Rome: Ex Typographia Varesij, 1684. BONANNI, Filippo (1638-1725). Recreatio mentis et oculi in observatione animalium testaceorum. Rome: Ex Typographia Varesij, 1684. 4to., (8 6/8 x 6 1/8 inches). Additional engraved allegorical title-page, 3 sectional title-pages, and 132 engraved plates illustrated 532 specimens (the top margins of N2, N3 and O3 restored at an early date). Contemporary limp vellum with yapp fore-edges, the author and title in manuscript on the spine, remains of two pairs of leather ties (a little bit rumpled, and one or two stains). Provenance: with the 19th-century inscription of the Societas Mariae Vicente Codina Vidal, of Xativa in Spain on a blank between the engraved title-page and the letterpress title-page First Latin edition, first published in Rome in 1681 as Ricreatione dell' occhio e della mente nell' osservation' delle chiocciole, and an attractive example of the FIRST MONOGRAPH ON SHELLS, enlarged by the addition of a further one hundred shells. Bonanni was a Jesuit and student of the celebrated Athanasius Kircher, and upon his death succeeded him as curator of the cabinet of curiosities at the Collegio Romano, publishing the catalogue of their collections as the Musaeum Kircherianum, Rome, 1709. The Collegio Romano clearly provided the specimens for many of the engraved figures in this astonishing work, which caused Buonanni to be considered, along with Lister and Rumpf, one of the founding fathers of conchology. Bonanni supported the theory of spontaneous generation basing his position on the scientific practice of using microscopes, and th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nieremberg, Juan Eusebio (Text by); Gaspar Bouttats (Engravings by)
Amberes (Antwerp): Geronymo Verdussen, 1684. New edition, revised. Hardcover. f to vg. Small octavo (7 1/2 x 4 3/4"). [18], 655, [77]pp. Contemporary full vellum, with later title label to spine. Additional engraved title by Gaspar Bouttats. Originally published in 1640, "De la diferencia entre lo temporal, y eterno" is one of the author's most ascetic and most successful works, with a total of 60 editions in various translations. The book, written in admirable prose, inspired Jacindo Verdaguer for his "L'Atlàntida."In this book, Father Juan Eusebio Nieremberg (1595-1658), a Jesuit priest, theologian and mystic, states that Man was created by God to praise Him, make Him reverence and serve Him, and thereby save his soul; and the other things on the face of the earth are created for man, and to help him in the pursuit of the purpose for which he was created. Hence it follows that man must use things as much as they help him to his purpose, and so much he must remove them as they prevent him from doing it. Therefore, this "difference" between the temporal and the eternal is related to the purpose of man's life.Nieremberg intends in this work that the reader internalizes this "difference" in a vital and existential way, deepening the thought of eternal life, whether in heaven or in hell. The "things on the face of the earth", the temporal, are means that must be "used" to reach the purpose, or happy eternity with God, the Creator. This work is splendidly illustrated throughout with 10 full-page engravings (including frontispiece), by Gaspar Bouttats (c. 1640-1695 or … [Click Below for Full Description]

More, Thomas
Very good (please see full item description for details). More, Thomas. Utopia, Written in Latin by Sir Thomas More, Chancellor of England; Translated into English. London: Richard Chiswell, 1684. First edition of this translation, by Gilbert Burnet (1643-1714; Scottish philosopher, historian, and Bishop of Salisbury). 8vo, [22], 206, with original rear blank (P4); front blank (A1) appears to have been replaced. Early (possibly original) boards, rebacked with recent new leather spine with red label, new endpapers. Mild browning to edges of title page, which bears and early ownership signature (Henry Thomson), else very clean. Burnet's translation is generally regarded as preferable to the first English translation, done by Ralph Robinson in 1551. Pforzheimer (742) notes that this translation "is in some respects much superior and certainly represents a more readable text except to those who enjoy the Tudor vigor of Robinson's version." ESTC R7176; Wing M2961; Sabin 50546. First published in Latin in 1516, More's highly influential work is a socio-political commentary presented through an account of the government and customs of a fictional island called Utopia (literally meaning no place). As explained in Printing and the Mind of Man (47) "Utopia is not, as often imagined, More's ideal state; it exemplifies only the virtues of wisdom, fortitude, temperance, and justice. It reflects the moral poverty of the states which More knew, whose Christian rulers should possess also the Christian virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity." Kulturgeschichte. - Theologie. - Barclay, Robert.
1684. Erste deutsche Auflage. 21,5 x 18,5 cm. XVI Blatt, 450 Seiten, 12 Blatt. Blindgeprägter Ganzledereinband der Zeit. Bestoßen und berieben, unteres und oberes Kapitel leicht beschädigt. Innengelenk leicht gelockert, insgesamt von sehr guter Erhaltung. Kleiner Stempel auf Vortitel. Robert Barclay (* 23. Dezember 1648 in Gordonstown, Morayshire; † 3. POOLE, Matthew
1684 Famed Bible Commentary of English Matthew Poole England Synopsis Criticorum Matthew Poole was a 17th-century English nonconformist known for his anti-Catholic propaganda. While his Bible commentaries and annotations were his most popular works, he also wrote an examination of the Catholic Church, defining and describing many of the problems with their doctrine. Frequently, Poole sought to demonstrate the superiority of Protestantism of Catholicism, and this was most evident in his work ‘Synopsis Criticorum’ in which he summarizes the views of bible critics and commentators. Curiously though, Poole did not include reviews on John Calvin or Martin Luther – perhaps not looking to be critical of their views. VISSCHER II, NICOLAES
Prijs: Euro650,- ? ?.

