LEEUWENHOEK, Antoni van.
- Dobell 8 & pp. 192-196; Verkruijsse, Romeyn de Hooghe 1685.07 First edition in the original Dutch, of seven of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's early letters announcing and illustrating his recent discoveries of the microscopic wonders of nature, six never before published in any language and nearly all offering (sometimes literally!) seminal revelations. They discuss the "little animals" he found in the semen of various animals, including birds and fish; the microstructure of various kinds of wood; the anatomy of a rat testicle and sperm cells, a micro-anatomical study of mussels and oysters, and microbes in the sap of vines; a follow-up to microbes in sap; and in the second part the structure of hair and the discovery of microbes in the faeces of a sick and a healthy human (both the author himself!); muscle fibres, the discovery of the cell nucleus and other matters; and a study of muscle tissue in the lobster and shrimp. With a contemporary manuscript table of contents. With a tear into one figure in one of the folding plates repaired, a tear along the plate edge of the engraved title-page and occasional marginal tears, but otherwise a good copy and with generous margins.

3 Tle. in 1 Band. Mit 2 gest. Frontispices, 4 gefalt.Tabellen und 286 Kupfertafeln auf 281 tls. gefalteten Bll., mit zus. 2210 Münzdarstellungen. 1 Bl., 363 S. 1 Bl., 62, 178 S., 6 Bll., 259 S. Prgt. d. Zt. 4 Graesse III, 314 Lipsius-L. I, 191 Humpert 10995. ADB XXII, 669). - Vorderes Gelenk außen angerissen. Wenige Bll. etwas fleckig. Insgesamt recht gutes Exemplar!

AMIENS, Jean-Louis d’
Jacques et Nicolas Le Gras et Antoine Dezallier, Amiens & se Vend, a Paris 1685 - Large Folio. Second Edition augmented. pp. [24], 708, 17, [1]. With moveable paper volvelle (wheel) for discovering solar and lunar eclipses past and present. Divided into four books each opening with an engraved historiated headpiece and decorative initial letters. The title page displays an engraved vignette / device. Contents include numerous astronomical tables as well as 9 fold out tables interspersed with the text. An engraving on p.315 depicts the Hebrew Tabernacle. Sturdily bound in contemporary sprinkled calf with spine gilt in 7 compartments. Some rubbing, wear and staining are present to the covers. A name is printed in an old hand on the upper margin of the title page; an obscured name is also printed in small letters on either side of the edition statement. The faded remnant of an old book seller’s stamp is present on the front free end paper. Pages 617-618 contain 3-4 small holes - not obscuring the table numbers. Pages 619-620 contain groupings of larger holes with a number of table numbers obscured. The interior is otherwise clean. The volvelle on page 223 is in excellent condition. Father Jean-Louis d’Amiens’s "L’Atlas des temps" (first published in 1683) is a chronographic, geographic and historical work which incorporates elements of cosmography and astronomy. The author apparently proposes naming a new chronological period the "Age of Louis the Great." Extensive sections are devoted to sacred and profane chronology, ancient and ecclesiastical calendars, … [Click Below for Full Description]

BIDLOO GODFRIET.
Amsterdam, Sumptibus viduae Joannis a Someren, haeredum Joannis a Dyk, Henrici & viduae Theodori Boom, 1685. In-folio; antiporta incisa in rame, ritratto dell'autore inciso da A. Blooteling da disegno di G. Lairesse, 5 cc., 105 (i. e. 107) tavv. incise in rame fuori testo, 62 cc. (testo); legatura coeva in tutta pelle, titolo e fregi in oro al dorso (piccoli restauri). Bell'esemplare stampato su carta forte. Prima edizione. "Anatomic illustration reached a high point of perfection in the striking plates in such works as Govert Bidloo's Anatomia" (Garrison). "The plates that illustrate Bidloo's Anatomia are original in pattern and are artistic in design. The Vesalian era was one in which each new author attempted to outdo its founder in accuracy and beauty of illustration. Bidloo attempts originality by introducing a new style in the pattern of his plates, and he chooses for his collaborator an artist with outstanding ability. This atlas of anatomy is a fine book and has hardly received the attention that it deserves" (Beekman). "Bidloo's chief work was his anatomical atlas. The first large-scale anatomical atlas since Vesalius' De Humani Corporis Fabrica (1543)" (DSB). Wellcome II, 165. Garrison-Morton 385. Normann 231. Choulant-Fran … [Click Below for Full Description]

OLLYFFE, Thomas.
ESTC T135970 (2 copies); Heal, English writing-masters, pp. 81-82; WorldCat (5 copies). Wholly engraved English dictionary of calligraphic abbreviations of Latin words. It comprises 600 abbreviations in the court hand, with their significations written out in full in engrossing and secretary hands. The work was published by the writing master-master Thomas Ollyffe (fl. 1685- ca. 1725), who was an expert in these hands used at court. The gothic court hand is difficult to read, so that the book remains a valuable aid for anyone studying documents in that hand. Very good copy, upper margin slightly frayed and title-page a bit thumbed.

[Slavery] [Porcio, Nicolas].
Exceptionally rare imprint, referring to the Spanish Assiento (or permission) to traffic black slaves to Nicolas Porcio and the troubles ensued. An Asiento was the permission the Spanish Government granted other countries or parties to sell peoples as slaves to the American colonies, between 1543 and 1834; this, as a result of the Spanish Crown reluctance to deal directly with slavery. Being granted an Asiento was not a minor issue, as they were few, and sometimes extended with a monopoly of the trade. Juan Barroso del Pozo and Nicolas Porcio (an Italian) were granted the Asiento for 6,5 years; by 1684, the company was in trouble, as Porcio who had moved to Cartagena, one of the entry ports- was unable to make his payments to the crown. Shortly before running into financial troubles, Porcio had had dealings with the pirate Van Hoorn, with whom had engaged a preliminary deal to trade in slaves. The imprint begins in an explanatory fashion, with the basics terms of the contract between Pozo and Porcio and the Spanish crown, explaining how they would have to import 10,000 tons, not specifying the cargo (that is, 10,000 tons of humans). Then proceeds to explain the complications encountered along the way. Although undated, the document relates to event which happened after 1682, and refers to the date 1685, so it can´t have been printed before that, and probably not much after; also, another imprint on the same subject, announcing the Assiento, is generally dates as 1683 "Señor : Don Nicolas Porcio, Dize : Que por assiento ajustado en el Año passado de 1682 se encargo de … [Click Below for Full Description]
