing to knowing a divinatory art, he explained that pre-Islamic prophets knew geomancy, and that by learning geomancy, one may "know all that the prophet knew". Another mythological story for the origin of geomancy also involves Idris. After praying to God that He give Idris easily a means to earn his living, Idris rested one day, bored and without work, and began to draw figures idly in the sand. As he did so, a stranger appeared before him and questioned what he was doing. Idris replied that he was simply entertaining himself, but the stranger replied that he was doing a very serious act. Idris became incredulous and tried to deny this, but the stranger explained the significance of the meaning of the figure Idris drew. He then commanded Idris to draw another figure, and upon doing so the stranger exp [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

This is the first edition of a compilation of treatises on geomancy including Robert Fludd's Tractatus de Geomantia, H. de Pisis' Opus Geomantiae completum in libros tres, and Quaestiones Geomantiae Altakini Arabici. Robert Fludd was an English physician and a prominent Rosicrucian. Geomancy was historically a form of predicting the future or uncovering facts hidden to the inquirer using a number of dots randomly jotted down by the geomancer. Fludd attempted to take this idea a little further and to use its application to unlock the unconscious part of the mind. Consequently, the work is of interest to historians of early psychology.         PHILIPPI A LIMBORCH DE VERITATE RELIGIONIS CHRISTIANÆ: AMICA COLLATIO CUM ERUDITO JUDÆO [FIRST APPEARANCE URIEL ACOSTA]

Gouda; Apud Justum Ab Hoeve. 1687. Contemporary Vellum. 4to. [18], 364, [14] pages. 25 cm. First edition. In Latin. De veritate religionis Christianae. A response to three treatises by Balthasar de Orobio, the texts of which are included. With first appearance of "Urielis Acosta Exemplar humanae vitae. Addita est Brevis refutatio argumentorum quibus Acosta omnem religionem revelatam impugnat, par Philippum a Limborch": p. [341]-364. Written shortly before shooting himself, after his second excommunication, Uriel Acosta “used the interval to write a few pages of what he called ‘Exemplar Humanæ VitæÂ’ (A Specimen of Human Life) , a sketch of his own career. It is almost the only source of information respecting the life of this eccentric and unfortunate thinker, and was published with a refutation by Philip Limborch, a Dutch theologian, as an appendix to his own work, entitled ‘Amica Collatio cum Erudito Judæo, Â’ Gouda, 1687; republished 1847.” (Jewish Encyclopedia 1906) “De Castro's discussions on Christianity with the Dutch preacher Philipp von Limborch were published by the latter in the work entitled ‘De Veritate Religionis Christianæ Amica Collatio cum Erudito Judæo, Â’ Amsterdam, 1687.” (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) . From the library of Irving Levitas, with laid in letter from the bookseller Emil Offenbacher, addressed to him: “First Edition. The larger part of the present volume consists of a discussion on the truth of the Christian religion between Philip Van Limborch, a Calvinist minister and professor at Amsterdam (1633-1712) and a learned Jew (Isaac Orobio de Castro, a contemporary adversary of Spinoza) . The book would be pretty much forgotten today had Limborch not added at the end an extraordinary human document, the autobiography of Uriel Acosta (1585-1640) which is printed here for the first time (pp.341-354: Exemplar humanae vitae) . Acosta, who was born into a Portuguese Marano family, moved to Amsterdam in 1617 where he resumed Judaism, but came soon in conflict with the Synagogue. He was excommunicated, recanted, again defied the authorities, was again excommunicated, and finally submitted to a public and humiliating penance after which he shot himself. Limborch has added an introduction to AcostaÂ’s text, as well as a refutation, which is printed at the end. ” Subjects: Apologetics - Early works to 1800. Apologetics - History - 17th century. Judaism - Controversial literature. Filosofía cristiana. Apologetics. Orobio de Castro, Isaac, approximately 1617-1687. Vellum heavily soiled and warped. Outer edges heavily soiled, endpages somewhat soiled. All text crisp and clean, internally fresh; but outer portions of volume have ostensibly been waterdamaged, with heavy soiling and minor mold. Fair condition. (KH-1-32) .

