LUCAS, Richard
London: Sam Smith, 1685. FIRST EDITION. With an unrecorded title page, most likely an earlier issue than the more common one (see below). Full morocco in an antique style; paper somewhat browned, repairs to a few leaves, including tears on A3 and R4 (with loss of a few words). First edition of this noteworthy treatise describing the religious and moral obligations of those who become servants (referred to in the book as "choosing service"). The scope of the book is quite broad; the author starts with the responsibilities of the parents of children who know they will choose service as a livelihood. Those parents are to tend to the education of children who will choose service. Such children "must accustom themselves at home to the duties they must practice in service." From there, we learn the qualifications which make a good servant, including fear of, and dependence upon God, contentment in their condition, love of their masters, humility, meekness and patience, faithfulness, industry and discretion. The author continues by treating the servant's obligation to religion and the practice thereof, and a servant's responsibilities toward the children of the Master, including the care of their morals, as well as toward strangers. Perhaps most interesting is the discussion of the relationship between servants, including those working for the same Master and those working for others. Examples of prayers are provided, including, for example, for those just entering service, for fidelity to the Master and trust in God, and for performance of duties. A fascinating look into the mi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Good copy in original full calf gilt, binding very nice and bright, but a deep gouge to the fore edge of the book beginning on p. 87 and ending on p. 422, intruding into the middle of the outer margin as much as half an inch but not really affecting the text -- however, it is unsightly and a definite blemish on what would have been a splendid copy. Herman Witsius
1685. Condition: Very good. When ordering from the US, parcels may be subject to import tax and duty charges, which the buyer is responsible to pay. 1685 Economy of Covenants God & Man Dutch Hermann Witsius Covenantal Theology Hermann Witsius (1636 - 1708) was a Dutch theologian. While in his theology Witsius aimed at a reconciliation between the reigning orthodoxy and Covenant Theology (also known as federalism), he was first of all a Biblical theologian, his principal field being systematic theology. His chief work is entitled The Economy of the Covenants between God and Man (originally published in Latin: De oeconomia foderum Dei cum hominibus, Leeuwarden, 1677). He was induced to publish this work by his grief at the controversies between Voetians and Cocceians. Covenant theology (also known as Covenantalism, Federal theology, or Federalism) is a Calvinist conceptual overview and interpretive framework for understanding the overall flow of the Bible. It uses the theological concept of covenant as an organizing principle for Christian theology. We do not find any other examples printed as early as this one for sale anywhere else! However, we do find 1694 printings for sale for $900! Main author: Herman Witsius Title: Hermanni Witsii De oeconomia foederum Dei cum hominibus, libri quatuor. Published: Leovardiae : Apud J. Hagenaar, 1685. Language: Latin Notes & contents: · This was Herman Witsius' most important work. First published in 1677, it went through many editions and continued to be one of the works meant to end the many schisms which seem endemic to the Church. · … [Click Below for Full Description]

SARPI Paolo.
chez Henri Wetstein, 1685. Testo francese. Opera dedicata al Cancelliere di Francia Michel Le Tellier. Cm.15,8x9,2. Pg.(24), 332. Der 2. Band mit Werken (Übersetzungen) Maucroys. (vergl. Brunet III, 762).François de Maucroix, born in Noyon, (Oise) in 1619, died 1708, was a French poet and translator. He was a long-time friend of La Fontaine; their mutual literary influence was very important, and it was to him that La Fontaine addressed The first book of fables (III), The Miller, his Son and the Ass. He was ordained as a priest, and in the Spring of 1647, he purchased a prebendary. He remained canon of Rheims until his death in 1708. Contrary to the popular legend, de Maucroix was not definitely a classmate of La Fontaine\'s at Chateau Thierry. Pierre Clarac has remarked that, at about the age of 25, while they were a part of the Knights of the Round Table (Literary Circle), who were a group of (\'robins\'?) who met from 1646 to discuss their works and diverse other subjects, that although being on first-name term with Pellison and Cassandre, … [Click Below for Full Description]

WOTTONG, Sir Henry
London : Printed for B. Tooke and T. Sawbridge, 1685. Fourth edition. - 1685 Henry Wotton Reliquiae Wottonianae English Literature Education Philosophy “An ambassador is an honest man sent abroad to lie and intrigue for the benefit of his country.” – Henry Wotton This fourth edition of “Reliquiae Wottonianae” is the final edition of this book to be printed, and yes, while it is not a first printing, this edition includes additional matter that was never included in other editions (see pages 585-713; Buxton Forman, 1223). Among the contents of this book is “A philosophical survey of education or moral architecture.” Wotton, mostly known as a diplomat and a poet, was a staunch activist for education. This volume includes a life of Henry Wotton by Izaak Walton. Henry Wotton was not known for his writings, in fact, his portfolio is quite sparse compared to his contemporaries. He is regarded for only two major works – “Elements of Architecture” and this work, “Reliquiae Wottonianae.” Of the twenty-five poems printed in this book, only fifteen are actually by Wotton. But two those pieces have solidified themselves as some of the best-known poems in English: • “On his Mistris, the Queen of Bohemia” • “The Character of a Happy Life” Item number: #493 Price: $599 WOTTON, Sir Henry "Reliquiae Wottonianae", or a Collection of lives, letters, poems, with characters of sundry personages and other incomparable pieces of language and art, also additional letters to several persons not before printed, … [Click Below for Full Description]

