Bunyan, John; Albert Ebbo Crous (vert.)
12°: A-L 12 M 6, gepag.: 269 [3] pp. Titelpagina in houtsnede. Ooorspr. karton. L1839

Kino, Eusebio Francisco
San Bruno, Baja California, 1684. [1]p., with docketing on verso, approximately 10 x 7 3/4 inches. Previously folded sheet, slightly cropped at right edge. Very faint scattered foxing. Very good. A quite rare and early manuscript document signed by and in the hand of Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino, dating to his first year in Spanish America. Kino (1645-1711) began his career in Baja California in 1683, and went on to pioneer European settlement in what is now southern Arizona. His first mission was San Bruno in southern Baja California, which he founded in 1683. After eight months of complete isolation from European society, a relief ship finally arrived on Aug. 10, 1684, bearing another Jesuit missionary, Jean- Baptiste Copart, as well as supplies, letters, and twenty additional men. Five days later, Copart led Kino in his formal profession of faith, the vows which made him a true Jesuit. This document, written entirely in Latin, is written under Father Copart's authority by Kino, transcribing his vows, with his signature at bottom right. It discusses the Jesuit vows of poverty and obedience (pauperta and obedientia), and concludes "Sancti Brunonis Insularum Californiarum," with the date spelled out in Latin. It is docketed on verso: "Profes'n del P. Eusebio Fran'co Kino 1684." Any manuscript material by Father Kino is extremely rare on the market.

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF ALEXANDER EXQUEMELIN'S "BUCANIERS OF AMERICA" (1684), AN IMPORTANT SOURCE FOR HISTORIANS OF PIRACY AND A MAJOR INFLUENCE ON OVER THREE CENTURIES OF PIRATE FICTION. From Long John Silver, Captain Hook, and Captain Blood to the Dread Pirate Roberts and Jack Sparrow, pirates and piracy have had an outsized influence on the public imagination. And the plot, characters, settings, themes, costumes, and stage dressing used in the novels, plays, and movies that have created and fed that imagination are in large part derived, directly or indirectly, from the work offered here - a work that is also regarded by historians, although not uncritically, as an important sourcebook for the field now known as Atlantic history. Rafael Sabatini - the author of Captain Blood and The Black Swan - acknowledged his debt to Exquemelin; and George Macdonald Fraser (quoted above) listed Exquemelin as one of the influences for his great comic novel "The Pyrates." Although less scholarly or less diligent authors - as well as screenwriters and costume artists and set designers - may have received their doses of Exquemelin at second- or third-hand, it is indisputable that his influence strongly permeates the genre even today."The most vivid account of the activities of the buccaneers is contained in a remarkable book by Alexander Exquemelin entitled The Bucaniers of America... Londini; Impensis Richardi Chiswel, Ad Insigne Rosæ Coronatæ In Coemeterio Paulino, 1684. Original Full calf. 8vo. [14], 279 pages. 21 cm. First edition. In Latin. Published in London. An English translation was published in the same year, with the title: “Critical enquiries into the various editions of the Bible printed in divers places and at several times: together with Animadversions upon a small treatise of Dr. Isaac Vossius concerning the Oracles of the sibylls, and an answer to the objections of the late Critica sacra”. Isaac Vossius (1618-1689) was a biblical scholar, friend and translator of Manasseh ben Israel. Richard Simon, “French scholar and Orientalist; born at Dieppe May 13, 1638; died there April 21, 1721. After studying at the Sorbonne he joined the Congregation of the Oratory, in the library of which he studied Oriental works and manuscripts. When a certain Jew was condemned to the pyre at Metz on a blood accusation, Simon wrote a strong opinion in protest (1670) . He translated Leon of Modena's ‘Historia dei Riti Ebraici, ' etc. (1674) , and wrote ‘Comparaison des Cérémonies des Juifs et de la Discipline de l'Eglise' (1681) . His chief work, however, was his ‘Histoire Critique du Vieux Testament' (1678) , practically the first introduction to the Old Testament written. It dealt with the books of the Old Testament as if they were ordinary writings, and by this means aroused the enmity of Bossuet and the Port Royal, through whose influence the whole edition of 1, 300 copies was seized and destroyed and Simon was expelled from the Oratory (May 21, 1678) . LEIBNIZ, Gottfried Wilhelm.
Leipzig: Christopher Günther for J. Gross & J. F. Gleditsch, 1684. First edition of Leibniz's invention of the differential calculus. "His epoch-making papers give rules of calculation without proof for rates of variation of functions and for drawing tangents to curves ... With the calculus a new era began in mathematics, and the development of mathematical physics since the seventeenth century would not have been possible without the aid of this powerful technique" (PMM). "Leibniz's first paper on the differential calculus, published nine years after he had independently discovered it. Although Newton had probably discovered the calculus earlier than Leibniz, Leibniz was the first to publish his method, which employed a notation superior to that used by Newton. The priority dispute between Newton and Leibniz over the calculus is one of the most famous controversies in the history of science; it led to a breach between English and Continental mathematics that was not healed until the nineteenth century" (Norman). "The invention of the Leibnizian infinitesimal calculus dates from the years between 1672 and 1676, when Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) resided in Paris on a diplomatic mission. In February 1667 he received the doctor's degree by the Faculty of Jurisprudence of the University of Altdorf and from 1668 was in the service of the Court of the chancellor Johann Philipp von Schönborn in Mainz. BUTLER, Samuel
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Loyalty is still the same, whether it win or lose the game; true as a dial to the sun, although it be not shined upon." ― Samuel Butler, Hudibras Samuel Butler, a 17th-century satirist, is mostly remembered only for his work 'Hudibras' which satirizes religious sects, such as Puritans and Presbyterians, during the English Civil War. It became an instant success and was popular throughout Great Britain, but perhaps its most notable publication came through the political satire artwork of William Hogarth. Voltaire thought highly of Butler's 'Hudibras' "There is one English poem, the title whereof is 'Hudibras'; it is 'Don Quixote' - it is our Satyre Menippee blended together: I never met with so much wit in one single book as in this." (Lowndes 335) The different parts of this issue were published separately in 1684, beginning with parts 1 & 2 and then part 3 was reissued later with a separate general title page. POOLE, Matthew
1684. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Matthew Poole was a 17th-century English nonconformist known for his anti-Catholic propaganda. While his Bible commentaries and annotations were his most popular works, he also wrote an examination of the Catholic Church, defining and describing many of the problems with their doctrine. Frequently, Poole sought to demonstrate the superiority of Protestantism of Catholicism, and this was most evident in his work 'Synopsis Criticorum' in which he summarizes the views of bible critics and commentators. Curiously though, Poole did not include reviews on John Calvin or Martin Luther - perhaps not looking to be critical of their views. [Attributes: First Edition]

