Burroughs, Jeremiah.
London: Pr. by W.W. for H. Sawbridge, 1685. 4to (19.6 cm, 7.75"). [6] ff., 208 pp. Classic Puritan counsel on how to accept affliction and loss with a humble heart, written by the man Thomas Brooks called "a prince of preachers." The preface here, which was signed by Thomas Goodwin, Sydrach Simpson, William Greenhil[l], Philip Nye, William Bridge, John Yates, and William Adderly, praises Burroughs' vastness and graciousness of spirit, and notes that he "lived and died in a fulness of honor and esteem with the best of men" (p. [iii]).    Originally published in 1648, two years after the author's death, this treatise continues to receive glowing recommendations as a study in achieving Christian peace even for modern readers.         ESTC R23842; Wing (rev. ed.) B6110. Recent blue marbled paper–covered boards, spine with printed paper label. Pages age-toned and cockled, with waterstaining to first 16 leaves; two leaves each with small burn spot affecting but not obscuring a few letters, one leaf with short tear from outer edge not extending into text; one leaf holed with loss of about ten letters. => A solid, very readable copy of this Christian classic in a good late 17th–century edition.

Goedart, Johannes, & Martin Lister
London: S. Smith, 1685. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo (180 x 115 mm). Contemporary limp vellum folded over at the fore-edge, handwritten title to spine, edges of text block red speckled. 21 folding engraved plates depicting numerous insects on each plate. Marks, spots, and dulling of the vellum, spine may have been cleaned in the past, hinges a little cracked but holding firm, light spotting and toning at the edges of the leaves, closed tear to the final plate in the addendum which depicts mussels. A very good, unsophisticated copy. Second Latin edition of this "extremely important and influential study" (Jorink, Reading the Book of Nature in the Dutch Golden Age, p. 201), the translation by Fellow of the Royal Society Martin Lister, with his notes and addendum on English species. Originally published in three volumes under the title Metamorphosis Naturalis between 1660 and 1669. The Dutch painter Johannes Goedart (also spelled Goedaert; 1617-1668) was the first European to "embark on a systematic study of the generation of insects" (Jorink, "Between Emblematics and the 'Argument from Design'", Early Modern Zoology, p. 156). Beginning in the 1630s, he painstakingly traversed the countryside around his home in Middelburg, collecting caterpillars and other insect larvae, raising them in glass jars, and carefully observing their "strange transformations". Although Goedart did not make any major scientific advances in entomology or taxonomy - he interpreted his observations within the framework of his religion and was a strong supporter of spontaneo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Great Britain - Treaties]
London, 1685. [4],269,[2]pp. Quarto. Modern half calf and paper boards, gilt leather label. First few leaves (including titlepage) chipped around edges, but generally clean and neat. A very good copy, with wide margins. A copy with a most significant provenance, this copy bears a contemporary manuscript note on the titlepage reading: "Belonging to the Secretary of State's Office. Home Dept." There is also a manuscript table of contents bound in between the titlepage and the page explaining the necessity for the work. The first edition of this collected printing of important British treaties, occasioned by the death of Charles II and containing a number of treaties of importance to America. The 1667 treaties with Spain, France, and the Dutch (Davenport 55, 58, and 57) made Spain for the first time acknowledge England's right to New World colonies, gave New York to the British, and swapped French Caribbean islands for Nova Scotia. Also included are commercial treaties in 1669 and 1670, and the treaties settling the Second Dutch War and again giving New York to the British in 1674 (see Davenport 62, 65, 66, 69, and 70). This 1685 edition is not in Sabin, who only notes the 1686 reprint. A nice collection, with the most significant of associations. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 685/80. GOLDSMITHS 2576. KRESS 1625. WING C3604A. ERASMO DE ROTTERDAM (Desiderio)

Increase Mather
MA: (1685). 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. Increase Mather (1639 - 1723) was a major figure in the early history of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was a Puritan minister who was involved with the government of the colony, the administration of Harvard College, and most notoriously, the Salem witch trials. He was the son of Richard Mather, and the father of Cotton Mather, both influential Puritan ministers. This leaf comes from the hand of the brother of Cotton Mather. Early American printed works, those printed before 1700, are quite rare; the printing was wretched, the paper rough, and the quality of the whole effort poor. In this leaf one can clearly see the struggling American colonies and their efforts to achieve scholarly and religious independence. Leaf approx. 3.5x5.5 inches.. Paper. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding. Jacket: No Jacket Issued

PMM 143 for second ed.) - THIRD EDITION. "Boyle's New Experiments Physico-Mechanical... recounted experiments using a vacuum chamber or 'air pump' which he constructed with the assistance of Hooke. Rejecting the scholastic notion that nature could not tolerate a vacuum, he showed how it was perfectly possible to produce one, and this enabled him to illustrate the characteristics and functions of the air by studying the effects of its withdrawal on flame, light, and living creatures. He also argued that certain characteristics of the air could only be explained in terms of the ingenious hypothesis that it had a certain weight and 'spring'" (ODNB).

La Hire published in 1673 his first work (in French) on conic sections, a work clearly showing the influence of Desargues. This Latin treatise is a much more general work, but it too served as a primary vehicle for the transmission of the ideas of Desargues, making use of Cartesian analytic geometry in its analyses and solutions. "Important for having started, with Pascal and Desargues, synthetic geometry" (Sotheran). Very Good.
