Comenius alt: Komensky, (John Amos)
Samuel Brewer, 1685, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good Condition. Comenius or Komensky (1592-1670) was the last Bishop of the old church of the Moravian and Bohemian Brethren and a famous writer on education. He was a reformer and prescient in his attitude to teaching languages to children in that he believed that other languages than the child's mother tongue should be learnt in the same way, that is, by connecting the thing to the word. Hence, the book is full of woodcut images that are set next to the vocabulary in Latin, German and Hungarian. This edition is bound in a piece of vellum that appears to have been taken from an earlier manuscript book of plainchant music making for an attractive and unusual book. The woodcut on the verso of A5 has failed to print. The vellum has a few small insect holes at the base of the rear panel that don't extend any further into the book. Also, some small chips to the vellum on the back. The interior is bright and clean and none of the pages have lost any text to binder's trimming. Size: Small Octavo. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request.

"La Fontaine, Jean de; Hooghe, Romeyn de (1645-1708)"
Desbordes, Henri 1685. "Coll.: 12º: pi1 *8 A-I12 K10, *4 A-I12, gepag.: [2] [16] 236 pp., [8] 216 pp. In het eerste deel een titelpagina door Romeyn de Hooghe (1685) en in elk deel 29 etsen in de tekst, eveneens door De Hooghe. Ex.: Leer, scharnier voorplat ged. los Bibl. verw.: Landwehr 62; Lit.: Van Eeghen, De Amsterdamse boekhandel 1680-1725 (Amsterdam 1965) III, p.89; Moderne encyclopedie der wereldliteratuur (Hilversum 1967) IV, p.571. RdH008".

Quite popular with students and lawyers due to its clarity and concision, it went through at least twenty-five editions by 1721. A final reissue appeared in 1819. Verfasser/in: Palaephatus Martin Brunner Paul Pater Cornelius Tollius Verlag: Francofurti Meyerus 1685 8, VIII, 241 S., orig.
Paris: Chez Henry Desbordes, 1685. Fine. Chez Henry Desbordes, Paris 1685, 2 tomes en un volume in-12 (10x16,5cm), (8f.) 236pp. (4f.) 216pp., deux tomes reliés en un volume. - First collective and first illustrated edition of the Tales, decorated with a frontispiece and 58 half-page engravings Romain de Hooghe, engraved etching. Our copy looks good all the features of the first draw (out of three published in 1685): "The Judge Mêle" (instead of "Mesle") to the table of the first volume; "Essays on the Mona Lisa" shown p. 211; fault "Ches" on the frontispiece; 11 lines of text on page 211 and 17 lines on the first page of the preface to the second volume. Binding XVIII signed J. Wright in full red morocco. Back with five nerves evenly once adorned boxes and gilded florets. Multiple threads and golden florets spandrels framing dishes. Inner lace. All edges gilt. A restored worm gallery affecting some layers, an ink stain on the sidelines of three leaflets and angular restored tear on page 219 of the first volume, otherwise very nice copy of freshness. While Cohen states that many amateurs join this edition illustrated with beautiful XVIII th, it should be noted however that the lively art of Romain de Hooghe, which magnifies the sticker is quite representative of this century and joined nothing the aesthetic canons of the next century, is precisely what makes its value, closer to how one could imagine the tales of La Fontaine in a contemporary way illustration. - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Première édition collective et première illustrée des Contes, ornée d'un frontispice et d … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dufour, Philippe Sylvestre, (pseud.) [Spon, Jacob; Colmonero de Ledesma, Antonio; Marradon, Bartolomeo]
Parisiis: Apud Petrum Muguet, 1685. Duodecimo, 169. [4] pages. Index. A fair copy manuscript of the first two sections of Dufour's Tractatus. The third section,on chocolate, is a translation of a separate work, Antonio Colmenero de Ledesma's Curioso Tratado de la Naturaleza y Calidad del Chocolate, etc., and is omitted here. The third part is also not included in the title, which in every other way is a facsimile of the Latin edition of 1685. The Latin edition was simultaneously issued by Muguet of Paris with the French edition from which it was translated. This manuscript includes holograph facsimiles of the frontispiece engraving and the two engraved plates, depicting stylized Arab and Chinese men of the time, as well as images of the plants and apparatus. "Dufour upon coffee, tea and chocolate is a classic. It is the standard reference for the early history and methods of preparation." (Bitting). At the foot of the title page is a gift inscription reading, "Donatus e P. Andre Sieklucki ab eodem Magnifico dnd [abbreviation for "gave us gifts"] du in Novembri 1700 abiret Canna" [Given to Andrei Sieklucki for the