FIRST EDITION, with engraved portrait frontispiece by Loggan, and with 10 folding engraved plates, diagrams in the text, short portion of the top edge of 1 plate protruding slightly, a few scattered spots and minor browning, pp. [xvi], 374, [iv], 17, [i], 76 [i.e.176], [i], 17, folio, sumptuously bound in contemporary red morocco, gilt panelled sides, spine richly gilt, gilt edges, later pastedowns, minor shefl-wear, very good. A choice copy of Wallis's famous mathematical work on algebra, his only book to be published in English, and the first recorded effort to give a graphical interpretation of the complex roots of a real quadratic equation. Some of his greatest work are contained here, 'including an exposition of infinite series and the first printed account . of Newton's pioneering results. Wallis had long been afraid that foreigners might claim the glory of Newton's achievements as their own before Newton had done so . In addition the book contains a full exposition of Algebra with its history in a hundred chapters, a feat never previously attempted by any author' (DSB). Wallis also devoted the final 28 chapters to a discussion of the methods of exhaustion and of indivisibles with reference to the Arithmetica infinitorum. A number of shorter treatises on analytic three dimensional geometry and sundry other topics of great significance are included, as well as various supplementary treatises concluding with Caswell's A Brief (but Full) Account of the Doctrine of Trigonometry. FOUQUET, Marie
A Lyon : Chez Jean Certe, rue Maerciere, a la Trinite, 1685. First edition. 1685 1ed Charitable Remedies Fouquet Healing Syphilis Cures Medicine Disease “One of the most famous collections of popular remedies!” The ‘Remedies’ of Madame Fouquet was a popular book of medicines, healing, and healthy recipes, originally written in the late 17th-century (1685). Her situation was a unique experience for women in any scientific field during her day. Except – it wasn’t. According to Doig and Sturzer, “Although she helped many people, she continues to this day to be given credit for something she actually never did. Marie Fouquet was a very religious woman who expended much energy and money in organizing care for and distributing medicine to the poor. Although she is often credited with the authorship of ‘Recueil de receptes choisies, experimentees as well as the receipies, she neither wrote the book nor developed the formulas! – (D&S, 131) “The most prominent of the charitable handbooks, and perhaps the most successful of its kind in early modern Europe” (Porter 103). This book describes medical work, experiments, and treatments that she herself developed – including syphilis! Item number: #559 Price: $499 FOUQUET, Marie Les remedes charitables de Madame Fouquet : pour guerir a peu de frais toute sorte de maux tant internes qu'externes, inveterez, et qui ont passe jusques a present pour incurables, experimentez par la meme dame . divisez en deux parties. OLLYFFE, Thomas.
1685. [1], 9 ll.Wholly engraved English dictionary of calligraphic abbreviations of Latin words. It comprises 600 abbreviations in the court hand, with their significations written out in full in engrossing and secretary hands. The work was published by the writing master-master Thomas Ollyffe (fl. 1685- ca. 1725), who was an expert in these hands used at court. The gothic court hand is difficult to read, so that the book remains a valuable aid for anyone studying documents in that hand. Very good copy, upper margin slightly frayed and title-page a bit thumbed.l ESTC T135970 (2 copies); Heal, English writing-masters, pp. 81-82; WorldCat (5 copies).

This adds the adventures of Captain Cooke, Sharp, and others who "lately setting forth from Jamaica, penetrated into the South-Sea, and there ransack't and pillaged...all they could meet." One of the most interesting pieces of early English Americana, this work has served as the basis for countless novels, stories, and dramas, as well as establishing the popular legends of many famous pirates. One pirate, Sir Henry Morgan, followed a very modern course and sued the author for defamation. He was awarded £200 for damages. Many of the plates are startling close-up portraits of now famous buccaneers. "This is the first complete edit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tate, Nahum
Printed: 1685. 1652-1715 Octavo, . First (and only)edition A-Z, Aa-Ee8, Ff7 (last verso blank). This copy is bound in full nineteenth century mottled calf, slightly rubbed, persereving the spine and label, a good copy This collection includes poems by the Earl of Rochester, Earl of Roscommon, and Earl of Dorset, Cowley, Tate, Evelyn, Waller, and others. Tate, Nahum (c.1652-1715), poet, playwright, and translator, probably born in Ireland... He lived there as a professional writer (with perhaps a brief period as a schoolmaster between 1687 and 1692) for the rest of his life. During the early 1680s Tate wrote committedly in support of Charles II, and initially welcomed James II"s succession in 1685. But he seems to have become rapidly disenchanted with James"s extreme pro-Catholic policies, and at the revolution of 1688-9 transferred his allegiance to William III, whom he hailed as a pious peacemaker and defender of English liberty. After the death of Thomas Shadwell in 1692, on 8 December Tate was appointed to the poet laureateship, a position which he held for life... In 1677 he published his own collection of Poems: sixty-nine short pieces, including love lyrics, melancholy Flatmanesque reflections, and one poem ('On the Present Corrupted State of Poetry') which provides early evidence of his pious tendencies. An expanded and revised edition of the collection, with many metrical and stylistic improvements, appeared in 1684. [Oxford DNB]

Sam Smith. With an unrecorded title page, most likely an earlier issue than the more common one (see below). Full morocco in an antique style; paper somewhat browned, repairs to a few leaves, including tears on A3 and R4 (with loss of a few words). First edition of this noteworthy treatise describing the religious and moral obligations of those who become servants (referred to in the book as "choosing service"). The scope of the book is quite broad; the author starts with the responsibilities of the parents of children who know they will choose service as a livelihood. Those parents are to tend to the education of children who will choose service. Such children "must accustom themselves at home to the duties they must practice in service." From there, we learn the qualifications which make a good servant, including fear of, and dependence upon God, contentment in their condition, love of their masters, humility, meekness and patience, faithfulness, industry and discretion. The author continues by treating the servant's obligation to religion and the practice thereof, and a servant's responsibilities toward the children of the Master, including the care of their morals, as well as toward strangers. Perhaps most interesting is the discussion of the relationship between servants, including those working for the same Master and those working for others. Examples of prayers are provided, including, for example, for those just entering service, for fidelity to the Master and trust in God, and for performance of duties. A fascinating look into the mindset of the seventeenth centur … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lach & V. Kley III, pp. 1190-1194; ad 1: Cordier, Indosinica, col. 947; STCN (2 copies); ad 2: Cordier, Sinica, 953; STCN (5 copies); ad 3: Cordier, Sinica, 941; STCN (3 copies); Satow 60. Three Dutch editions of works on the diplomatic relations between France and Siam in 1685-1687. In 1684 a Siamese embassy had visited the court of King Louis XIV of France, hoping to strengthen relations with France to counter-balance the British and Dutch influence in Southeast Asia. In response France send its own embassy to Siam under the leadership of the Chevalier de Chaumont. Accompanying De Chaumont were the Abbé de Choisy and various Jesuits including Guy Tachard.Included in this volume are the accounts written by De Choisy and Tachard, both telling essentially the same story, but also complementing and supplementing each other. In contrast, the account written by Tachard on the official orders of king Louis XIV, "was designed to keep alive the belief that Siam and its king were ripe for conversion, especially by the Jesuits, and that France should do its utmost to develop closer economic, political and intellectual ties" (Lach & V. Kley). Added to these official "observations" are Tachards own, mostly on natural history. In 1687 Tachard returned to Siam, accompanying the second French embassy and a French expeditionary force. Also present were 14 Jesuit scientists, led by Tachard, at the reque … [Click Below for Full Description]
