Portal, Paul
Gabriel Martin, 1685. Size: 12mo-over 6; The Practice of Sustained Births of a Large Number of Observations. Contemporary mottled calf with five raised bands and gilt titles to spine, 7 1/2 x 5 inches, [20], 368 pages, 8 engraved plates, no author portrait at frontis and perhaps lacking a front free endpaper; occasional spots wearing through at extremities, three tiny worm holes at top of rear board, one at tail of spine and another slightly larger at head of front joint, some writing scribbled out at top edge of title page, brief inked notation in rear, pages show standard browning and waving as typical of books of this age, a couple of handwritten corrections to text: for example, the word "humeur" has been lined out and "tumeur" has been written next to it in the margin. Overall the book is remarkably clean and sound. Paul Portal was a renowned obstetrician in his day, and he made some ground-breaking observations. His most important contribution to the field of midwifery was likely his recognition of placenta previa and practices for its management. The book consists of more than 80 personal observations in obstetrics with detailed descriptions of problem cases. The plates show monstrous and deformed fetuses. A wonderfully well preserved early medical textbook! Very Good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

COMMELET (François).
S.l.n.d. (Paris, c.1685). in-12. 9pp. 1f. This is a used item. Please see item description for further details. [Croft, Herbert]. Lord Bishop of Hereford. Some Animadversions Upon a Book Intituled The Theory of the Earth. Harper, London 1685. Small octavo; [44], 178,[2]. Contemporary full speckled sheepskin, corners worn, a 19thc respine of light calf, two lettering pieces of red and black leather. Endpapers sl dusty, few blemishes. Few marginal spots but text generally clean. Bookplate of Frederick Polhill of Howbury Hall, Bedford. Overall a G-Nr VG copy of this interesting work which was a reply to Thomas Burnet's "Theory of the Earth" which was first published in Latin in 1681 then in English in 1684. The second part appeared in 1689 (Latin) and 1690 (English). In the work, Burnet suggested a hollow earth with most of the water inside until Noah's Flood, at which time mountains and oceans appeared. He calculated the amount of water on Earth's surface, stating there was not enough to account for the Flood. Burnet was to some extent influenced by Descartes who had written on the creation of the earth in Principia philosophiae (1644). Croft's criticism includes an accusation that Burnet was following the Second Epistle of Peter rather than the Book of Genesis. During the 1690s John Beaumont and Johann Caspar Eisenschmidt picked up on Burnet's ideas. They engendered a great deal of controversy at the time, and Burnet defended himself against selected critics, John Keill and Erasmus Warren. Isaac Newton was an admirer of Burnet's theological approach to geological processes. Newton even wrote to Burnet, suggesting th … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOYLE, Robert
1685 1ed Robert Boyle High Veneration Man’s Intellect anti Atheism Philosophy While mostly known for his contributions to natural philosophy and science, Robert Boyle was highly interested in theology, devoting much of his time to studying the existence of God, using his philosophical and even scientific discoveries as evidence. Works such as ‘Of the High Veneration of Man’s Intellect’ were written directly to defend the Christian faith against atheism, pagans, and even Jews and Mahometans, (as he stated in his own will). In this work, Boyle does note that it often seems as if God is indifferent to what happens on earth considering the destruction that is so prevalent; however, he states that close-minded philosophers such as Epicurus, should view these events as God’s power rather than his absence. [Wilcox, Thomas]
London: Printed for Nath. Crouch, 1685. 12mo, pp. [iv], 180, [6, ads] + woodcut frontispiece. Several woodcut illustrations within the text. Contemporary sheep, ruled in blind. Browned, some small marks and stains, some edges slightly worn. Leather darkened and a little worn, endpapers sometime renewed, hinges cracked. Bookplate of Sylvia W. Murray to front pastedown. The rare second, expanded edition of this theological tract issued by the popularising publisher Nathaniel Crouch, attributed to Thomas Wilcox (1622-1687), though the preface 'To the Reader', signed 'T.W.' in the 1676 first edition, is signed 'G.D.' in this one (despite the text being identical). The 84 pages of the 'Guide' in its first edition (which was followed by a dozen leaves of hymns not carried over to this edition) are condensed by smaller type to just 29 here, and the remaining 150 pages of other tracts are new to this printing. The later editions (of which there were at least 8 before 1760) mostly follow this version. ESTC locates just two copies of this edition, at the Folger and Yale, and none of the others at any more than a handful of locations (though there are also copies in the BL and Oxford). ESTC R26363.

The Practice of Sustained Births of a Large Number of Observations, by Paul Portal: Master Surgeon. Paris: Gabriel Martin, 1685. Contemporary mottled calf with five raised bands and gilt titles to spine, 7 1/2 x 5 inches, [20],368 pages, 8 engraved plates, no author portrait at frontis and perhaps lacking a front free endpaper; occasional spots wearing through at extremities, three tiny worm holes at top of rear board, one at tail of spine and another slightly larger at head of front joint, some writing scribbled out at top edge of title page, brief inked notation in rear, pages show standard browning and waving as typical of books of this age, a couple of handwritten corrections to text: for example, the word "humeur" has been lined out and "tumeur" has been written next to it in the margin. Overall the book is remarkably clean and sound. Paul Portal was a renowned obstetrician in his day, and he made some ground-breaking observations. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
