Bach, J.S. (1685-1750)Die Kunst der Fuge Zurich: Hans Georg Nägeli. [ca. 1802]. Oblong folio. 182 (of 183) pages; lacks half-title and last leaf. Engraved throughout. Modern 1/4 calf; title heavily soiled and rubbed, trimmed and mounted, varying soiling and foxing, dampstaining in gutters in second half of volume, penultimate leaf rehinged and remargined. Published around half a century after the first edition, this is a notable publication in the history of the Bach revival at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Composed in the last decade of his life, The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080 is is an incomplete work of unspecified instrumentation and the culmination of Bach's experimentation with monothematic instrumental works. It consists of 14 fugues and 4 canons, each using some variation of a single principal subject, and generally ordered to increase in complexity. "The governing idea of the work", as put by Bach specialist Christoph Wolff, "was an exploration in depth of the contrapuntal possibilities inherent in a single musical subject." OLLYFFE, Thomas.
ESTC T135970 (2 copies); Heal, English writing-masters, pp. 81-82; WorldCat (5 copies). Wholly engraved English dictionary of calligraphic abbreviations of Latin words. It comprises 600 abbreviations in the court hand, with their significations written out in full in engrossing and secretary hands. The work was published by the writing master-master Thomas Ollyffe (fl. 1685- ca. 1725), who was an expert in these hands used at court. The gothic court hand is difficult to read, so that the book remains a valuable aid for anyone studying documents in that hand. Very good copy, upper margin slightly frayed and title-page a bit thumbed.

WOTTON, Sir Henry
1685. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "An ambassador is an honest man sent abroad to lie and intrigue for the benefit of his country." - Henry Wotton This fourth edition of "Reliquiae Wottonianae" is the final edition of this book to be printed, and yes, while it is not a first printing, this edition includes additional matter that was never included in other editions (see pages 585-713; Buxton Forman, 1223). Among the contents of this book is "A philosophical survey of education or moral architecture." Wotton, mostly known as a diplomat and a poet, was a staunch activist for education. This volume includes a life of Henry Wotton by Izaak Walton. Henry Wotton was not known for his writings, in fact, his portfolio is quite sparse compared to his contemporaries. He is regarded for only two major works - "Elements of Architecture" and this work, "Reliquiae Wottonianae." Of the twenty-five poems printed in this book, only fifteen are actually by Wotton. But two those pieces have solidified themselves as some of the best-known poems in English: · "On his Mistris, the Queen of Bohemia" · "The Character of a Happy Life". [Attributes: First Edition]

His most famous work ‘Les Travaux des Mars’ was an interesting treatise in which Mallet appears to have written two distinct works and published them under one title. Published in three volumes, the first two (which are entirely independent of the third) are concerned with an analysis of the architecture and engineering of many European cities, focusing special attention to fortifications and geometrical elements of city walls, which is depicted by 266 fascinating full-page engravings. Cities include Douay, Arras, Lisbon, Brest, Barcelona, La Rochelle, Landrecy, and Geneva. Each tome illustrated with depictions of the fortifications.
Very fresh copy in nice condition. In the seventeenth century the carol is an extremely popular genre, and by then it will constitute the major part of the Spanish musical production of the time. They compose a multitude of devotional Christmas carols for the different religious festivities such as the Assumption, the Immaculate Conception or festivities of saints, as well as Corpus Christi or Christmas. At this time the carol becomes even more sophisticated adding more voices to the polyphony, up to eight distributed in two choirs located in different parts of the church and accompaniment of the viol, harp and organ. The chorus becomes longer and complex polyphonically, often divided into tones and responsions, while in contrast the couplets are shortened and simplified musically. Some dramatic elements are also introduced. They are important musicians of this period among many others Cristóbal Galán, Juan Hidalgo and Sebastián Durón. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Letztere beschreibt v.
