Meyer Cornelio
Stamperia del Lazzari Varese, 1685. Folio (cm. 38,9), 84 (di 91) cc.nn. Grandi capilettera ornati, fregi e finali incisi su legno. [Click Below for Full Description]

LA FONTAINE (Jean de)
A Amsterdam Chez Henry Desbordes, 1685. 2 volumes in 1. Small 8vo, 154 x 98 mms., pp. [xvi], 236; [viii], 216, engraved frontispiece, 58 half-page engraved vignettes, by Romain de Hooghe, with two additional vignettes of "le Savetier" tipped in at page 30 and "Le Paisan" at page 32 volume 1, "Le Juge de Méle" in table of contents for volume 1, "Dissertation sur la Joconde" and sixteen lines of text on page 211 of volume 1, title-page ruled in red, contemporary crushed red morocco, gilt borders on covers, gilt spine, all edges gilt; spine a bit darkened, but a very good copy with the later ownership "Dan. Spurgeon/ Eman. Coll. Cam." The Dutch artist and engraver Romeyn de Hooghe (10 September 1645 – 1708) probably produced more drawings, pictures, and prints than any other Dutch or indeed continental artist in the 17th century. La Fontaine's verses are usually described as "bawdy" or "ribald," and de Hooghe's illustrations do seem to fit the tales nicely. The French painter and engraver Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen (1720 – 1778) also produced some very fine images and engravings, and perhaps more erotic ones, for 18th century editions of La Fontaines fables. The illustrations did not appear in the first edition of 1665. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Click Below for Full Description]
