ARISTOTLE [pseud]
Printed for J. Wright and R. Chiswell, 1684. some minor spotting and staining, first and last leaves along with the endpapers a little grubby with corners turned, pp. [144], small 8vo, original blind ruled dark sheep, some wear, lower outer corner of upper cover at some time bent back, but the skin is intact, good. 'The Problems of Aristotle' first appeared in English in 1585, this being a translation of the Latin text, edited by Poliziano, published in London in 1583. Thereafter it was frequently reprinted, but early editions are understandably rare. This is not of course a work of Aristotle's, although it bears a closer relation to the Stagyrite than the patently pseudonymous author of the 'Master-Piece' (although sexual matters do feature here), since it actually quotes from genuine works of Aristotle, as well as other Classical authors, and others more modern (e.g. Albertus Magnus). The 'other Philosophers and Physicians' are Marcantonio Zimara and Alexander Aphrodisias. ESTC records 3 copies in the UK (BL x 2, Bodley), and 5 in the US: that at Yale is imperfect. (ESTC R37292)

Homann Heirs
Asia AsiaA decorative map prepared by Prof. Johann Matthias Haas (1684-1742), who produced a number of continental and regional maps for the atlases issued by the firm of Homann Heirs in 1744. Kamchatka has been reduced to its proper size vis à vis Johann Christoph's version, while Siberia is drawn with an outline familiar to us today. The coastal waters of Japan remain a little haphazard with Hokkaido -Terra Efo, Yedso ou Yesfo- still attached to the mainland, but Sakhalin Island (Sagalien) is clearly marked. The Malay Peninsula has a very poor outline compared to earlier maps by Homann. Johor (Iohor) is located on the north-east coastline (somewhere in the vicinity of present day Kota Bahru). Tibet, which is named, bears the alternative title of "Dalai Lammae". Original handcolouring. Size: 47,6 x 55,3 cm. Price: Euro625,- (excl. VAT/BTW).

BUNYAN, JOHN
London: Printed by B.W. for Benj. Alsop, 1684. FIRST EDITION. This is an extraordinarily rare copy of the first printing of a guide to a Christian life by a writer Day describes as "a voice of a proletarian . . . in an era when literature was deemed the prerogative of the aristocracy." A largely self-educated nonconformist preacher, John Bunyan (1628-88) was nonetheless a giant in the history of English literature; his "Pilgrim's Progress" is one of the most influential works of 17th century prose. According to Day, "At the Restoration he was a center of nonconformist resistance to Stuart oppression, and preferred jail to relinquishing his spiritual principles." He spent more than 12 years in prison studying and writing (he published 43 works in his lifetime). In the present book, he warns Christians against the hypocrisy of living iniquitously while professing their religion; faith might be the path to salvation, but it did not exempt one from living according to God's principles. Bunyan famously condemned liturgy and ritual, denouncing the Book of Common Prayer, so one wonders how he would have felt about our previous owner, John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, whose greatest literary project was an English translation of a pre-Reformation breviary, and whose conversion to Catholicism caused a sensation. Besides being a translator of note, Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute (1847-1900), was a tremendously wealthy philanthropist, bibliophile, and patron of architecture. It was no doubt he who had our volume bound by Francis Bedford (1799-1883), the leading binder in the fashi … [Click Below for Full Description]

He became a barber-surgeon, and arrived in Tortuga in 1666, working for an agent of the Compagne des Indes. Exquemelin soon left to accompany several pirate expeditions, including those of the notorious Welsh buccaneer Henry Morgan. By 1674 Exquemelin had joined the Dutch Navy, serving with De Ruyter's fleet in the wars against the French. Following the Admiral's death in 1667 he was granted citizenship in Amsterdam, where his manuscript was translated into Dutch and edited by the publisher Jan ten Hoorn, and published in 1678 as ‘De Americaensche Zee-Roovers'. Exquemelin went to the West Indies in 1681 and practiced as a surgeon in San Domingo, but was soon drawn back to the sea and joined an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Artist: Chatelain Henri Abraham ( - 1743 ) Amsterdam; issued in: Paris; date: ca 1720. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: ; - size (in cm): ; - description : Detailed world map in two hemispheres with the ships routs of the explorers and description of the continents. Australia and New Zeelland not yet completely explored.; - vita of the artist: Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684 - 1743) was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He lived consecutively in Paris, St. Martins, London (c. 1710), The Hague (c. 1721) and Amsterdam (c. 1728). He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720. Innovative for its time, the Atlas Historique combined fine engraving and artwork with scholarly studies of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography. Some scholarship suggests that the Atlas Historique was not exclusively compiled by Henri Chatelain, as is commonly believed, but rather was a family enterprise involving Henri, his father Zacharie and his brother, also Zacharie.

