DESCARTES, Rene
Amstelodami: Blaviana, 1685. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well." - René Descartes René Descartes was a 17th-century French philosopher whose theories and discoveries spawned an influx of commentary and responsive writings from western philosophers. He wrote numerous studies on a variety of topics including meteorology, physics, dioptric, mechanics, and even music - all of which were collected in his work 'Discourse on the Method'. According to the 'Printing and the Mind of Man', "It is no exaggeration to say that Descartes was the first of modern philosophers and one of the first modern scientists; in both branches of learning his influence has been vast The revolution he caused can be most easily found in his reassertion of the principle (lost in the Middle Ages) that knowledge, if it is to have any value, must be intelligence and not erudition. His application of modern arithmetic to ancient geometry created the analytical geometry which is the basis of the post-Euclidean development of that science." One of his most important and oft-referenced works was 'Meditations of First Philosophy' - a collection of detailed explanations of various philosophical systems. Discussed are metaphysical ideals concerning the human mind, the existence of God, material things, the distinction between the mind and body, and the value of truths. This work is still considered to be one of the most influential philosophical texts ever written. (Watson.).

Danckerts, Justus.
Amsterdam, Danckerts, [ca. 1685]. Folio (325 x 530 mm). With 31 double-page engraved maps, including one world map, partly in original hand colour, and 36 engraved city views. 18th century half calf over marbled boards. A collection of maps from the famous Danckerts atlas, created around 1685 and compiled in this version in the late 18th century. The volume contains 28 maps by the Dutch engraver and publisher Justus Danckerts (1635-1701), including a world map showing the Eastern and Western hemispheres, maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and America, as well as maps of Spain, France, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Bohemia, Hungary, the Balkan Peninsula, Greece, and Poland. The views show various cities in Hungary and Greece, also including Constantinople. There are three maps not originating from Danckerts: a postal map of Germany published in Augsburg by Matthias Seutter; another showing the Holy Land, by Guillaume Sanson; and the third showing the Habsburg empire in 1781, which suggests the terminus post quem for the compilation of this volume. - Lacks a title-page. With 19th century bookplate of a member of the Lasser von Zollheim family, probably Johann Baptist (1822-89), librarian and later the abbot of the Benedictine abbey of Lambach in Upper Austria. A handwritten table of contents on the reverse of the first map; each map numbered by hand. On the back of the maps of France and Poland is a list of field marshals who served under Napoleon. Handwritten bibliographical notes to flyleaf. - Binding rubbed, spine-ends bumped. Paper variously brownstai … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Restoration was a particularly precarious time for Puritans, as the nation shifted out from Cromwell's oversight and into the governance of Charles II, angry at his father's trial and execution. During a time of religious and political retribution, Manton's work provided a voice for tolerance and peace among those Englishmen identifiying as Christians. Yet he also urged his flock to remain true to their beliefs. FOUQUET, Marie
1685. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "One of the most famous collections of popular remedies!" The 'Remedies' of Madame Fouquet was a popular book of medicines, healing, and healthy recipes, originally written in the late 17th-century (1685). Her situation was a unique experience for women in any scientific field during her day. Except - it wasn't. According to Doig and Sturzer, "Although she helped many people, she continues to this day to be given credit for something she actually never did. Marie Fouquet...was a very religious woman who expended much energy and money in organizing care for and distributing medicine to the poor. Although she is often credited with the authorship of 'Recueil de receptes choisies, experimentees...as well as the receipies, she neither wrote the book nor developed the formulas! - (D&S, 131) "The most prominent of the charitable handbooks, and perhaps the most successful of its kind in early modern Europe" (Porter 103). This book describes medical work, experiments, and treatments that she herself developed - including syphilis!

SHAKESPEARE, William.
From the 1685 Fourth Folio.SHAKESPEARE, William. Measure for Measure, extracted from the Fourth Folio. [London: Printed for H. Herringman, E. Brewster, and R. Bentley], [1685].Folio in sixes; full panelled calf by Bernard Middleton (with his pencil signature) and blind stamp, lettered in gilt on upper board; pp. 55 - 76; a little browning, and occasional staining, paper repair to margin of final leaf. The complete play of Measure for Measure extracted from a copy of the Fourth Folio edition of the complete works published in 1685. The Fourth Folio was the last of the great 17th century folio editions of Shakespeare's complete plays. It was a reprint of the Third Folio (1663) with corrections and modernizations. The text of this edition is printed in a larger type than the three earlier editions, and more liberally spaced. It was executed on Dutch paper.Measure for Measure first appeared in the First Folio of 1623. Because the play does not end tragically, it is technically a comedy, but modern critics describe it as one of Shakespeare's "problem plays", due to its dark content. In it, Shakespeare explores themes of corruption and incorruptability; sin and virtue; the responsibility of civil law; morality and the dichotomy of justice and mercy. This copy was bound by Bernard Middleton, MBE (1932 - 2019). Middleton trained at the Central School of Art and Design in London and spent many years at the bindery of the British Museum and British Library. He went on to manage Zaehnsdorf, one of the most prestigious binderies in London, and then established his own business. He re … [Click Below for Full Description]

1685. This is a used item. Please see item description for further details. [Croft, Herbert]. Lord Bishop of Hereford. Some Animadversions Upon a Book Intituled The Theory of the Earth. Harper, London 1685. Small octavo; [44], 178,[2]. Contemporary full speckled sheepskin, corners worn, a 19thc respine of light calf, two lettering pieces of red and black leather. Endpapers sl dusty, few blemishes. Few marginal spots but text generally clean. Bookplate of Frederick Polhill of Howbury Hall, Bedford. Overall a G-Nr VG copy of this interesting work which was a reply to Thomas Burnet's "Theory of the Earth" which was first published in Latin in 1681 then in English in 1684. The second part appeared in 1689 (Latin) and 1690 (English). In the work, Burnet suggested a hollow earth with most of the water inside until Noah's Flood, at which time mountains and oceans appeared. He calculated the amount of water on Earth's surface, stating there was not enough to account for the Flood. Burnet was to some extent influenced by Descartes who had written on the creation of the earth in Principia philosophiae (1644). Croft's criticism includes an accusation that Burnet was following the Second Epistle of Peter rather than the Book of Genesis. During the 1690s John Beaumont and Johann Caspar Eisenschmidt picked up on Burnet's ideas. They engendered a great deal of controversy at the time, and Burnet defended himself against selected critics, John Keill and Erasmus Warren. Isaac Newton was an admirer of Burnet's theological approach to geological processes. Newton even wrote to Burnet, suggest … [Click Below for Full Description]

"On 21 Sept. 1683 he was installed in the deanery of Westminster, and he was consecrated at Lambeth as bishop of Rochester on 2 Nov. 1684, holding both preferments until his death. .. He marked his gratitude for his new preferments by bringing out at the close of May 1685 A True Account and Declaration of the Horrid Conspiracy against the late King, his present Majesty and the Government, which, though anonymous, was known to be the composition of Sprat.