magnificent gifts he has given, second day of November 1700, go sing." Just above that is what appears to be a later ownership signature, "Ex libris Michaelis Koserger [?] Notarii Terrestris Palatinatus Vilnensis". Tidemark to lower right hand corner of first one-third of pages, tiny bit of insect damage to first few pages, not affecting text, otherwise generally clean and neat internally. Engraved frontispiece and 3 other similar plates. a little rubbed, some stripping of the lower board, front joint starting, but sound, small browning ink spot at the outer margin of the frontispiece, last leaf of the text with paper fault to the fore-edge, slightly softened in the margin and with a few small pieces lacking, but no loss of text, light browning else, a very good copy. First edition in Latin, first published in French as Traitez nouveaux & curieux du café, du thé, et du chocolate (Lyon, 1671). "The work of Dufour upon coffee, tea, and chocolate is a classic. It is the standard work of reference for the early history and metohds of preparation" (Bitting). Dufour describes himself as a "merchant, negotiating with others doing business in the Levant", who thus had "become familiar with the subject". The 'Tractatvs de chocolata' is in fact by Antonio Colmenero de Ledesma and was first published in Spanish with title 'Curioso tratado de la naturaleza y calidad del chocolate' (Madrid, 1631); the 'Dialogvs de chocolata' is by Bartolomeo Marradon. The highly appealing frontispiece shows a gathering of a Turk, a Chinese, and an American native, each enjoying their own respective beverage. The other plates stand at the beginning of the relevant sections of the text, and show the individual nations with remarques of the plants, and preparatory equipment required for each. SHAKESPEARE, William
London: for H. Herringman, and are to be sold by Joseph Knight and Francis Saunders,, 1685. Published according to the true Original Copies. Unto which is added, Seven Plays, Never before Printed in Folio … Folio (360 × 234 mm). Rebound to style using old leather and retaining old endpapers, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label, blind-ruled sides, plain endpapers, old sprinkled edges. Engraved portrait by Martin Droeshout above the verses To the Reader on verso of first leaf, double column text within typographical rules, woodcut initials. Fourth folio, and the last of the 17th-century editions of Shakespeare's works, edited by John Heminge (d. 1630) and Henry Condell (d. 1627), the seven plays added by Philip Chetwin (d. 1680), publisher of the Third Folio. A reprint of the ill-fated Third Folio, this edition was issued by Henry Herringman in conjunction with other booksellers, and has three settings of the title-page. Of the seven additional plays, also included in the Third Folio, only Pericles is today recognised as the work of Shakespeare. In common with the Third, the Fourth Folio dropped the final "e" from Shakespeare's name, a spelling that persisted until the beginning of the 19th century. The printer of the Comedies has been identified from the ornaments as Robert Roberts. Although this is the only edition in which each play does not start on a fresh page, it is in a larger fount and more liberally spaced than the three earlier editions. Leiden [Paris], Cornelius Boutesteyn, 1685. Square 4to (19.6 x 15.0 cm) First edition. 78 pp., 18 fine engravings in the text. Twentieth century vellum with printed paper label on the spine. The title of this work roughly translates into "Anatomy and contemplation of the nature of invisible secrets included in letters written to the illustrious company of the famous King's College, London". It contains Van Leeuwenhoek's letters 43, 42 and 38 (Dobell' s numbers), in that order. These are titled, respectively, "D. D. omni observantiae cultu mihi prosequendi ac devenerandi"; "De structura cerebri diversorum animalium: de generatione pituitae, mucinarium seu blennae, humoris crystallini in oculis hominum, moxae, calcis arthriticorum, morbi leprosorum, squammarum in anguillis", and "De generatio ranarum...", the latter thus being of herpetological interest, the others mainly dealing with human anatomy. The last letter was presented to the Royal Society by the famous British architect, Christopher Wren. The letters are unnumbered, and the pagination is continuous. This is an extremely rare first Latin translation from Dutch, of the letters contained in the original text of Dobell 5, published in the same year. Van Leeuwenhoek had those translations prepared, to be able to communicate with the scientific community outside of The Netherlands. Indeed, he became famous as the first and foremost microscopist of his time. Norman, 1316. Not in Heirs of Hippocrates, nor Osler. Dobell mentions: "my own copy is the only one I have seen." [Drillingseinband]. Biblia germanica.