*** [Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. SHAKUHACHI FLUTE
1684. One full-page woodcut illus. & music printing. 16 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover (rubbed), new stitching. [Japan]: ca. 1684-1704.First edition and, apparently, unique; no copy is located in WorldCat or Union Catalogue of Japanese Books. The miyogiri is a type of shakuhachi, an end-blown three-node bamboo flute with five finger holes. The various types of shakuhachi flutes have been some of Japan's most popular instruments. They were brought from China in the 8th century and became popular in 17th-century Japan when they were adopted by itinerant Buddhist beggar priests (komuso) of the Fuke sect, who were employed by the ruling warrior class. This rare and comprehensive work begins with a table of contents and a physical description of the miyogiri, along with instructions on correct embouchure. The next section is concerned with fingering techniques, which are illustrated in two diagrams on two pages. This is followed by a wonderful full-page woodcut illustration of a Zen monk wearing a kara (religious attire) giving instruction to a samurai and a younger man.Following this are nine pieces of song music for the miyogiri, written in a stylized version of katakana in vertical columns from right to left. Indications of blowing intensity and length of phrase are also included in the notation, as is the text of the songs. The Fuke sect left a repertoire of between 200 and 300 pieces, but most were lost with the forced dissolution of the sect in 1871. Our work provides a valuable record, giving the scores and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Willis, Dr. Thomas, 1621-1675
London: Printed By H[enry] Clark, for T[homas] Drink, C[harles}, Harper and J[ohn] Leigh, 1684. Quarto. [8], [26], 152 pages. Willis was primarily interested in chemistry and its application to medicine. He began considering the chemical aspects of this subject as early as 1656. His work was published first in Latin and then posthumously in English in 1681. This copy appeared in 1684. ESTC R186615 records a copy in the U of Penn, Van Pelt-Dietrich in the US, 2 copies in the UK. The only copy in the U.S. which is at the U of Penn lacks the 26 pages entitled The Table [A Table of all the hard words derived from the Greek and Latin...] The UK versions apparently have them placed at the end of the volume instead of with the preliminaries. Willis is thought to be the earliest with the suggestion that fermentation taking place within the intestines and it is related to purification. As a master of clinical observation, the author became a pioneer on the analysis of diseases and small anatomical details not previously noted. Very rare in remarkably nice condition with some toning or finger soiling to title page, bound in a more modern (19th century?) 1/4 brown calf over marbled paper covered boards, red morocco spine label gilt, some staining to last 6 pages but quite readable, one early contemporary note to outer margin of page 65, a little separation after title page but not broken through binding, lacks one front and rear initial endpapers, from the library of Otto Orren Fisher (1881-1961) A physician whose collection of rare medical books were sold at a Swann auction in 2007.

Hédelin, François, Abbé d'Aubignac
London: Printed for the Author, and sold by William Cadman, et al, 1684. First English edition. [viii], 135, [1], 176 pp. 4to. The Classical Treatise of the 17th-Century French Drama. First English translation of this key treatise which codified the rules of 17th-century French dramatic classicism. It was first published in French as La pratique du théatre in 1657. Congreve owned copies of both the first French and first English editions. Hédelin (1604-1676) was a cleric and author; he enjoyed the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu and began writing his treatise in 1640 under the Cardinal's urging. In his own plays, Hédelin attempted to demonstrate his conservative theories of drama. His friendship with Corneille was broken off in part because of the latter's inconsistent methods and adherence to the classical dramatic models that Hédelin espoused. ESTC R16044; Wing A4185. Provenance: Spencer Compton, 8th Duke of Devonshire (1833-1908, bookplate, shelfmark). Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, spine in 6 compartments with raised bands, preserving original black morocco spine panels richly gilt in 4 compartments, with red morocco spine labels to style in the other 2. v.p. [chiefly Strasbourg]: 1637-1684. 1 vols. 4to. A collection of 26 medical dissertations, mostly published in Strasbourg, 1637-1684, related to various topics including, dysentery, gunshot wounds, the plague, kidney stones, psychological ailments, sleeplessness, surgery on tumors, tooth rot and other maladies. The book includes a manuscript index note at the beginning of the volume and each pamphlet is numbered in manuscript. Most of the titles are quite rare, OCLC showing 3-5 institutions as holding the individual titles. The variety of topics suggests that a physician documenting current research or academic activity in medical studies in Strasbourg compiled the volume. The unique French title in the collection closes the volume and discusses the use of the earliest eau de toilette, L'eau de la Reine de Hongrie, as an antiseptic tonic for the plague. The following is a list of the titles herein: STURMIO, S. Discursus medicus de medicis non medicis in salutem periclitantis proximi. Wittenberg, 1663. [16], 42 pp. LOMBARDIUS, C. - Chez François Muguet, à Paris 1684, in-4 (18,5x25cm), xxviij ; 305pp. (20) 388pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

