LEEUWENHOEK, Antoni van.
Dobell 8 & pp. 192-196; Verkruijsse, Romeyn de Hooghe 1685.07 First edition in the original Dutch, of seven of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's early letters announcing and illustrating his recent discoveries of the microscopic wonders of nature, six never before published in any language and nearly all offering (sometimes literally!) seminal revelations. With a tear into one figure in one of the folding plates repaired, a tear along the plate edge of the engraved title-page and occasional marginal tears, but otherwise a good copy and with generous margins. FURETIERE (Antoine)
(Brunet, II, 1425. Tchemerzine-Scheler, III, 398). Bon exemplaire.

REDI, Francisco.
Amsterdam: Henricum Wetstenium. 1685-6. 12mo. 2 vols in 1. Contemporary calf boards newly rebacked in contemporary style, gilt lettering and rules to spine, marbled endpapers; pp. v. 1: [12], 216, [20], 40, [8] p. (last 2 blank), frontispiece and 41 leaves of plates (some folded); v. 2: [8], 312, [32] p., frontispiece and 10 plates (some folded), text illustrations; occasional spots, very good. First edition of this collection of several works by Francesco Redi (1626-1697), an Italian physician and poet. The first part, on insects, is important in that it refutes the generally accepted theory of spontaneous generation of flies from rotten meat. He performed a very early controlled experiment whch proved that only rotten meat that was visited by flies produced maggots, proving that maggots must emerge from eggs laid by flies. In so doing he laid claim to being the father of both experimental biology and parasitology. The second volume deals with flora and fauna more generally, including armadilloes and mermaids. His most important work here is on the venom of snakes; Redi worked out that venom was a distinct fluid delivered through the fangs, rather than a property of snake saliva and blood.

Goedartius, Johannes
London: Excudebat R.E. sumptibus S. Smith.. 1685 First edition with this title, with additions. . Modern quarter black morocco over marbled boards, gilt spine. . Octavo. With twenty-one fine engraved folding plates, displaying 150 examples of insects in various stages of their development and thirty-five examples of marine life. Separate title-page for the appendix. Top corner of title-page restored, a couple of tears in folding plates neatly repaired. A bit of soiling in text. Otherwise a very good, clean copy. Goedart (1617-1668) was born in Middelburg, Netherlands. He had very little formal education, but his interest in art, particularly watercolor, led him to careful, scientific observations of local and regional insect populations. Although he was not a classifier and believed that certain larvae were the product of spontaneous generation, he eventually became a respected authority in entomology. This his only book, originally entitled Metamorphosis Naturalis, was first published in two parts between 1662 and 1667, with a third part appearing posthumously. In it the author details his various experiments with insects, noting their developmental histories from larvae to adult and skillfully diagrams their appearance at significant stages. Martin Lister (1639-1712) edited this edition for the Royal Society, and supplied the appendix on marine life. (See D.S.B.)

Bl. Prgt. d. Zt. Vgl. Pfister I, 476. Lentner 3154.
*** ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT 17-th CENTURY TREATISES ON OBSTETRICS (A FINE COPY) *** Édition originale rare (comme ici) en bel état. REFERENCES: Garrison & Morton, 6148: "Portal's important treatise included his demonstration that version could be done with one foot. VIII, 472, (2) Seiten. Mit Liednoten und einer Titelvignette. 8 (18,5 x 11 cm). TAYLOR, J.B.
1685 F First Edition H Clark for John Taylor London. A very good copy in early 20th century 1/2 brown tan calf, new red leather title label, old marbled boards. Several of the gutters between gatherings have at some time in the mid 20th century been sellotaped with narrow tape in an attempt to strengthen the binding, leaving very narrow (3mm) tape stainsalong the inner margins, title page upper right corner chipped and strengthened, losing "ss" of "Happiness", otherwise an intact clean copy of a very scarce book. This pamphlet was written to reinforce the publics acceptance of James II as the rightful King and therefore best for England, despite being a Catholic. The worrying question to Jamess subjects was whether or not a Catholic dynasty was beginning.

WEIDENFELD JOHANNES SEIGERIUS.
AMBURGO, G. SCHULTZEN TYPIS NICOLAI SPIERINGII, 1685. "Weidenfeld tried to counteract the obscurity of hermetic writing by making public property of his own researches concerning the spirit of wine, in which the whole secret of the art was centered... his book is a collection of elements... divided into simples and compounds, and taken from various earlier writers" (Thorndike). Thorndike VIII, 394. Duveen 614. Ferguson II, 538 (edizione del 1768). Cfr. Ch.A. Becker, Das Aceton, der geheime Weingeist der Adepten, 1997.
