Quran
La Haye: Adrian Moetjens, 1685. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare, 17th-century printing of the Quran in French. This highly desirable Islamic text was translated by Andre du Ryer, known for his accuracy in French translations. Du Ryer translated this work out of the Arabic into French; however, it was not well-received by the Catholic Church. In fact, Catholic priest Vincent de Paul prohibited the distribution of this work - the first French Quran to be banned when it was originally published!

He copied with oil painting the masterpieces of the Carracci's, of Guercino and many other Bolognese painters. He also realized with the etching technique various subjects: daily life scenes, profane and sacred allegories, satires, proverbs, party games. His engravings were often accompanied with short comments or poems written in Bolognese dialect.

WALLIS, John
London: Printed by J. Playford, for R. Davis, 1685. First edition, and a large and handsome copy, of "Wallis' last great mathematical book" (DSB). It combined a full account of the contemporary knowledge of algebra and its history, "a feat never previously attempted by any author" (DSB); it also contained many topics we would not now expect to find in a book on algebra, notably the first publication of any of Newton's work on infinite series, and the first attempt to give a graphical representation of complex numbers. "Of the 100 chapters, the first fourteen trace the history of the subject up to the time of Viète, with emphasis on the development of mathematical notation. The subsequent practical introduction to algebra (chapters 15-63) was based almost entirely on Oughtred's 'Clavis mathematicae,' Harriot's 'Artis analyticae praxis,' and 'An Introduction to Algebra' (1668), Thomas Brancker's translation of J. H. Rahn's 'Teutsche Algebra' (1659), with numerous additions by John Pell, Rahn's former teacher . . . After an insertion concerning the application of algebra to geometry and geometrical interpretations of algebraic facts (chapters 64-72, including an attempt to give a representation of imaginary numbers), Wallis devoted the final twenty-eight chapters to a subject that one would hardly look for in a book on algebra today: a discussion of the methods of exhaustion and of indivisibles, with reference to the 'Arithmetica infinitorum' (1656) . . . The 'Algebra' also includes an exposition of the method of infinite series and the first printed account . . . of some of N … [Click Below for Full Description]

Harper, London 1685. Small octavo; [44], 178,[2]. Contemporary full speckled sheepskin, corners worn, a 19thc respine of light calf, two lettering pieces of red and black leather. Endpapers sl dusty, few blemishes. Few marginal spots but text generally clean. Bookplate of Frederick Polhill of Howbury Hall, Bedford. Overall a G-Nr VG copy of this interesting work which was a reply to Thomas Burnet's "Theory of the Earth" which was first published in Latin in 1681 then in English in 1684. The second part appeared in 1689 (Latin) and 1690 (English). In the work, Burnet suggested a hollow earth with most of the water inside until Noah's Flood, at which time mountains and oceans appeared. He calculated the amount of water on Earth's surface, stating there was not enough to account for the Flood. Burnet was to some extent influenced by Descartes who had written on the creation of the earth in Principia philosophiae (1644). Croft's criticism includes an accusation that Burnet was following the Second Epistle of Peter rather than the Book of Genesis. During the 1690s John Beaumont and Johann Caspar Eisenschmidt picked up on Burnet's ideas. They engendered a great deal of controversy at the time, and Burnet defended himself against selected critics, John Keill and Erasmus Warren. Isaac Newton was an admirer of Burnet's theological approach to geological processes. Newton even wrote to Burnet, suggest … [Click Below for Full Description]
