TRINITY HOUSE,
8vo., engraved frontispiece plate of the Trinity House coat of arms, (2) 220pp., title-page and A2 printed in red and black, and with a divisional title-page on N5r (Orders, constitutions, and by-laws), early ownership name on title ("Brand"), wanting the blank leaf H8, contemporary calf gilt, the sides generally rather worn, neatly rebacked, spine gilt and labelled. A very good crisp copy. Trinity House was originally a guild of "ship men and mariners" of England set up by Henry VIII in 1517, "to the praise and honour of the most glorious and individable Trinity ...... in the parish church of Deptford-Strond in our county of Kent". Its original purpose was to do all things necessary for the "relief, increase and augmentation of the shipping of this our realm of England". Elizabeth I extended the duties of the guild to the erection of sea-marks since "by the destroying and taking away of certain steeples, woods and other marks standing upon the main shores ...... being as beacons and marks of ancient time, divers ships have been miscarried, perished, and lost in the sea ......". Since then the Corporation of Trinity House has been the body responsible in England for the erection and maintenance of lighthouses, lightships, buoys, and other aids to navigation within the waters surrounding English shores. Samuel Pepys, Secretary for Admiralty Affairs from 1683 to 1689 under both Charles II and James II, had been largely responsible for the reformation at this time both of the Navy Board itself but also of the Trinity House. Its name derives from the church of Holy Trinity a … [Click Below for Full Description]

MITELLI Giuseppe Maria (1634 - 1718)
[Click Below for Full Description]

JURIEU (Pierre)]
Amsterdam, Henry Desbordes, 1685. Bel exemplaire. Reliure plein veau caillouté d'époque, dosà nerfs orné de fleurons dorés, tranches rouges.

BROWNE, Alexander after Sir Peter LELY
London: Sold by Alex Browne at ye blew balcony in little Queen Street, 1685. Mezzotint. Counterproof impression printed in reverse. Printed on watermarked laid paper. Closely trimmed outside platemark as usual. A nice impression in excellent condition. Image size: 12 7/16 x 9 ¾ inches. An extremely rare counterproof by Alexander Browne, the father of English mezzotint engraving. During the eighteenth century, England became the heart of the mezzotint trade, producing some of the most celebrated engravers and the most beautiful prints that the medium has ever witnessed. Invented in Germany in 1642, mezzotint engraving quickly became popular throughout Europe as a method of reproducing oil paintings. It was eagerly adopted by English printmakers, who instituted so many technological improvements that the method became known as "the English manner". English mezzotints were eagerly collected by European connoisseurs; and continental engravers traveled to England to study the technique. One of the earliest and most important English mezzotint engravers is the printseller Alexander Browne. Although it is unclear whether Browne was the engraver of his prints or simply the publisher, his series of portraits are some the earliest and most accomplished mezzotints produced in England during the seventeenth century. According to Walpole, in 1683 Browne obtained a patent for fourteen years to publish one hundred mezzotints after portraits by Van Dyck and Lely. Forgery; Perjury; Great Britain
1685. "Forgery and Perjury, Like Poisenous Vermin, Have Often Sucked Out, and Destroyed the Very Juyce and Beauty of Many Flourishing Flowers" [Forgery]. [Perjury]. [Great Britain]. Brief Reflections Upon the Inconveniencies Attending Wilful and Malitious Forgery and Perjury, With some Reasons Why Such Crimes Ought to be Made Felony. By a Truly Loyal Subject, And a Sincere Lover of His King, Country, And the Laws of this Realm [Running title].[London: Printed for Mark Pardoe, 1685]. 4 pp. Folio (11" x 6-1/2"). Single folded leaf bound into recent marbled boards, printed paper title label to spine, light soiling and a few minor stains, moderate edgewear and a few tiny tears. A well-preserved copy of a rare item. * Only edition. The anonymous author calls for the redefinition of the "pernicious and inseparable" common-law crimes of forgery and perjury as statutes, and thus felonious. This distinction would allow for the dispensing of capital sentences instead of the "minute punishment" of the pillory, fines or imprisonment, which "seldom produces any other effect than barely to make the Criminal the more incorrigible, and proves many times but as Sawce to craving Stomachs, preparing them the better to devour and consume the next dainties they can meet with" (2). OCLC locates 4 copies, none in North America (British Library, Cambridge University, National Library of Scotland, University of Wales, Lampeter), the ESTC adds 2 more (Bodleian Library, Dublin Honourable Society of King's Inns). English Short-Title Catalogue R41280.

