Dedicata (sotto l'incisione): All'Illustriss. & Eccell. Sig. Vettor Corrado, dignissimo Procurator di S. Marco. Firmata: Humiliss. Devotiss. & Obligatiss. Ser. Gio:Pietro Pittoni. Copper engraving, mm 286x452 (engraved area) on sheet mm 450x610, with watermark "tre mezze lune". Dedicated (under the engraving): All'Illustriss. & Eccell. Sig. Vettor Corrado, dignissimo Procurator di S. Marco. Signed: Humiliss. Devotiss. & Obligatiss. Ser. Gio:Pietro Pittoni. At bottom: Venuta ultimamente dal Campo sotto Buda in order to witness the reality of the described military scenes. It bear salso Leonardo Pittoni' address: Si vende In Venetia da Leonardo Pittoni al Ponte de' Beretteri sotto il Portico all'Insegna della Speranza. This very rare broadsheet illustrates Buda's siege in 1684 by the imperial troops after the defeat of the turcs in front of Vienna

Leaf From An Increase Mather Sermon

MA 1685 - Increase Mather (1639 - 1723) was a major figure in the early history of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was a Puritan minister who was involved with the government of the colony, the administration of Harvard College, and most notoriously, the Salem witch trials. He was the son of Richard Mather, and the father of Cotton Mather, both influential Puritan ministers. This leaf comes from the hand of the brother of Cotton Mather. Early American printed works, those printed before 1700, are quite rare; the printing was wretched, the paper rough, and the quality of the whole effort poor. In this leaf one can clearly see the struggling American colonies and their efforts to achieve scholorly and religious independence. Size: 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall

[16], 203 [1]; [12], 117 [1], [2]; [8], 102, [2] pp., half-title and 2 engraved plates (one folding) bound after title, blank 2V4, and final leaf listing the author's publications. Light browning, first gathering working loose and final 4 leaves softened and chipped at upper inner corner, first plate chipped at head. Contemporary sheep, rebacked (boards and extremities rubbed, corners scuffed). Provenance: Thomas Harrison of Queen's College, Cambridge (probably the Secretary of the Royal Institution who was an anti-slavery campaigner, 1771-1824), bookplate to front pastedown; The library of Hugh Selbourne (small ink stamp to half-title verso). ----Fulton 15; Wing B4000; (cf. PMM 143 for second ed.) - THIRD EDITION. "Boyle's New Experiments Physico-Mechanical... recounted experiments using a vacuum chamber or 'air pump' which he constructed with the assistance of Hooke. Rejecting the scholastic notion that nature could not tolerate a vacuum, he showed how it was perfectly possible to produce one, and this enabled him to illustrate the characteristics and functions of the air by studying the effects of its withdrawal on flame, light, and living creatures. He also argued that certain characteristics of the air could only be explained in terms of the ingenious hypothesis that it had a certain weight and 'spring'" (ODNB). This edition includes his controversial tracts against Linus and Hobbes, the former provoking an attack to which Boyle wrote a defence that contained 'Boyle's law', first published in the second edition. Very Good.

"Bidloo, professor of anatomy at The Hague, was at one time physician to William of Orange. An English contemporary, William Cowper, furnished his Anatomy of humane bodies almost completely with engravings plagiarized from this book by Bidloo, who promptly and publicly excoriated Cowper in a published communication to the Royal Society. Before the days of copyright, this is one of the most famous instances of plagiarism in the history of medicine...These plates are considered among the finest illustrations of the Baroque period,..." (Heirs of Hippocrates 667). "The value of Bidloo's 'Anatomia' lies chiefly in the 105 fine copperplate engravings drawn by Gerard de Lairesse, and engraved by Pieter van Gunst. These are masterpieces of Dutch baroque art" (Garrison-M). "One of the finest anatomical atlases of the Baroque period. The 105 plates were drawn by the painter Gerard de Lairesse, under whose influence the French style of Poussin and Lorraine became dominant in Holland. For Lairesse, the anatomical illustrations Bidloo asked him to undertake were an occasion for an artistic meditation on anatomy: he displayed his figures in an emotional, almost tender manner, contrasting the raw dissected parts with the full, soft surfaces of uncut flesh, placing flayed, bound figures in ordinary nightclothes or bedding, setting ordinary household objects such as books, jars or cabinets in the same scene as cut-up torsos or limbs, and in one plate showing a fly crawling on an opened abdomen. His illustrations brought the quality of Dutch still-life painting into anatomical illustration, and gave a new, darker spritual expression to the significance of the act of dissection. According to the most recent scholarship, the plates were probably engraved by Abraham Bloteling, inventor of the rocker tool for mezzoprint engraving." (Norman 231) "The book took six years to make, and it was not a best seller, even by 17th-century standards. The publisher probably sold the plates to try to recoup some of his losses. But today, the 100 copies still in existence are the prized treasures of the world's great academic libraries, among them Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale and Vassar" (Vassar College Libraries). *Wilhelm Gottlieb Tilesius von Tilenau (1769-1857) was a German naturalist, explorer, physician, draftsman and engraver.       Stockholm, Niclas Wankijff, 1685. 4:o. (4) s. Fuktrand och brunfärgat i överkant. Tagen ur band. Ett "L" med bläck på titelbladet. Libris-Id:2515197. Collijn sp, 235 (4 exemplar).

