Early engraved heraldic bookplate "In Promptu. Trotter family library, probably by John Trotter, d. 1718, who was a book collector. This copy is signed "T. First issued in 1683, this is the second edition of Bellini's classic work on chemical analysis of urine. "Bellini realized the value of the urine as an aid to diagnosis and insisted on its chemical analysis in pathological condition." - Garrison and Morton 1462. Note: In the 1943 first edition of Garrison and Morton, item 3624 gave this 1685 issue as the first edition, an error that was corrected in the second edition of this authority. The work also contains Bellini's valuable studies on the pulse, the most important diseases of the head and chest, observations on insanity and epilepsy, a section on palpitation of the heart, etc. Johannes Bohn contributed the preface. "Bellini's most important book, De urinis etpulsibus etmissione sanguinis, was published in Bologna in 1683. Now very rare, this 606 page volume represented the first significant attempt to frame medical theory in terms of iatromechanism. In some respects, it was an extension of Borelli's De motu animalium, published 3 years earlier." - Bruce Fye, "Lorenzo Bellini," [Series: Profiles in Cardiology]. Clin. [Mate] [Paraguay] [Bégon, Michel].
Rare French manuscript recipe for preparing the "Paraguayan herb" (Mate) for use as a digestive aid; curiously enough, it is still drank today with the same purpose. In Uruguay, Paraguay and mostly Argentina, it could be regarded as the most profusely used herb, served with either hot water or cold juice, poured into a "calabaza" or recipient and absorbed through a "bombilla". The manuscript includes details on the way serving it, and it´s properties; it ends with a short explanation of Paraguay, and it´s geographical location "proche le Perou". It reads, in part and in rough translation: "If it is used in the morning fasting and is taken with a full vessel of hot water, it cleanses the kidneys and chases out in the urine all the 'crudites' of the stomach, leaving the belly free". Provenance: from the papers of Michel Bégon (1638 - 1710); Bégon was a French civil servant and colonial administrator who served for a while in Canada, and then in the Caribbean at Martinique. In the 1680s he became intendant at Santo Domingo, and was later sent to Martinique for official duties.

[Click Below for Full Description]

UNIDENTIFIED.
England: (1685). Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. On offer is an original, fascinating though flawed historically significant ancient 1685 manuscript. Dated and signed February 10th 1685 handwritten a mere four days after the death of Charles II, referencing the new king James II two months prior to his coronation at Westminster Abbey by and for the British Royal Postal Service being a Royal warrant and division of financial profits of the British post office to Prince George among other notables. The 44 page document begins: "Our Will And Pleasure Is That You Prepare A Bill For Our Royall Signature To Pass Our Great Seale Of England in the words or to the effect following, James the Second and to all to whom these presents shall come Greetings. Whereas in pursuance of and according to a .... Johann Aconius [Henricus Wetstein], Freistadt [Amsterdam], 1685. First Edition. Small 8vo. pp. [16], 304. This copy lacks the 2 leaf "Addenda & Emendata (apparently common according to the pagination recorded for many copies). S. Lubieniczki (1623-1675) was a Polish Socinian/Unitarian pastor and scholar. His "Historia" is an account of the Polish Reformation, especially the Polish Socinians or Minor Reformed Church (Polish Brethren) from it’s origins in the 16th century up till the expulsion of the Brethren from Rakow (1638). Material is also included about events in outlying areas such as Prussia, Lithuania, Transylvania and the Ukraine. Lubieniczki died leaving his work incomplete. The last two chapters are written by a different author. In a review of the 1995 English translation Paul W. Knoll says that this work is "a comprehensive treatment of an extraordinarily complex movement. It is unique in Polish historiography and in some ways unmatched by any other confessional history." [See Sixteenth Cent. Journ. XXVIII/2 (1997) p. 568]. [VD17 - 23: 237280Q; Graesse IV, p. 270; Bibliographia Sociniana 2069]. Having compared the first item to Wing listing J225 all seems correct, it seems to have previously been attributed as C3166 which is now a cancelled listing. The items have 6 leaves, beginning , title page, verso blank, 1st page text numbered 3 collation code A2, pages numbered 4-5-6-7, 7 verso blank. This is followed by another pamphlet (Wing J186 this number and erasure are evident on it's title page, pencil, ) "His Majesties Gracious Declaration To All His Loving Subjects For Liberty of Conscience" page 1 collation 'A' and numbering 4 pages. Based on this I presume the overall collation to be Folio. Publication statement last page "By His Majesties Special Command" "London, Printed By Charles Bill, Henry Hills, and Thomas Newcomb Printers To The Kings Most Excellent Majesty. 1687. The title pages have sootiness and creasing to a surprising degree and the other pages too but less so. Will shoot title page for the books listing. Antique print, titled: 'Carte Generale du Monde, ou Description du Monde Terrestre & Aquatique / Generale Waereld Kaart, of Beschryving van de Land en Water Waereld' - This is Pierre Mortier's world map drawn on Mercator's projection. It depicts California as an island and the Detroit d'Anian connected by dotted lines through a Northwest Passage to Button's Bay located to the west of Hudson Bay. There is an erroneous large lake shown as the source for the R. de Nort (Rio Grande River) located in the Southwest, as well as an early, open-ended version of the Great Lakes named Mer Douce. A small coastline of New Zealand appears in the Pacific. The northeast coast of Asia is severely truncated and shows Witsen's Cap de Glaces. Australia's northern coast is shown connected to New Guinea, and two disjointed coastlines appear to the south, including Van Diemen's Land. The most interesting features of the map are the five spheres presented along the top depicting day and night, the flood, the phases of the moon, and the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. The map was precisely engraved by Jan van Luchenburg (imprint at lower left). This is the first state with Mortier's imprint at bottom right. Engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Pierre Mortier' after an anonymous artist.