[Gentleman of Elvas]
Paris: Denys Thierry, 1685. [24],300pp. 12mo. Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt extra. Corners bumped and rubbed. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedown, later bookplates on rear pastedown. Internally clean. Near fine. The first available edition of this extremely important narrative, preceded by the 1557 original (of which only four copies are known), and two issues published by Richard Hakluyt in 1609 and 1611, in English. The identity of the Gentleman of Elvas has remained a mystery. His narrative is the primary source for information concerning the De Soto expedition of 1539-43, the first investigation by Europeans of the southeast region of the United States. De Soto landed on the west coast of Florida in 1539, marching north through Georgia and west to Mobile Bay. His party reached the Mississippi River in 1541 and went perhaps as far as the present Oklahoma-Arkansas border. Returning east, De Soto died and was buried in the Mississippi. The survivors floated to the Gulf and made it to Mexico. SABIN 24864. SERVIES 218. PALAU 256843. CLARK I:8. JCB (2)II:1324.

MAIMBOURG, Louis. NALSON, John
London: Printed by R.H. for Thomas Dring, 1685. [20], 304, 307-410pp. Contemporary blind-ruled speckled calf, neatly rebacked to style with new contrasting morocco lettering-piece, gilt. A little rubbed, with slight loss to extremities. Small paper flaws or rust-holes to text of M1, T2 and LL2. Occasional marginal worming, with wormtrack to signatures Ss-Uu, all without loss of sense. Ink inscription (Liber Boyd Buisson?) to FFEP. Louis Maimbourg (1610-1686), French Jesuit historian. First published as L'Histoire des Croisades pour la deliverance de la Terre sainte (Paris, 1675) and dedicated to the 'Sun King' Louis XIV, this exhaustive history of seven Crusades is an unapologetically Catholic view of the second millennia conflicts between Western Christendom and Islam. This translation by Anglican clergyman and historian John Nalson (bap. 1637, d.1686) is dedicated to Henry Hyde, second Duke of Clarendon who was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in the year of its publication. [EUGENIUS, Johann] and Joannes EDELIUM.
Gerrare 231; Jähns, p. 1227; VD17 12:641431M (1 copy); cf. VD17 39:120516V (4 copies of 1st ed.). Second copy located, of the expanded second edition of a concise artillery manual. The present edition notes only that it was " ... beschrieben und vermehrt durch Joannem Edelium", but it is almost certainly an expanded edition of the same publisher's 1685 work with the same title, which explicitly notes Johann Eugenius as its author. Jähns approvingly says about this rare 1685 edition: "Das kleine, für die Brusttasche eingerichtete Büchlein ist prachtig angeordent und mit ganz guten Zeichnungen ausgestattet".With chapters on how to aim, how to fire, how to shoot at night, how to use a howitzer, what to do when ammunition jams, etc. With an inscription on the first flyleaf. Two plates and one table bound in erroneous order, a tear in one folding plate, some minor foxing and a few small stains; a good copy. Binding rubbed and with some damage to the hinges, but still firm..

Contemporary calf, spine with 6 raised bands richly gilt in compartments and with gilt morocco lettering piece (boards scratched, extremities and spine-ends worn, corners bumped), sprinkled edges. Minor browning of text, very few occasional spots, ink smudge at margin of pp.73 and 81, small burnhole in leaf 3P3 affecting one letter. A fine copy. ---- D.S.B. VII, p. 577; Honeyman 1886; Sotheran, Suppl. I, 1350. - FIRST EDITION of La Hire's extensive treatise on conic sections. La Hire published in 1673 his first work (in French) on conic sections, a work clearly showing the influence of Desargues. This Latin treatise is a much more general work, but it too served as a primary vehicle for the transmission of the ideas of Desargues, making use of Cartesian analytic geometry in its analyses and solutions. "Important for having started, with Pascal and Desargues, synthetic geometry" (Sotheran). Very Good.