JOURNAL DU VOYAGE DE SIAM, FAIT EN 1685 & 1686

Sebastien Mabre Cramoisy, 1687 2nd French ed. In contemporary calf binding, somewhat rubbed at extremities, some loss at top and bottom of spine, some age-toning of pages; hinges a little fragile, repaired at rear, but holding. Still a very attractive copy of an uncommon early edition. Bookplate and ownership on endpapers. Important travel account of the embassy of the priest François-Timoléon de Choisy (1644-1724) sent to Siam by Louis XIV with the intention of converting the king to christianity, which did not happen. Choisy's account is very enthusiastic, and even highly coloured. The text is in the form of a diary, and is written in an attractive style, telling about details of the voyage and the experiences in Siam. Two sections of the book deal with their short experiences at the Cape. The book is a classic that has repeatedly been reprinted due to the importance of this particular embassy .

Octavo, contemporary full gilt-paneled red morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $1500.Scarce first collected edition of these three Anglican polemics, handsomely bound in contemporary morocco-gilt.Wake served Richard Graham, Viscount Preston, as chaplain for his embassy to France, where Wake wrote An Exposition of the Doctrine of the Church of England in response to Bishop Bossuet's Exposition de la doctrine de l'église catholique. Wake argued that, ""while he and Bossuet were agreed on 'what is most necessary'—belief in God, in Christ and in the same creeds—they were separated by the innovations of the Church of Rome"" in such areas as papal authority, worship in Latin and the invocation of saints. ""The Exposition was written in France, but it was published only after Wake's return to England, in 1686, the year after James II's accession. Inevitably, its appearance propelled him to the forefront of the Catholic controversy generated by the new king's policies. Over the next two years he produced a sequence of polemical pamphlets, all of which concentrated on the theological differences between the Church of England and the Church of Rome"" (DNB). After the Glorious Revolution brought William and Mary to the throne, however, Wake turned his attention from polemics to preaching and pastoral piety. In 1716, he was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. Folio, period style full brown calf, elaborately decorated spines and boards, red morocco spine label, raised bands. $6500.Third Speght edition of ChaucerÂ’s works, the last edition to be set in Gothic type, with engraved frontispiece “Progeny of Chaucer,” incorporating a full-length portrait of the author and an image of his tomb. A beautiful volume in period-style calf-gilt.“Except for Shakespeare, Chaucer is foremost among writers in the English language” (Bloom, The Western Canon, 105). This third printing of Thomas SpeghtÂ’s edition, which “held sway for well over a hundred years, far longer than any other. It was the text read and owned by Milton, Junius, Pepys, Dryden, and Pope” (Derek Pearsall). This edition marks a highspot of Chaucerian editorship; after it, editorial quality declined, and did not revive until the 1775 Tyrwhitt edition of the Canterbury Tales. This edition is essentially a reprint of SpeghtÂ’s 1602 edition, being the eighth collected edition, and includes for the first time the printing of the conclusions to the CookÂ’s and the SquireÂ’s Tale, then recently discovered, on the verso of the last leaf. The list of “Old and Obscure Words in Chaucer explained” is here marked with derivations, and a glossary has been added translating the Latin and French “not Englished” by Chaucer. Beautifully printed in two columns of Gothic type, with a divisional title to the “Works” containing a three-quarter page woodcut arms and small woodcut armorial diagram on leaf a2v, errata slip pasted over relevant text on G1v. The imprint statement omits mention of printers, since the copyright of ChaucerÂ’s works belonged to the StationerÂ’s Company; the identity of the publisher has been a matter of speculation, based on the initials “J.H.” given in the “Advertisement to the Reader” (leaf b4). The initials may refer to John Harding, who taught Bernard Lintot (publisher of the succeeding edition), but more than likely they identify London bookseller John Harefinch (Ruggiers, 91). Pforzheimer 179. Wing C3736. OwnerÂ’s inscription dated 1838. OwnerÂ’s small inscription to title page. Pencil markings to recto (blank) of frontispiece.Occasional light dampstaining to corners of text block. Beautifully bound in period style calf.

