Mais deux ces pièces se sont solidifiées comme quelques-uns des … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry Elsinge; John Doddridge; R C; Henry Scobell
London: M Gillflower, 1685. Bound in full leather. Contains four volumes bound as one. Very scarce. Collates complete. Henry Scobell (c1610 - 1661) was an English Parliamentary official, and editor of official publications. He was clerk to the Long Parliament, and wrote on parliamentary procedure and precedents. Sir John Doddridge (1555 - 1628) was a judge. As a lawyer Dodderidge was immensely well respected. He was known as the Sleeping Judge, not because of any shortcoming on his part, but because of his habit of concentrating on legal argument with eyes firmly closed. Dodderidge got to the heart of matters very quickly, and his arguments--as advocate, as judge, and as parliamentarian--had a compelling lucidity. His writings show the same quality. CONDITION In a full calf binding. There is significant wear to the extremities including heavy rubbing with some loss to the leather and cracking to the spine. The front board is detached but present. The binding is generally tight and firm although it is coming loose at the bottom of the volume. There is an ink stamp mark to the front pastedown and a signature and annotation to the first title page. A few of the pages have underlinings. The final 33 pages have been close trimmed at the foredge with loss to the odd letter at the end of a line of text. There is a small tear with loss to the first title page and to the corners of a couple of pages, but with no loss to the text. Overall the volume is in fair condition externally but good internally. Extremely scarce and important work. Overall Condition: Fair.

ROQUES, Pierre.
1685. 7, [1 blank], [12], 596, 70, [1], [1 blank] pp.First edition of the main work of Pierre Roques (1685-1748), French Protestant minister in Basel. It is a defence of a "true pietism", i.e. a rational and tolerant form of piety, against liberalism on the one hand and "enthusiasm" on the other. It was translated into German in 1748.The book is bound in vellum, with an embroidered double coat of arms mounted on the front board. The arms are of Eusèbe-Jacques Chaspoux, marquis de Verneuil (1695-1747) and his wife Louise Françoise Bigres (d. shortly after 1747), the marchioness de Verneuil. Chaspoux de Verneuil was a high-ranking courtier: "the doyen des sécretaires de la chambre du Roi et introducteur des ambassadeurs". His castle is in Verneuil-sur-Indre (Dept. Indre et Loire, arrond. Loches) and still exists. His coat of arms: a golden pelican with its two chicks on an azure field with three golden crescents on a red field; hers: a lion before a golden fence with three roosters on an azure field above.Restored tear in the portrait, but the book otherwise in very good condition. The embroidered arms has survived surprisingly well considering its position on the front board, but has a few loose threads and some damage to the arms.l J. van den Berg, "Le vray piétisme: Die aufgeklärte Frommigkeit des Basler Pfarrers Pierre Roques", in: Zwingliana 16/7 (1983), pp. 35-53; Olivier, Manuel de l'amateur de reliures armoriées françaises, pl. 2200. THORNTON, John, MORDEN, Robert & LEA, Philip
London, [c1685]. DescriptionFirst state. Double-page engraved map (450 by 550mm to the neatline, full margins showing the plate mark), with early hand-colour in outline (one or two pale stains). NotesIn May 1685 John Thornton, Robert Morden and Philip Lea advertised for sale a multi-sheet map entitled A New Map of the English Empire in the Continent of America. Although earlier multi-sheet maps of the Americas existed, namely the Augustine Herrman 1673[74], none survive that were of the entire English colonies in North America (Burden). The only known example of their advertised map is held in the Bibliothéque Nationale, Paris. The multi-sheet map was designed in such a manner that allowed for some of the sheets to be issued separately, as in the present example: This can be shown by the fact that the title runs in a narrow border along the top, so that when made up as a wall map it may be pasted or cut out. A main area of the debate is whether the map appears in an earlier state than that surviving today. It has been argued that the inset plan of New York harbor, and the scale and imprint cartouche below it, are later insertions, and that they do not appear on the state intended for the wall map. The author believes this is not the case as the scale is the only one on the finished wall map. The plan was inserted at a later stage of production merely because the information became available, and quite possibly because the Duke of York, the harbours proprietor, was the newly crowned King. It was clearly a late insertion as a sand bar on the main map has been altered to match … [Click Below for Full Description]

DESCARTES, Rene
"It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well." - René Descartes René Descartes was a 17th-century French philosopher whose theories and discoveries spawned an influx of commentary and responsive writings from western philosophers. He wrote numerous studies on a variety of topics including meteorology, physics, dioptrics, mechanics, and even music - all of which were collected in his work 'Discourse on the Method'. This 1685 Elzevier edition features the philosophical works of Descartes including 'Discourse on Method' This work, originally published 1637, was the first major work published during his lifetime and has long since been considered one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy. (Davis, Descartes Dream). In this work, Descartes discusses skepticism, logic, and physics and philosophical texts. In addition to 'Discourse', this collection includes 'Principles of Philosophy' - a work which establishes laws of nature, laws of physics, metaphysical meditations, and concepts of wisdom. In fact, Isaac Newton referenced Descartes' principles in his own 'Principia'. [Attributes: First Edition]
