Lopez, Juan Luis
Relieving the Indians from financial burdens imposed by the Clergy in America, printed in Lima. 1685. Lima. In folio. 1 ff. + 146 pp. Later vellum. Generally a very good copy, last ff. with a long repair tear, affecting text, backed on the verso.First Edition. Ostensibly a defence of the clergy, facing an investigation of its compliance with a reform law designed to relieve the Indians of unjust financial burdens placed on them by the clergy. The clergy´s right to unlicensed press is also defended.Maggs "Medina, La Imprenta en Lima, No. 581, only knew of one copy. Official publication written and issued by order of the Viceroy of Peru, Melchor de Navarre y Racafull, the Duque de la Palata who had quarreled with the Archbishop Melchor de Linan y Cisneros. This work is a refutation of the objections made by the Archbishop of Lima with reference to a decree published on the 20th February, 1684, and addressed to the Corregidores in order to put an end to abuses of ecclesiastical jurisdiction. The quarrel even extended to the Duchess de la Palata who was refused admission to the nuns convents in Lima in January, 1684."Sabin, 41987. Maggs, VI, 179 (1927).

De Soto]. [Citri de la Guette, Samuel de Broe].
1685 - First French edition, and amongst the earliest available, of Soto’s exploration of Southern United States. 1685. Paris. Denys Thierry. In 8vo. 12 ff. + 300. Contemporary French speckled calf, raised bands to spine, tooled in gilt, red morocco title label lettered; joints renewed, else fine. Title page with minor mainly marginal toning, scattered leaves present minor toning but overall very good. First French edition of the Relacam Verdadeira –first published in 1557, which is known in a single copy. A rare book consisting of the anonymous eyewitness’ account of De Soto’s expedition to Florida ad the Southern United States. Furthermore, the work includes the dramatic tale of Juan Ortiz, a member of the Narvaez expedition captured by the Indians and rescued by De Soto. The anonymous Portuguese original is a known in a single copy and is found at the NYPL. This is the first translation into French, made by the 17th century French historian Citri de la Guette, to compete with the later Florida del Ynca of Garcilasso de la Vega (published in Lisbon in 1605), considering this less well-known and historically more accurate –and considering the contemporaneity a consistent argument- relation was due for notoriety. It is the basis and inspiration for the English translation of the following year “A relation of the invasion and conquest of Florida by the Spaniards” (1686). The NUC mistakenly records an edition of 1589 (actually the 1699 reprint by Couterot). “The English translation, the first account in the English language of the settl … [Click Below for Full Description]
