Paris: late 18th century - This superb hand-colored engraving, Plate 96, Vue du paysage et de la Maison Royale de St. Cir, from the late 18th century measures 19.75” x 26.75” and is in excellent condition with light foxing in the margins. This engraving illustrates an expansive view of the French countryside around what is now known as Saint-Cyr-l'École. In 1686, King Louis XIV established a school here for young impoverished women from noble families, at the request of Madame de Maintenon the morganatic second wife of the king. Noblemen and women are seen sitting and standing in the clearing, interacting and enjoying the views below. The large school with the blue roof and bell tower is seen in the distance with the town and surrounding areas as well. During the mid to late 18th century, the trend amongst European artists, printmakers and publishers, was to visually record their own country's architectural treasures, and the natural beauty of their gardens. Motivated by national pride, artists and printmakers began to publish views of their most-admired estates and grounds. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside, they were meant to encourage public recognition of national treasures. These prints were meant to be purchased by the English and foreign tourists whom desired a memento of their travels. Louis XIV (1638-1715), the Sun King of France, had grown up during a civil war between rival factions of aristocrats, known as the Fronde, and wanted a site where he could control the French government by absolute rule. Louis settled on the royal huntin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Prague, 1686. Woodcut arms on the recto and verso of the title and engraved arms on pp. [xxxiv] and [xxxv]. Small 4to. [195 x 152 x 11 mm]. [1]f, xxxii, [iv] pp. Contemporary binding of vellum over thin boards, the covers blocked in gilt (gold alloy) to an all-over design with various arms and supporters, birds, amongst foliage, with a cartouche at the centre, containing on the front cover the double-headed Imperial eagle and on the rear a rampant lion. Smooth spine, plain endleaves, gilt edges. (The gold oxidised, remains of two of the original yellow silk ties). Contained within a modern blue cloth drop-over box, lettered down the spine on a black goatskin label. A copy of the officially published resolutions of the 1685-1686 session of the Bohemian legislative body, the Zemsky snem. The British Library has a collection of 41 such publications, the first two dated 1683 and 1694 and the rest being eighteenth century. The Library of Congress has 26 publications dating from 1721 to 1822. This is a fine copy in what must be the official binding. One large and rather crowded block was used for both covers, with the central cartouche separately tooled. The block appears to have been slightly damaged at some stage, as seen in the break in the border on the left-hand side. The gold alloy has oxidised, as is so often the case on these vellum bindings.

VINCENT DE LEIRINS , Traduit Du Latin En François Par De Frontignières
Jacques Le Febvre, 1686. Histoire Religieuse

[EDWARDS Charles] 1627/8-1691?
London, 1686 VG, 1st ed, 1686. In modern full calf (to style), blind edge tooling. Spine, blind tooling, gilt titles to red calf label. Internally, [6], 202 pp, [8], 31, [1], 8 pp, pencil notes to ep, new endpapers, fep has been repaired, title within single ruled borders, ink name erased, some offsetting and creases. Includes an 8 page pull out, text to both sides, Hebraismorum Cambro-Britannicorum Specimen, dated London December 24, 1675, Carolus Edwards, Latin, Hebrew and Welsh phrases, caption title. "Gildas minimus" has a caption title and separate pagination and register. A 2 page Welsh poem. (ESTC R224224 & R5230). Edwards, Welsh-language writer and preacher, published a Latin pamphlet called Hebraismorum Cambro-Britannicorum specimen (1676), which purports to demonstrate the close connection between the Hebrew and Welsh languages, a theme first developed by Welsh authors in the sixteenth century and obviously attractive to a portrayer of Wales as Israel praesens. His other work of note is Fatherly instructions: being select pieces of the writings of the primitive Christian teachers, translated into English, with an appendix, entituled Gildas Minimus (1686). The appendix contains original sermons written by Edwards 'to disswade from Apostacy, and those other Abominations that are like to be very pernicious to these Nations, if not timely repented of' (Edwards, Testimony, 10).

Chaumont, (Alexandre de.)
Paris., 1686.. b/w engraved plates, some folding. Chaumont traveled to Siam in 1685 as Louis XIV’s ambassador. The ostensible purpose of the embassy was to convert the King of Siam to Catholicism, but Chaumont and his Jesuit staff collected much valuable information about the commerce, science, history and religion of the land. Apparently there were two editions of Chaumont’s work. This first edition has six plates, two of which fold. A second edition has different pagination and eight plates. Worldcat cites only the second edition. BMC Cat. Vol V cites this edition and a second 1686 edition published in Amsterdam. Cox cites the English translation and is unaware of this 1686 French edition. Bound in contemporary full calf with raised bands and gilt spine decoration. Cracking and wear to covers, but still solidly bound, with text and plates clean.

435pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Best and last edition, with additions, corrections and a geographical index by Nicholas Lloyd; folio, pp. [10], [726]; text in double column; contemporary full calf neatly rebacked, red morocco label on spine; small hole in A1 causing loss to several letters, else a good, sound copy or better. With the ownership label of DeWitt Starnes on the flyleaf and in the bottom margin of the title-page, who in his Renaissance Dictionaries (Austin, 1954) cites it as a source for Cooper and Holyoke, and calls it "a Latin text devoted solely to proper names" which was in "great vogue from [its initial publication in] 1553 to the end of the seventeenth century."
