UNIDENTIFIED.
England, 1685. On offer is an original, fascinating though flawed historically significant ancient 1685 manuscript. Dated and signed February 10th 1685 handwritten a mere four days after the death of Charles II, referencing the new king James II two months prior to his coronation at Westminster Abbey by and for the British Royal Postal Service being a Royal warrant and division of financial profits of the British post office to Prince George among other notables. The 44 page document begins: "Our Will And Pleasure Is That You Prepare A Bill For Our Royall Signature To Pass Our Great Seale Of England in the words or to the effect following, James the Second and to all to whom these presents shall come Greetings. Whereas in pursuance of and according to a …. Covenant and agreement I will part …in accordance articles relating to the marriage and solemnized between our dearly beloved son in law Prince George hereditary of Denmark and our dearly beloved daughter Anne Princess of Denmark his wife for the selling of the yearly…of 5,000 pounds of lawful English money out of the …and profit of the post office or general letter office of office of the post general and the yearly sum of 5,000 pounds more of like money part of the 24,000 pounds…to pay….." Historians and researchers will agree this document superbly outlines the wheels of governance and greed, patronage and politics will out as the new king doles out to his own and immediately showers those he favors with wealth. While the document has suffered in its 400+ years having signs of old water damage, chipping around the edge … [Click Below for Full Description]

LUBIENICZKI, Stanislas
Freistadt [Amsterdam]: Johann Aconius [Henricus Wetstein], 1685. First edition. Hardcover. First Edition. Small 8vo. pp. [16], 304. This copy lacks the 2 leaf “Addenda & Emendata (apparently common according to the pagination recorded for many copies). S. Lubieniczki (1623-1675) was a Polish Socinian/Unitarian pastor and scholar. His “Historia” is an account of the Polish Reformation, especially the Polish Socinians or Minor Reformed Church (Polish Brethren) from it’s origins in the 16th century up till the expulsion of the Brethren from Rakow (1638). Material is also included about events in outlying areas such as Prussia, Lithuania, Transylvania and the Ukraine. Lubieniczki died leaving his work incomplete. The last two chapters are written by a different author. In a review of the 1995 English translation Paul W. Knoll says that this work is “a comprehensive treatment of an extraordinarily complex movement. It is unique in Polish historiography and in some ways unmatched by any other confessional history.” [See Sixteenth Cent. Journ. XXVIII/2 (1997) p. 568]. [VD17 - 23: 237280Q; Graesse IV, p. 270; Bibliographia Sociniana 2069]. This copy is bound with Christoph Sandius’s “Bibliotheca anti-trinitariorum” (1684). pp. [16], 296. The items have 6 leaves, beginning , title page, verso blank, 1st page text numbered 3 collation code A2, pages numbered 4-5-6-7, 7 verso blank. This is followed by another pamphlet (Wing J186 this number and erasure are evident on it's title page, pencil, ) "His Majesties Gracious Declaration To All His Loving Subjects For Liberty of Conscience" page 1 collation 'A' and numbering 4 pages. Antique print, titled: 'Carte Generale du Monde, ou Description du Monde Terrestre & Aquatique / Generale Waereld Kaart, of Beschryving van de Land en Water Waereld' - This is Pierre Mortier's world map drawn on Mercator's projection. It depicts California as an island and the Detroit d'Anian connected by dotted lines through a Northwest Passage to Button's Bay located to the west of Hudson Bay. There is an erroneous large lake shown as the source for the R. de Nort (Rio Grande River) located in the Southwest, as well as an early, open-ended version of the Great Lakes named Mer Douce. A small coastline of New Zealand appears in the Pacific. The northeast coast of Asia is severely truncated and shows Witsen's Cap de Glaces. Australia's northern coast is shown connected to New Guinea, and two disjointed coastlines appear to the south, including Van Diemen's Land. The most interesting features of the map are the five spheres presented along the top depicting day and night, the flood, the phases of the moon, and the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. The map was precisely engraved by Jan van Luchenburg (imprint at lower left). This is the first state with Mortier's imprint at bottom right. Engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Pierre Mortier' after an anonymous artist. [Gentleman of Elvas]
Paris: Denys Thierry, 1685. [24],300pp. 12mo. Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt extra. Corners bumped and rubbed. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedown, later bookplates on rear pastedown. Internally clean. Near fine. The first available edition of this extremely important narrative, preceded by the 1557 original (of which only four copies are known), and two issues published by Richard Hakluyt in 1609 and 1611, in English. The identity of the Gentleman of Elvas has remained a mystery. His narrative is the primary source for information concerning the De Soto expedition of 1539-43, the first investigation by Europeans of the southeast region of the United States. De Soto landed on the west coast of Florida in 1539, marching north through Georgia and west to Mobile Bay. His party reached the Mississippi River in 1541 and went perhaps as far as the present Oklahoma-Arkansas border. Returning east, De Soto died and was buried in the Mississippi. The survivors floated to the Gulf and made it to Mexico. SABIN 24864. SERVIES 218. PALAU 256843. CLARK I:8. JCB (2)II:1324.

ARCHIMEDES
1685. Woodcut printer's device on title, numerous woodcut illus. in the text, & a woodcut vignette on verso of final leaf. Title printed in red & black. 4 p.l., 296 pp. Folio, cont. vellum over boards (first four leaves with some light browning & staining). Palermo: C. Hesperi, 1685. First edition of Maurolico's important edition of Archimedes' works, based upon an earlier partial edition by Borelli (Messina: 1670-72), which was almost completely lost.Maurolico's edition was largely prepared in 1534 and 1547-50 and remained in manuscript for many years after his death. Maurolico's "method of redaction is suggested in the preface. After enumerating and summarising Archimedes' works, Maurolico states that he has tried to make the works more easily intelligible by adding many lemmas, by demonstrating many things omitted by Archimedes, and by treating of the centres of gravity of solids...Maurolico does not hesitate to re-arrange Archimedes' master work, the De Sphaera et Cylindro, often substituting what he claims to be a better proof or enunciation for that of the original...It is, however, in the De Aequeponderantibus that Maurolico makes his most drastic re-arrangement of the Archimedean material and also his most important contributions to mathematics... "Maurolico organises the treatise (which he calls De Momentis Aequalibus) and his own additions into four books. The first deals with general principles relating to centres of gravity and equilibrium. The following three books concern the determination of centres of gravity in plane figures; paraboloids; and sph … [Click Below for Full Description]