George Jeffreys
Benjamin Tooke. Condition: Good. Sir Samuel Barnardiston was an English Whig Member of Parliament and deputy governor of the East India Company, defendant in some high-profile legal cases and involved in a highly contentious parliamentary election. Barnardiston was summoned to trial on the 28 February 1684 for libel, accused of 'being of a factious, seditious, and disaffected temper,' and having 'caused several letters to be written and published' that reflected badly on the king and officers of state. Indeed, two of the four letters that formed the basis of the charge were privately addressed to a Suffolk friend, Sir Philip Skippon, and the others to a linendraper of Ipswich and to a gentleman of Brightwell, with both of whom Sir Samuel was intimate. They contained sentences favouring William Russell, Lord Russell and Algernon Sydney, and stating that 'the papists and high tories are quite down in the mouth,' and that 'Sir George [Jeffreys] is grown very humble;' and on these words the accusation was founded. The trial was tried by George Jeffreys, unfortunately nicknamed as "The Hanging Judge", who became notable during the reign of King James II for avidly enforcing royal policy, resulting in a historical reputation for severity and bias. Jeffreys had a personal concern in the matter and directed the jury to return a verdict of guilty on the ground that the act of sending the letters was itself seditious. An arrest of judgment was moved for, a fine of £10,000 was imposed. However Barnardiston resisted payment, and was imprisoned until June 1688, when he paid £6,000, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

George Jeffreys
London: Benjamin Tooke. However Barnardiston resisted payment, and was imprisoned until June 1688, when he paid £6,000, and was relea … [Click Below for Full Description]

HEIDEGGER, Johann Heinrich; Francesco Guicciardini (editor)
Amsterdam: printed by Heinricum Wetstenium, 1684. HISTORIA PAPATUS. Novissimo Historiae Lutheranismi & Calvinismi fabro kata biaion reposita. Qua Ecclesiae Romanae, septem Periodis distinctae, origo & progressus, ad nostra usque tempora, pertexitur. HEIDEGGER, Johann Heinrich First Edition Amsterdam: Printed by Heinricum Wetstenium, 1684. 4to (8.1", 20.6 cm). [28], 598 40 [20] pp. Latin. First edition: The preeminent Swiss theologian of his time (not the 20th-century philosopher), Heidegger (1633-1698) was a professor of Hebrew, philosophy, dogmatics and ecclesiastical history, moral philosophy, and theology. This is a chief example of his influential writings, which were largely leveled against the Roman Catholic Church; though not antagonistic, all his works were on the list of forbidden books. The Protestant Reformation sought to end church injustices and hierarchies and sought secular religion, priests relieved of celibacy, and dismissed opulence. Post-reformation, Heidegger sought to unify the Swiss Reformed churches, still organized as separate entities. Also, the Age of Enlightenment of the 17th century characterized by the scientific revolution, philosophers circulating their ideas, and printed works served to undermine the authority of the monarchy and the church. Encyclopaedia Britannica. British Library online. CERL online. Heritage Auctions catalogue of 2015. Catalogue of the Library of the Late William R. Williams, STD, LLD. of 1896, Part II, Item no. 686. Morrey, Humphrey?, [c. 1650-1716]
1684. narrow octavo, 63 manuscript pages plus blanks, bound in a contemporary vellum wallet style binding of presumably English manufacture, with original brass clasp, vellum is tooled with blind rules, vellum worn, and somewhat soiled, old tear to wallet flap with early sewn repair, some foxing to paper, entries in ink in a 17th century hand. Exceptionally rare 17th century manuscript account book very likely kept by an early Philadelphia Quaker merchant, likely Humphrey Morrey, the entries begin soon after Morrey's arrival in the new city of Philadelphia in 1684. The entries begin three years after the colony of Pennsylvania was chartered in 1681, and two years after the arrival of William Penn in 1682. The entries document goods sold and imported, personal and business expenses, including detailed entries for the construction of a "compting house" and other structures. There are entries for repairs to "Chesnut warf" Humphrey Morrey owned the lot and wharf at Front and Chestnut streets. The account book contains one of the earliest Lenni Lenape vocabularies, a glossary of words used in trading. Quaker historian, Edwin B. Bronner states: "References to economic life in Pennsylvania in this period [1690s] are rare and generally refer to the development of some new type of business venture or to the commerce which flowed in and out of Philadelphia."1 According to Blackwell's Rent Roll of 1689 there were only eight "merchants" in Philadelphia at that time, Morrey was one of them. Many of the entries deal with the sale of Canary wine, Madeira, claret and "syder royall", by the … [Click Below for Full Description]