        Novae Archiepiscopatus Moguntini tabulae).

Person o.J. ca., Mainz: 1685 - Mainz: Person o.J., ca. 1685. Folio. 17 dpblgr. grenzkolor. Kupferstichkarten (je ca. 54 x 40 cm). Schlichter Lederbd. d. Zt. in mod. Leinenschuber (Vordergelenk oben eingerissen, innen minimal wasserrandig, sonst gut erhalten). Sehr seltener Regionalatlas. Karte ("Locorum Moeno Mogono pars media"), was in späteren Ausgaben korrigiert wurde. In: Lebendiges Rheinland-Pfalz 13/1976, S. 21-25. Die Karten im Einzelnen: 1. Kurfürstentum Mainz (Übersichtskarte); 2. Eichsfeld; 3. Erfurter Gebiet; 4. Amt Fritzlar; 5. Amt Naumburg/Hessen; 6. Gericht Katzenberg/Hessen; 7. Amt Neustadt/Hessen; 8. Amt Amöneburg/Hessen; 9. Spessart, 10. Amt Bischofsheim und Krautheim; 11. Amt Amorbach; 12. Allnfeld und Neydenau (Neckar/Jagst); 13 . Odenwald/Dieburg; 14. Taunus; 15. Odenwald/Bensheim; 16. Rheno Inferiori (Hunsrück/Nahe), 17. ohne Titel (Koblenz/Boppard/Mosel).

A treatise against drunkennesse: described in its nature, kindes effects and causes, especially that of drinking of healths. To which are added, two short sermons of S. Augustine's, De tempore. Faithfully translated, by Matthew Scrivener.

London: printed for Charles Brown, bookseller in Cambridge, 1685. 12mo., (12) + 175 + (3) + 177-193 + (3)pp., including the final errata leaf (this with short closed tear, no loss), contemporary calf gilt, neatly rebacked. A very good crisp copy. First edition: scarce. Wing S.2119. Wellcome V, p.75. Not in Osler. A fierce attack on the moral and social side of drunkenness, with an analysis of causes and consequences. '... It is as odious for a woman to be drunk once a year, as for a man once a week; and for a youth once a quarter, as for a man once a day. But how monstrous is their condition ... who shall make their shame their glory, imagining (according to their shallownesse) that it is masculine in women, and manly in children or striplings [to drink]'. The vice of drunkenness, claims the author, was 'an over-grown monster ... in this present age'. Matthew Scrivener (1622?-1688), a Church of England clergyman, probably born at Sibton in Suffolk, was educated at St. Catherine's College, Cambridge, and in 1666 became vicar of Haslingfield. He published several theological works. In his will he left a number of bequests to the poor and rather more substantial ones to his college.

        Monumenta Omnia Mathematica, quae extant

      - ?ex traditione?Francici Maurolici. Woodcut printer's device on title, numerous woodcut illus. in the text, & a woodcut vignette on verso of final leaf. Title printed in red & black. 4 p.l., 296 pp. Folio, cont. vellum over boards (first four leaves with some light browning & staining). Palermo: C. Hesperi, 1685. First edition of Maurolico's important edition of Archimedes' works, based upon an earlier partial edition by Borelli (Messina: 1670-72), which was almost completely lost. Maurolico's edition was largely prepared in 1534 and 1547-50 and remained in manuscript for many years after his death. Maurolico's "method of redaction is suggested in the preface. After enumerating and summarising Archimedes' works, Maurolico states that he has tried to make the works more easily intelligible by adding many lemmas, by demonstrating many things omitted by Archimedes, and by treating of the centres of gravity of solids?Maurolico does not hesitate to re-arrange Archimedes' master work, the De Sphaera et Cylindro, often substituting what he claims to be a better proof or enunciation for that of the original? It is, however, in the De Aequeponderantibus that Maurolico makes his most drastic re-arrangement of the Archimedean material and also his most important contributions to mathematics? "Maurolico organises the treatise (which he calls De Momentis Aequalibus) and his own additions into four books. The first deals with general principles relating to centres of gravity and equilibrium. The following three books concern the determination of centres of gravity in plane figures; paraboloids; and spheres, pyramids, prisms, conoids and other solids. Although Archimedes had apparently known how to find the centres of gravity in various solids, none of his proofs was extant in the sixteenth century. Maurolico sought to remedy this deficiency by applying the Archimedean method of moments to the problem. This he did with considerable success? "Although the long delay in publishing the Maurolico Archimedes precluded its entry to the mainstream of mathematical development, the importance of its author's studies was acknowledged by Federico Commandino."-Rose, The Italian Renaissance of Mathematics, p. 167. A very good and crisp copy. Preserved in a box. ? Riccardi, I, 43-44-(with a list of the contents). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Fehlpaginierung: S. 347 i.e. 346, S. 348 doppelt i.e. 347-348, S. 353-480 paginiert als 351-478.
