LEEUWENHOEK, Antoni van.
Dobell 8 & pp. 192-196; Verkruijsse, Romeyn de Hooghe 1685.07 First edition in the original Dutch, of seven of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's early letters announcing and illustrating his recent discoveries of the microscopic wonders of nature, six never before published in any language and nearly all offering (sometimes literally!) seminal revelations. They discuss the "little animals" he found in the semen of various animals, including birds and fish; the microstructure of various kinds of wood; the anatomy of a rat testicle and sperm cells, a micro-anatomical study of mussels and oysters, and microbes in the sap of vines; a follow-up to microbes in sap; and in the second part the structure of hair and the discovery of microbes in the faeces of a sick and a healthy human (both the author himself!); muscle fibres, the discovery of the cell nucleus and other matters; and a study of muscle tissue in the lobster and shrimp. With a contemporary manuscript table of contents. With a tear into one figure in one of the folding plates repaired, a tear along the plate edge of the engraved title-page and occasional marginal tears, but otherwise a good copy and with generous margins.

LUBIENICZKI, Stanislas
Johann Aconius [Henricus Wetstein], Freistadt [Amsterdam], 1685. First Edition. Small 8vo. pp. [16], 304. This copy lacks the 2 leaf "Addenda & Emendata (apparently common according to the pagination recorded for many copies). S. Lubieniczki (1623-1675) was a Polish Socinian/Unitarian pastor and scholar. His "Historia" is an account of the Polish Reformation, especially the Polish Socinians or Minor Reformed Church (Polish Brethren) from it’s origins in the 16th century up till the expulsion of the Brethren from Rakow (1638). Material is also included about events in outlying areas such as Prussia, Lithuania, Transylvania and the Ukraine. Lubieniczki died leaving his work incomplete. The last two chapters are written by a different author. In a review of the 1995 English translation Paul W. Knoll says that this work is "a comprehensive treatment of an extraordinarily complex movement. It is unique in Polish historiography and in some ways unmatched by any other confessional history." [See Sixteenth Cent. Journ. XXVIII/2 (1997) p. 568]. [VD17 - 23: 237280Q; Graesse IV, p. 270; Bibliographia Sociniana 2069]. This copy is bound with Christoph Sandius’s "Bibliotheca anti-trinitariorum" (1684). pp. [16], 296. Contents include an Antitrinitarian bibliography and a collection of important historical documents. [VD17 - 23: 237261K; Graesse VI, p. 263; Bibliographia Sociniana 3116]. Both books were published or edited by Benedykt Wiszowaty (1650-1704), the great grand son of Faustus Socinus. [Liñan y Cisneros, Melchor, and Montero del Aguila, Diego Andrés]
[Spain, 1685. Folio. Dbd. Occasional contemporary marginalia. 7 1/2-inch tear in four terminal leaves, repaired with early glue and archival tape, affecting but not obscuring text. Very good. A rare Peruvian work, with debated authorship and printing, documenting a major conflict between government and ecclesiastical authorities in Peru on issues of the Church's responsibility to the Indians. The text, written by or on behalf of Don Melchor Liñan y Cisneros, the authoritarian archbishop of Lima and interim viceroy of Peru between 1678 and 1681, attacks recent legislation by the current viceroy, Melchor de Navarra y Rocafull, Duke of la Palata, intended to protect Peru's indigenous people from abuses by the Church. The first portion of the volume reprints the new laws, which establish various new rights of Indians with respect to the Church, including the power of police to bring charges against ecclesiastics for abuses of Indians, pay for all Indian labor done for the Church, and no involuntary offerings forced from Indians during masses, festivities, etc. Liñan y Cisneros responds to this "offense" against "ecclesiastical liberty" with a letter and legal argument against this legislation and similar recent treatises on the subject directed against the Church. Manuscript notes in the John Carter Brown copy and in the copy seen by Vargas Ugarte suggest that, despite Liñan y Cisneros's printed signature at the end of the volume, the bulk of the text was composed by the attorney and legal scholar, Diego Andrés Montero del Aguila. While Vargas Ugarte lists the work as a Lima im … [Click Below for Full Description]

Esquemeling, Alexander
London, 1685. Small quarto. 19th-century mottled calf, gilt, spine gilt extra, leather labels, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Extremities lightly worn; small chip to head of spine. The larger map in the second part is backed with closed tear repaired. Quite clean internally. A very good copy. The English edition of the first extensive account of the pirates of the West Indies, with all plates and map present. This copy is bound with the second edition of the first part, and the first edition of the second volume or fourth part, issued separately the following year and containing an account of South Seas adventures from the journal of Basil Ringrose. This adds the adventures of Captain Cooke, Sharp, and others who "lately setting forth from Jamaica, penetrated into the South-Sea, and there ransack't and pillaged...all they could meet." One of the most interesting pieces of early English Americana, this work has served as the basis for countless novels, stories, and dramas, as well as establishing the popular legends of many famous pirates. One pirate, Sir Henry Morgan, followed a very modern course and sued the author for defamation. He was awarded £200 for damages. Many of the plates are startling close-up portraits of now famous buccaneers. "This is the first complete edition" - Hill. "Frequently described as the greatest early book on piracy" - NMM.
