BELLORI (Giovanni Pietro)
Romae, Apud Io: Iocbumde Rubeis ad Templum S. Mariae de Pace suis sumptibus, & cura, cum Privilegio Summi Pontificis. 1685. Romae, Apud Io: Iocbumde Rubeis ad Templum S. Mariae de Pace suis sumptibus, & cura, cum Privilegio Summi Pontificis. 1685. Folio, 338 x 225 mms., pp. [x], 20 [21 - 22 divisional title], 16 [2], 15 [16 errata], engraved frontispiece and 92 full-page engraved plates, contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards; joints cracked and front cover holding on for dear life, boards worn. A working copy. The painter, biographer, and antiquary Giovani Pietro Bellori was" brought up in the household of Francesco Angeloni, a well-to-do writer, collector, and antiquarian. It was Angeloni who established the intellectual climate in which Bellori's interests developed. Angeloni assembled, probably with Bellori's help, what was then one of the finest private collections of classical antiquities, important enough to be noted in contemporary guidebooks.... His Notes on Museums, a guide to the art treasures of Rome, which appeared in 1664, contains an addendum on the remains of ancient Roman painting that is said to be the first essay ever written on this subject. Both before and after this date he worked on his Lives of the Modern Artists, which was published in 1672" (Christopher L.C.E. Witcombe: "Art & Theory in Baroque Europe").

BARREME (François-Bertrand).
Johannes Rosini
Amsterdam: Blaviana, 1685. Very Good: Vellum cover with gilt coat of arms: Illustrations throughout: Fold Outs Intact and Awesome. Originally written in 1585 by Rosini, this edition was edited and notated by Thomas Dempster, scholar. Dempster dedicated his edition to James I which won him an invitation to court and a position as royal historiographer A truly outstanding aspect of this volume, though, is the outstanding fold outs and illustrations starting with the title page. This illustrations has it all: Romulus and Remus in the lower right feeding from the wolf and all kinds of Roman symbolism right around the page. There are various illustrations of coinage, a PRISTINE fold-out map of Rome, a couple of great (and again, pristine) fold-outs of gladiators fighting along with a variety of illustrations of smaller bits of Roman cultural artifacts. Written in Latin, the block of the text looks good although the binding is loose at the front (see photos). LIbrary markings inside on front spare facing title page. Vellum cover with gilt coat-of-arms of what appears to be two lions standing on either side of a shield with a fleur-de-lays on top of the shield, the front of it having four lions in quarters facing the same direction atop two white block split by a solid stripe. There is a double linear outline with mitred corners having little vases with flowers in each. The spine has little rosettes in the center of bands with gilt lines separating. Altogether a fascinating piece of history. Very Good Condition: 4to (9 3/4" X 8 1/8" X 2 3/4"), vellum Binding, slightly loose at fro … [Click Below for Full Description]

[De Soto]. [Citri de la Guette, Samuel de Broe].
First French edition of the Relacam Verdadeira -first published in 1557, which is known in a single copy. A rare book consisting of the anonymous eyewitness' account of De Soto's expedition to Florida ad the Southern United States. Furthermore, the work includes the dramatic tale of Juan Ortiz, a member of the Narvaez expedition captured by the Indians and rescued by De Soto. The anonymous Portuguese original is a known in a single copy and is found at the NYPL. This is the first translation into French, made by the 17thcentury French historian Citri de la Guette, to compete with the later Florida del Ynca of Garcilasso de la Vega (published in Lisbon in 1605), considering this less well-known and historically more accurate -and considering the contemporaneity a consistent argument- relation was due for notoriety. It is the basis and inspiration for the English translation of the following year "A relation of the invasion and conquest of Florida by the Spaniards" (1686). The NUC mistakenly records an edition of 1589 (actually the 1699 reprint by Couterot). "The English translation, the first account in the English language of the settlement of California, is inferior to the French edition being "erroneous as to numbers, distances, and names of places"-- Sabin." (Kenneth Nebenzahl). Sabin, 24864. Bell, H186.

John Wallis
London: Richard Davis, 1685. Peeling leather and scuffs some foxing bookplates and writing Fold-outs intact. John Wallis was a mathematician who developed a variety of theories that led to the development of modern calculus. He is responsible for the infinity sign and spent most of his life studying mathematical theory. This particular book, "Treatise on Algebra", is Wallis' only book to be published in English and is the first recorded effort to give a graphical interpretation of the complex roots of a real quadratic equation. contains several fold outs depicting various angles and mathematical relationships as well as pages of equations. This volume has "A Treatise of Algebra" and "A Treatise of Angular Sections"."A Defense of the Angle of Contact" " A Defense of the Treatise of the Angle of Contact" and others. There is a tear at the top of the first fold out just past where the engraving is attached to the paper. And I have found some marginalia in the last section of the book in the section on trigonometry. seems to be some homework or some sort of notes on proving the angle of a lens? And the title is written at the top of the foreedge of the block in black ink. Engraved portrait of Wallis as frontispiece. There is some peeling to the leather especially at the bottom back, a split to the front hinge at the top to just above the middle; some peeling and scuffing to the spine. Paper has some foxing and age-related discoloration. A rare and fascinating bit of mathematical history. Please do not hesitate to email with questions or for more pictures. MAROT, Daniel.
c.1685. 430 x 330mm. A near-contemporary print of the Siege of Maastricht by the French army of King Louis XIV in 1673, part of the Franco-Dutch War (1672-8). After capturing the city the French held it under 1678. Above the scene is a map of the defences of the city within a cartouche of military trophies. Frenchman Daniel Marot (1661-1752) was an architect and furniture designer as well as an engraver. It is likely that he engraved this homage to Louis XIV before 1685, because in that year the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes caused him to join the Hugenot exodus from France. He entered the service of the Stadtholder, William of Orange, and accompanied him to England when he became King William III of England. Marot is now best known for his designing work for William and Mary at Hampton Court in the 1690s.

1685. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Alain Manesson Mallet was an important 17th-century French cartographer and engineer who published a number of works on architecture and warfare. His most famous work 'Les Travaux des Mars' was an interesting treatise in which Mallet appears to have written two distinct works and published them under one title. Published in three volumes, the first two (which are entirely independent of the third) are concerned with an analysis of the architecture and engineering of many European cities, focusing special attention to fortifications and geometrical elements of city walls, which is depicted by 266 fascinating full-page engravings. Cities include Douay, Arras, Lisbon, Brest, Barcelona, La Rochelle, Landrecy, and Geneva. Each tome illustrated with depictions of the fortifications. [Attributes: First Edition]

PENN, William
1685 1ed Quaker William Penn Defense of Duke of Buckingham Christian Tolerance “Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.” William Penn In 1685, George Villiers, the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, published a short political pamphlet on religious toleration. This tract, “A Short Discourse on the Reasonableness of Man’s Having a Religion,” was defended and promoted by William Penn, the father of Quakerism. According to Jones, “The Duke’s discourse gave rise to a considerable controversy, which was comprised in political rather than theological pamphlets.” An interesting view comes from Hume and Love in which they suspect that William Penn egged the Duke of Buckingham to write this pamphlet simply so that he could write his own response to it and defend it in his ‘Defense of Duke of Buckingham.’ While the author of this work is anonymous, many sources, including Wing, attribute it to William Penn. REVOCATION DE L'EDIT DE NANTES
1685In-4, plein maroquin noir janséniste, titre doré en long, daté en pied (rel. Devauchelle), 11, (1) bl. [sign. A-C2]. [Click Below for Full Description]