JOSEPHUS, Flavius.
V. Eeghen & V.d. Kellen 396 (first work only); Klaversma & Hannema 132 & 747. First Dutch edition of all the works on Jewish history by the famous classical Jewish historian Flavius Josephus. They were translated from the latest critical French edition by Arnauld d'Andilly. Though this volume was intended to stand on its own, the French Protestant minister Jacob Basnage, who had moved to the Netherlands in 1684 in anticipation of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, decided to publish the present continuation, carrying the history on to his own time, which grew larger. The present edition is the first complete (in fact the first extensive) Dutch edition, in folio format designed to match the 1706 Dutch edition of Flavius Josephus. The two works therefore form a coherent whole. The illustrations in the first work include 127 designed and engraved by the celebrated Dutch artist Jan Luyken, 99 specially made for the present edition and the others first used in Mortier's Bible, published a year before. Especially in the homes of the strict Calvinists, works on Jewish history were very popular and much read and studied. With occasional leaves in the second work foxed or browned, but otherwise in very good condition.

First and only Latin edition (translated by Matthias Honcamp) of a truly unique emblematic and philosophical work, originally published in Italian in 1684 as L'uomo e sue parti, figurato e simbolico, with 42 engraved emblems revolving around the human body and body parts. It describes and depicts the human body in its details and in its entirety in every aspect conceivable. The book also discusses magic, in the strict sense of the word, revealing many marvellous secrets, such as the occult properties of saliva, urine, sperm, etc."The erudition demonstrated by the author is really quite extraordinary" (Raybould) including metoposcopy (the interpretation of facial wrinkles for divination!). An appendix adds short accounts of several subjects, including "hieroglyphia" and "androgyni", along with short works by other authors: Lactantius Firmianus's "De opificio Dei", Coelius Rhodiginus on humanity, and a long "Ode" to humanity: "Considerationes patheticae de creatione, & dignitate hominis" based on Trismegistus, Plato, Coelius and other ancient sources. With a faint marginal water stain and a couple small rust spots in the paper, but otherwise in fine condition. The binding shows a few scratches, cuts and stains, small cracks at the head and foot of the hinges and 1 sewing support broken at the hinge, but is still in good condition. A fascinating emblem book for both text and imagery (some of it now also humorous), and an impressive piece of book production.
