Relieving the Indians from financial burdens imposed by the Clergy in America, printed in Lima. 1685. Lima. In folio. 1 ff. + 146 pp. Later vellum. Generally a very good copy, last ff. with a long repair tear, affecting text, backed on the verso.First Edition. Ostensibly a defence of the clergy, facing an investigation of its compliance with a reform law designed to relieve the Indians of unjust financial burdens placed on them by the clergy. The clergy´s right to unlicensed press is also defended.Maggs "Medina, La Imprenta en Lima, No. 581, only knew of one copy. Official publication written and issued by order of the Viceroy of Peru, Melchor de Navarre y Racafull, the Duque de la Palata who had quarreled with the Archbishop Melchor de Linan y Cisneros. This work is a refutation of the objections made by the Archbishop of Lima with reference to a decree published on the 20th February, 1684, and addressed to the Corregidores in order to put an end to abuses of ecclesiastical jurisdiction. The quarrel even extended to the Duchess de la Palata who was refused admission to the nuns convents in Lima in January, 1684."Sabin, 41987. Maggs, VI, 179 (1927).
