GRELOT GUILLAUME-JOSEPH.
GRELOT GUILLAUME-JOSEPH.

John Wallis
Peeling leather and scuffs some foxing bookplates and writing Fold-outs intact. John Wallis was a mathematician who developed a variety of theories that led to the development of modern calculus. He is responsible for the infinity sign and spent most of his life studying mathematical theory. This particular book, "Treatise on Algebra", is Wallis' only book to be published in English and is the first recorded effort to give a graphical interpretation of the complex roots of a real quadratic equation. contains several fold outs depicting various angles and mathematical relationships as well as pages of equations. This volume has "A Treatise of Algebra" and "A Treatise of Angular Sections"."A Defense of the Angle of Contact" " A Defense of the Treatise of the Angle of Contact" and others. There is a tear at the top of the first fold out just past where the engraving is attached to the paper. And I have found some marginalia in the last section of the book in the section on trigonometry. seems to be some homework or some sort of notes on proving the angle of a lens? And the title is written at the top of the foreedge of the block in black ink. Engraved portrait of Wallis as frontispiece. There is some peeling to the leather especially at the bottom back, a split to the front hinge at the top to just above the middle; some peeling and scuffing to the spine. Paper has some foxing and age-related discoloration. A rare and fascinating bit of mathematical history. Please do not hesitate to email with questions or for more pictures. Henry Elsinge; John Doddridge; R C; Henry Scobell
London: M Gillflower, 1685. Bound in full leather. Contains four volumes bound as one. Very scarce. Collates complete. Henry Scobell (c1610 - 1661) was an English Parliamentary official, and editor of official publications. He was clerk to the Long Parliament, and wrote on parliamentary procedure and precedents. Sir John Doddridge (1555 - 1628) was a judge. As a lawyer Dodderidge was immensely well respected. He was known as the Sleeping Judge, not because of any shortcoming on his part, but because of his habit of concentrating on legal argument with eyes firmly closed. Dodderidge got to the heart of matters very quickly, and his arguments--as advocate, as judge, and as parliamentarian--had a compelling lucidity. His writings show the same quality. CONDITION In a full calf binding. There is significant wear to the extremities including heavy rubbing with some loss to the leather and cracking to the spine. The front board is detached but present. The binding is generally tight and firm although it is coming loose at the bottom of the volume. There is an ink stamp mark to the front pastedown and a signature and annotation to the first title page. A few of the pages have underlinings. The final 33 pages have been close trimmed at the foredge with loss to the odd letter at the end of a line of text. There is a small tear with loss to the first title page and to the corners of a couple of pages, but with no loss to the text. Overall the volume is in fair condition externally but good internally. Extremely scarce and important work. Overall Condition: Fair.

Présentée au Roy. Paris, Pierre Rocolet, 1685. In-12 (160x100mm), relié plein veau époque, dos à 5 nerfs orné, pièce de titre. 6ff.n.ch. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PORTAL, Paul.
FIRST EDITION. G&M 6148. Portal was the first to appreciate the situation in placenta praevia, and had a clear insight into the actual findings and management of that entity, which is probably his most important contribution to the science of midwifery. He also demonstrated that version could be done with one foot, and taught that face presentation usually ran a normal course. Portal was a pupil of Mauriceau, and worked with him in the Hôtel Dieu. This important and eminently practical treatise was based on his personal experiences and observations. The plates depict abnormal and monstrous foetuses. See Cutter & Viets pp. 81-83.

[Click Below for Full Description]