SARPI Paolo.
chez Henri Wetstein, A Amsterdam, 1685. Testo francese. Opera dedicata al Cancelliere di Francia Michel Le Tellier. Cm.15,8x9,2. Pg.(24), 332. Sobria legatura in piena pelle coeva, con titoli e fregi decorativi impressi in oro al dorso a sei scomparti. Tagli spruzzati e fogli di guardia marmorizzati. Di modesta provenienza, Paolo Sarpi (Pietro il suo vero nome, Venezia, 1552-1623) si ascrisse nel 1565 all'Ordine dei Servi (o Serviti). Distintosi in numerosi campi dello scibile, fu Vescovo di Mantova e dal 1585 al 1588, Procuratore Generale dell'Ordine a Roma, e in seguito incappò nelle maglie dell'Inquisizione e fu accusato di eresia per i suoi princìpi. Il presente testo costituisce la prima, stimata versione francese, opera di Abraham Nicolas Amelot de la Houssaye (1634-1706), del "Trattato delle materie beneficiarie", pubblicato postumo a Mirandola nel 1676 e immediatamente posto all'indice. "Opera assai notevole per la matura fermezza della dottrina e dello stile; in essa, attraverso il severo e minuzioso esame della realtà giuridica e storica, campeggia quell'aspirazione alla ideale semplicità evangelica della Chiesa primitiva, che è il sentimento che sta alla base della più impegnativa e rappresentativa opera sarpiana, la "Istoria del Concilio Tridentino" (Luigi Vigliani). 250 gr. La Fontaine, Jean de und François de Maucroix;
Paris, chez Claude Barbin, 1685 - Titel, 9 Blatt, 275 (+1) Seiten / Titel, [In erster Ausgabe! - In französischer Sprache. * Brunet: Der erste Band durchgehend von LaFontaine und mit 6 neuen Geschichten als Ertstausgabe, 10 neue Fabeln und einige Gedichte. Der 2. Band mit Werken (Übersetzungen) Maucroys. (vergl. Brunet III, 762). François de Maucroix, born in Noyon, (Oise) in 1619, died 1708, was a French poet and translator. Contrary to the popular legend, de Maucroix was not definitely a classmate of La Fontaine`s at Chateau Thierry. Pierre Clarac has remarked that, at about the age of 25, while they were a part of the Knights of the Round Table (Literary Circle), who were a group of (`robins`?) who met from 1646 to discuss their works and diverse other subjects, that although being on first-name term with Pellison and Cassandre, Maucroix still used the more formal `vous` when addressing La Fontaine. Some authors have theorised that they … [Click Below for Full Description]

[HOWARD William, Viscount Stafford]
London: Printed for S. N. and Sold by W. Freeman near Temple-bar in Fleetstreet, 1685. Second edition. original brown roan, morocco gilt lettered label, decorated/stained (?) edges. Front cover detaching, worn at edges and spine ends, interior fine. Octavo. 302 pp. Elaborate frontispiece illustration of the trial and execution of William Howard William Howard, 1st Viscount Stafford, FRS (30 November 1614 – 29 December 1680) was the youngest son of Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel, and his wife, the former Alethea Talbot. A Fellow of the Royal Society from 1665, he was a Royalist supporter before being falsely implicated by Titus Oates in the later discredited "Popish Plot", and executed for treason. He was beatified as a Catholic martyr in 1929. The Popish Plot was a fictitious conspiracy concocted by Titus Oates that between 1678 and 1681 gripped the Kingdoms of England and Scotland in anti-Catholic hysteria. Oates alleged that there existed an extensive Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II, accusations that led to the executions of at least 22 men and precipitated the Exclusion Bill Crisis. Eventually Oates' intricate web of accusations fell apart, leading to his arrest and conviction for perjury. The main evidence against Stafford came from Titus Oates, who said he had seen a document from the Pope naming Stafford as a conspirator; and from Stephen Dugdale, who testified that Stafford had tried to persuade him to kill the King when Stafford was visiting Dugdale's employers, the Astons, at their country house, Tixall, Staffordshire. A third and most d … [Click Below for Full Description]
