Henry Elsinge; John Doddridge; R C; Henry Scobell
London: M Gillflower, 1685. Bound in full leather. Contains four volumes bound as one. Very scarce. Collates complete. Henry Scobell (c1610 - 1661) was an English Parliamentary official, and editor of official publications. He was clerk to the Long Parliament, and wrote on parliamentary procedure and precedents. Sir John Doddridge (1555 - 1628) was a judge. As a lawyer Dodderidge was immensely well respected. He was known as the Sleeping Judge, not because of any shortcoming on his part, but because of his habit of concentrating on legal argument with eyes firmly closed. Dodderidge got to the heart of matters very quickly, and his arguments--as advocate, as judge, and as parliamentarian--had a compelling lucidity. His writings show the same quality. CONDITION In a full calf binding. There is significant wear to the extremities including heavy rubbing with some loss to the leather and cracking to the spine. The front board is detached but present. The binding is generally tight and firm although it is coming loose at the bottom of the volume. There is an ink stamp mark to the front pastedown and a signature and annotation to the first title page. A few of the pages have underlinings. The final 33 pages have been close trimmed at the foredge with loss to the odd letter at the end of a line of text. There is a small tear with loss to the first title page and to the corners of a couple of pages, but with no loss to the text. Overall the volume is in fair condition externally but good internally. Extremely scarce and important work. Overall Condition: Fair.

DESCARTES, Rene
"It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well." - René Descartes René Descartes was a 17th-century French philosopher whose theories and discoveries spawned an influx of commentary and responsive writings from western philosophers. He wrote numerous studies on a variety of topics including meteorology, physics, dioptrics, mechanics, and even music - all of which were collected in his work 'Discourse on the Method'. This 1685 Elzevier edition features the philosophical works of Descartes including 'Discourse on Method' This work, originally published 1637, was the first major work published during his lifetime and has long since been considered one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy. (Davis, Descartes Dream). In this work, Descartes discusses skepticism, logic, and physics and philosophical texts. In addition to 'Discourse', this collection includes 'Principles of Philosophy' - a work which establishes laws of nature, laws of physics, metaphysical meditations, and concepts of wisdom. In fact, Isaac Newton referenced Descartes' principles in his own 'Principia'. [Attributes: First Edition]

LA FONTAINE Jean de
à Amsterdam [Paris]: S.n. The so-called Fermiers Generaux edition, using the editions of 1685 and 1696 for the text and adding tales by d'Autreau and de Vergier, present in the 1718 edition. This edition was of 2,000 copies on verge de Hollande paper, the present copy one of the rare copies in contemporary morocco. This copy is probably of the first issue, bearing in mind the quality of the engravings and a fleuron error on p. 240 of vol. 1, later corrected. The work has 80 proof illustrations by Eisen, engraved by the foremost engravers of the time (Aliamet, Baquoy, Choffard, Delafosse, Flipart, Le Mire, Leveau, de Longueuil and Ouvrier), two frontispiece portraits (one of La Fontaine by Hyacinthe Rigaud and another of Eisen by Vispre, engraved by Ficquet), as well as six vignettes by Coffard, of which two to title, two hors-texte at the head of each volume and two at the head of the first tale in each volume; and 53 tailpieces. This edition was printed at the expense of the Fermiers Generaux and is therefore known as the "Fermiers Generaux edition." It stands out thanks to the high quality of its printing and the remarkable illustrations by Eisen (1720-1778), who made this work not only his own masterpiece, but unquestionably one of the masterpieces of 18th century illustrated book production. Contemporary red morocco, the spines with gilt fillets and fleurons (stars), the covers with a triple frame of gilt fillets, gilt tooling to edge of covers, narrow interior gilt dentelle framing the marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. A few insignificant spots to the plates in the seco … [Click Below for Full Description]

1685. This is a complete set of the commentaries on the minor prophets written by the renowned Oxford orientalist Edward Pococke; Hosea takes up one volume, while Joel, Micah, and Malachi are bound together in the second volume. Hosea (1685) and Joel (1691) are first impressions; Micah and Malachi are second impressions from 1692 (first published 1677). This is a rare and, for a number of reasons, important set. Edward Pococke (1604-1691) travelled to Aleppo at the age of 26 to take up a post as chaplain to the English merchants resident there. Over the course of five years in Syria, he became fluent in Arabic, studied other oriental languages, and took the opportunity to amass a great collection of manuscripts. When William Laud established Oxford's first professorship of Arabic, he invited Pococke to fill the post. Pococke wrote a major history of the Arabs (drawn from Bar Hebraeus), translated Maimonides into Latin, and later translated Grotius' De Veritate into Arabic (he was also made Regius Professor of Hebrew). These commentaries on Micah, Malachi, Hosea, and Joel constitute the major work of the later decades of Pococke's life. Pococke's experiences in the East stood him in good stead as a biblical commentator; one well known example is his correction of Micah 1:8 from 'wailing like the dragons' to 'howling like the jackals'. But the most important asset Pococke brought to the table was his ability to mine the vast Jewish scholarship on the Old Testament in Hebrew and Arabic, due to his immense facility with languages and his adroitness in acquiring rare manuscripts … [Click Below for Full Description]

"In 1789, at the request of Baron Gottfried van Swieten, Mozart, by all accounts a profound admirer of Handel, also re-orchestrated Messiah. It is often said that the subject of the re-orchestration was to compensate for the absence of an organ in the hall, but this is not borne out by what Mozart does, which seems more of a translation into terms suggested by the ordinary forces for these concerts; these included flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns and trombones. The trumpets were demoted from melodic to harmonic instruments. 'The trumpet shall sound' and 'If God be for us,' which van Swieten called the 'cold aria,' were rewritten, the latter as a recitative" (Luckett, Handel's Messiah: A Celebration, 214).