Lüneburg, Johann Stern, 1685.. (8), 664 SS. 423, (1) SS. 302, (5), 5, 8 SS. Mit gest. Frontispiz und zus. 3 Kupfertiteln. Dunkelbrauner Lederband der Zeit. Marmorvorsätze. Dreiseitiger Goldschnitt. 12mo (70 x 130 x 65 mm).. (8), 664 pp. 423, (1) pp. 302, (5), 5, 8 pp. With engr. frontispiece and 3 engr. title pages. Contemp. brown calf. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Pretty Lüneburg-printed Luther Bible in small pocket format, bound as a "dos-à-dos-à-dos binding", a superlative triplet version of the dos-à-dos binding. The latter is described as "a binding structure in which two separate books are bound together such that the fore edge of one is adjacent to the spine of the other, with a shared lower board between them serving as the back cover of both". Von Arnim states that "this gimmick first seems to have appeared in the 1560s [.] Gruel noted that these curious bindings almost exclusively contain Protestant functional writings. It would seem that sober Protestantism here yielded to a luxurious whim, as it were, a substitute for the Catholics' bibliophile Books of Hours. Dos-à-dos bindings were particularly popular in England, especially for the small-format editions of the New Testament and Psalms so common there [.] Of nine dos-à-dos bindings in the British Museum, six are embroidered" (Bibl. Otto Schäfer, no. 79). "These twin bindings, or dos-à-dos bindings, were used frequently for religious books of the 17th and 18th century, but very few have survived" (Sonntag, Boerner Cat. 21, no. 63: an embroidered English dos-à-dos binding). Bound between the first and second parts (Genesis through Song of Solomon; Prophets) is the third part (New Testament), with shared inner boards. A few old ms. notes; first part wants flyleaves. [TRINITY HOUSE]
for the government and encrease of the navigation of England, and the relief of poor mariners, their widdows and orphans, &c.Trinity House was originally a guild of "ship men and mariners" of England set up by Henry VIII in 1517, "to the praise and honour of the most glorious and individable Trinity ...... in the parish church of Deptford-Strond in our county of Kent". Its original purpose was to do all things necessary for the "relief, increase and augmentation of the shipping of this our realm of England". Elizabeth I extended the duties of the guild to the erection of sea-marks since "by the destroying and taking away of certain steeples, woods and other marks standing upon the main shores ...... being as beacons and marks of ancient time, divers ships have been miscarried, perished, and lost in the sea ......". Since then the Corporation of Trinity House has been the body responsible in England for the erection and maintenance of lighthouses, lightships, buoys, and other aids to navigation within the waters surrounding English shores.Samuel Pepys, Secretary for Admiralty Affairs from 1683 to 1689 under both Charles II and James II, had been largely responsible for the reformation at this time both of the Navy Board itself but also of the Trinity House. Its name derives from the church of Holy Trinity and St. Clement, which adjoined the royal dockyard at Deptford. Trinity House's operational headquarters is now in Harwich (just four miles from Wrabness).8vo., engraved frontispiece plate of the Trinity House coat of arms, (2) + 220pp., title-page and A2 printed in red and … [Click Below for Full Description]

ARCHIMEDES.
- ex traditione Francici Maurolici. Woodcut printer’s device on title, numerous woodcut illus. in the text, & a woodcut vignette on verso of final leaf. 4 p.l., 296 pp. Folio, cont. English panelled calf (joints very carefully repaired, first leaf & final leaf with some light browning around edges), spine richly gilt. Palermo: C. Hesperi, 1685. First edition of Maurolico’s important edition of Archimedes’ works, based upon an earlier partial edition by Borelli (Messina: 1670-72), which was almost completely lost. Maurolico’s edition was largely prepared in 1534 and 1547-50 and remained in manuscript for many years after his death. Maurolico’s "method of redaction is suggested in the preface. After enumerating and summarising Archimedes’ works, Maurolico states that he has tried to make the works more easily intelligible by adding many lemmas, by demonstrating many things omitted by Archimedes, and by treating of the centres of gravity of solids Maurolico does not hesitate to re-arrange Archimedes’ master work, the De Sphaera et Cylindro, often substituting what he claims to be a better proof or enunciation for that of the original It is, however, in the De Aequeponderantibus that Maurolico makes his most drastic re-arrangement of the Archimedean material and also his most important contributions to mathematics "Maurolico organises the treatise (which he calls De Momentis Aequalibus) and his own additions into four books. The first deals with general principles relating to centres of gravity and equilibrium. The following three books concer … [Click Below for Full Description]
