M. Roos). L'edizione fu approntata in forma estremamente composita, sicché pochi sono gli esemplari perfettamente conformi fra loro quanto a collazione testuale e iconografica: "it is bibliographically extremely complex. It was published in parts, and few copies appear to be identical" (G. L. Wilkins). Shakespeare, William
London: Printed for H. Herringman, E. Brewster, and R. Bentley, at the Anchor in the New Exchange, The Crane in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and in Russel-Street Covent-Garden, London. 1685. 4th folio, 1st issue, of Shakespeare's complete plays, the paramount work in all of English literature. Fine 19th century full blind-tooled morocco, gilt titled, gilt edges, satisfying condition by any standard, with no repair, a nicely executed, beautiful and distinctive antique, but here's your scrupulously dissected examination: Portrait, title page and 25 other leaves lightly stained, minor chips and short tears to some blank margins (and only the blank margins), a dozen tiny pin holes (mostly rust), Ccc6 with the margin slightly miscut by 1/16" at 2 corners, a paper flaw just under the upper rule of Ii2, but don't be distracted. This is (withal) a complete and perfect folio, tall (14 1/16"), wide (8 15/16"), and read the next sentence with attention, because you won't read it often. Far beyond the usual, every single page, and every single letter of text is present and valid, with no facsimile. That means there are no holes creating any missing letters, and (even more remarkably) no (zero) leaves have been remargined or extended, meaning no leaves were supplied from another copy so our 4th folio is complete as issued. The provenance is soothing. Ex-Elizabeth Young, the initial owner, with her ink signature to the title page, a few letters of her signature are rusted. Ex-Thomas Jefferson McKee (bookplate) sold at his auction (Anderson's, NY, April 30, 1901, lot 2602), and the McKee sale … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antique print, titled: 'T.82.' - Anatomical view of the muscle tissue of the lower leg and foot. Etching / engraving on hand laid paper. Watermark: Large coat of arms with a french lily. "Description: Published in "Anatomia Humani Corporis ", by Govart Bidloo, Amsterdam 1685 or from: 'Anatomia Corporum Humanorum' by William Cowper, 1739. The major source of this work was the Dutch anotomist Goverd Bidloo and his landmark work titled: 'Anatomia Humani Corporis' (1685). What started as an English translation of Bidloo's work first published in 1698 ended in a court fought battle over plagiatism by Cowper. Cowper did not even mention Bidloo in his work. The famous plates in this work (by Gerard de Lairesse) are identical to the ones from Bidloo's work and actually even bought from Bidloo. Cowper added some of his own new plates. The plates are particularly valued for their artistic quality.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Gerard de Lairesse' after own design. BELLINI, Lorenzo (1643-1703); Francesco REDI (1626-1697).
Francofurti & Lipsiæ,: Sumptibus Johannis Grossii, 1685., 1685. Small 4to. [32], 688, [32] pp. Title printed in red & black, index. Original full vellum. Early engraved heraldic bookplate "In Promptu. Trotter family library, probably by John Trotter, d. 1718, who was a book collector. This copy is signed "T. Burnet" and bears Trotter's [fl.1690-1707] typical inscription, "Cost vt. 18th at Dr. Burnet's auction by Alexr. Hendersone, Ed-. Feb. 1705. Rare. THOMAS BURNET'S COPY, WITH HIS SIGNATURE. First issued in 1683, this is the second edition of Bellini's classic work on chemical analysis of urine. "Bellini realized the value of the urine as an aid to diagnosis and insisted on its chemical analysis in pathological condition." - Garrison and Morton 1462. Note: In the 1943 first edition of Garrison and Morton, item 3624 gave this 1685 issue as the first edition, an error that was corrected in the second edition of this authority. The work also contains Bellini's valuable studies on the pulse, the most important diseases of the head and chest, observations on insanity and epilepsy, a section on palpitation of the heart, etc. Johannes Bohn contributed the preface. "Bellini's most important book, De urinis etpulsibus etmissione sanguinis, was published in Bologna in 1683. Now very rare, this 606 page volume represented the first significant attempt to frame medical theory in terms of iatromechanism. In some respects, it was an extension of Borelli's De motu animalium, published 3 years earlier." - Bruce Fye, "Lorenzo Bellini," [Series: Profiles in Cardiology]. Clin. [Mate] [Paraguay] [Bégon, Michel].
Rare French manuscript recipe for preparing the "Paraguayan herb" (Mate) for use as a digestive aid; curiously enough, it is still drank today with the same purpose. In Uruguay, Paraguay and mostly Argentina, it could be regarded as the most profusely used herb, served with either hot water or cold juice, poured into a "calabaza" or recipient and absorbed through a "bombilla". The manuscript includes details on the way serving it, and it´s properties; it ends with a short explanation of Paraguay, and it´s geographical location "proche le Perou". It reads, in part and in rough translation: "If it is used in the morning fasting and is taken with a full vessel of hot water, it cleanses the kidneys and chases out in the urine all the 'crudites' of the stomach, leaving the belly free". Provenance: from the papers of Michel Bégon (1638 - 1710); Bégon was a French civil servant and colonial administrator who served for a while in Canada, and then in the Caribbean at Martinique. In the 1680s he became intendant at Santo Domingo, and was later sent to Martinique for official duties.

[Click Below for Full Description]

UNIDENTIFIED.
England, 1685. On offer is an original, fascinating though flawed historically significant ancient 1685 manuscript. Dated and signed February 10th 1685 handwritten a mere four days after the death of Charles II, referencing the new king James II two months prior to his coronation at Westminster Abbey by and for the British Royal Postal Service being a Royal warrant and division of financial profits of the British post office to Prince George among other notables. The 44 page document begins: "Our Will And Pleasure Is That You Prepare A Bill For Our Royall Signature To Pass Our Great Seale Of England in the words or to the effect following, James the Second and to all to whom these presents shall come Greetings. Whereas in pursuance of and according to a …. Covenant and agreement I will part …in accordance articles relating to the marriage and solemnized between our dearly beloved son in law Prince George hereditary of Denmark and our dearly beloved daughter Anne Princess of Denmark his wife for the selling of the yearly…of 5,000 pounds of lawful English money out of the …and profit of the post office or general letter office of office of the post general and the yearly sum of 5,000 pounds more of like money part of the 24,000 pounds…to pay….." Historians and researchers will agree this document superbly outlines the wheels of governance and greed, patronage and politics will out as the new king doles out to his own and immediately showers those he favors with wealth. While the document has suffered in its 400+ years having signs of old water damage, chipping around the edge … [Click Below for Full Description]