Recueil Historique... des plus celebres architectes

1687. First Edition . (FÉLIBIEN DES AVAUX, J[ean].F[rançois]). Quarto, contemporary full speckled brown calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, burgundy morocco spine label. $1500.First edition of this foundational early French history of architecture and architects from ancient times to 14th-century Europe by leading 17th-century French scholar Félibien des Avaux, an especially handsome wide-margined copy, most rare in contemporary calf. This rare first edition of Félibien des Avaux’s major architectural History reflects his high esteem as one of the 17th-century’s leading architectural scholars. The son of André Felibien, who was court historian to Louis XIV of France and the first secretary of the Académy d’Architecture, Jean François Félibien here highlights defining architectural landmarks in a “collection of biographies of architects… extending from Antiquity up to the 14th century, compiled entirely from earlier literature’ (Kruft, 138). Featured are Egyptian, Babylonian and African masterpieces and craftsmen, landmarks of Greek and Roman architecture, and architectural masterworks of 13th- and 14th-century Europe. “Sebastien Cramoisy, whose device is on the title page, became the first director of the ‘Imprimerie Royale’ in 1640… The headpieces were engraved by Cornelis Vermeulen” (Fowler 119). Woodcut-engraved printer’s device to title page; Privilege du roy dated 1687. Containing woodcut-engraved chapter heading, initials, head- and tailpieces. Text in French. See Avery’s Choice 94.         Traitté de l'aiman. Divisé en deux parties. La prémiére contient les expériences; & la seconde les raisons que l'on en peut rendre. Par M. D***.

Amsterdam: chez Henry Wetstein, 1687. First edition of this beautifully illustrated treatise on the magnet and its uses, dealing with the invention of the compass, magnetic mountains in America, declination and the orientation of the compass-needle in a magnetic field. The plates are etchings by Adriaan Schoonebeek (1658-1705), the pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe and a prolific book-illustrator. They recall Sébastien Le Clerc's Pratique de la geometrie (Paris, 1669), where geometrical diagrams float above fanciful landscapes. In D'Alencé's plates, however, though most of the landscapes and rustic scenes seem unrelated to the scientific content, one or two provide a commentary. For example, fig. 18, illustrated by Hofer, shows a violent explosion with bodies flying in all directions, which Hofer suggests illustrates the magnet's potential. The finely engraved frontispiece is described by Park Benjamin, in his Intellectual Rise in Electricity (London, 1895), as follows. "The lodestone, disposed in a bowl after the mode suggested by Neckam and Peregrinus, and marked with a longitudinal directing line, appears floating in front of the vessel, which the mariner, holding a rudder in one hand and a compass in the other, is about to board. The goddess, who appears to be advising him, points to the Great Bear, represented by the actual animal in the heavens, with the Pole Star situated at its tail, and also to a compass and a dipping needle, while in her left hand she has a sounding line. The idea evidently intended is that the divinity is advising the sailor to avail himself of all these means of guidance. There is also shown on the left a suspended armed lodestone, supporting at one pole a series of keys, and at the other a number of iron plates "this being possibly designed to indicate in some way the strength and consequent trustworthiness of the magnet." Very little seems to be known regarding Joachim D' Alence (1640-1707); even his name is variously given as Dalance, Dalence, Dalence, etc., by different authorities. He is known almost solely because of the present work and his Traittez des barometres, thermometres, et notiometres, au hygrometers (Amsterdam, 1688), a companion volume also charmingly illustrated by Schoonebeck and important because it contains the first suggestion of the use of two fixed temperatures in the graduation of thermometers. Second and third editions appeared in 1691 and 1712, and a German translation in 1690. Brunet 5, 918; Gartrell 10; Wheeler Gift 200; Hofer, Baroque Book Illustration 142. 12mo (154 x 88 mm), pp. [xx], 140, [8] with 33 plates by A. Schoonebeck. Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt with red lettering-piece, gilt supralibros on both covers, hinges and capitals with careful leather restoration (not re-backed), end-papers renewed with old paper.

Wellcome V, p. 305. Krivatsy, n° 12001. DSB, III, p. 479-480.