ARISTOTLE [pseud]
Printed for J. Wright and R. Chiswell, 1684. some minor spotting and staining, first and last leaves along with the endpapers a little grubby with corners turned, pp. [144], small 8vo, original blind ruled dark sheep, some wear, lower outer corner of upper cover at some time bent back, but the skin is intact, good. 'The Problems of Aristotle' first appeared in English in 1585, this being a translation of the Latin text, edited by Poliziano, published in London in 1583. Thereafter it was frequently reprinted, but early editions are understandably rare. This is not of course a work of Aristotle's, although it bears a closer relation to the Stagyrite than the patently pseudonymous author of the 'Master-Piece' (although sexual matters do feature here), since it actually quotes from genuine works of Aristotle, as well as other Classical authors, and others more modern (e.g. Albertus Magnus). The 'other Philosophers and Physicians' are Marcantonio Zimara and Alexander Aphrodisias. ESTC records 3 copies in the UK (BL x 2, Bodley), and 5 in the US: that at Yale is imperfect. (ESTC R37292)

Homann Heirs
Asia AsiaA decorative map prepared by Prof. Johann Matthias Haas (1684-1742), who produced a number of continental and regional maps for the atlases issued by the firm of Homann Heirs in 1744. Kamchatka has been reduced to its proper size vis à vis Johann Christoph's version, while Siberia is drawn with an outline familiar to us today. The coastal waters of Japan remain a little haphazard with Hokkaido -Terra Efo, Yedso ou Yesfo- still attached to the mainland, but Sakhalin Island (Sagalien) is clearly marked. The Malay Peninsula has a very poor outline compared to earlier maps by Homann. Johor (Iohor) is located on the north-east coastline (somewhere in the vicinity of present day Kota Bahru). Tibet, which is named, bears the alternative title of "Dalai Lammae". Original handcolouring. Size: 47,6 x 55,3 cm. Price: Euro625,- (excl. VAT/BTW).

BUNYAN, JOHN
London: Printed by B.W. for Benj. Alsop, 1684. FIRST EDITION. This is an extraordinarily rare copy of the first printing of a guide to a Christian life by a writer Day describes as "a voice of a proletarian . . . in an era when literature was deemed the prerogative of the aristocracy." A largely self-educated nonconformist preacher, John Bunyan (1628-88) was nonetheless a giant in the history of English literature; his "Pilgrim's Progress" is one of the most influential works of 17th century prose. According to Day, "At the Restoration he was a center of nonconformist resistance to Stuart oppression, and preferred jail to relinquishing his spiritual principles." He spent more than 12 years in prison studying and writing (he published 43 works in his lifetime). In the present book, he warns Christians against the hypocrisy of living iniquitously while professing their religion; faith might be the path to salvation, but it did not exempt one from living according to God's principles. Bunyan famously condemned liturgy and ritual, denouncing the Book of Common Prayer, so one wonders how he would have felt about our previous owner, John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, whose greatest literary project was an English translation of a pre-Reformation breviary, and whose conversion to Catholicism caused a sensation. Besides being a translator of note, Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute (1847-1900), was a tremendously wealthy philanthropist, bibliophile, and patron of architecture. It was no doubt he who had our volume bound by Francis Bedford (1799-1883), the leading binder in the fashi … [Click Below for Full Description]

He became a barber-surgeon, and arrived in Tortuga in 1666, working for an agent of the Compagne des Indes. Exquemelin soon left to accompany several pirate expeditions, including those of the notorious Welsh buccaneer Henry Morgan. By 1674 Exquemelin had joined the Dutch Navy, serving with De Ruyter's fleet in the wars against the French. Following the Admiral's death in 1667 he was granted citizenship in Amsterdam, where his manuscript was translated into Dutch and edited by the publisher Jan ten Hoorn, and published in 1678 as ‘De Americaensche Zee-Roovers'. Australia and New Zeelland not yet completely explored.; - vita of the artist: Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684 - 1743) was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He lived consecutively in Paris, St. Martins, London (c. 1710), The Hague (c. 1721) and Amsterdam (c. 1728). He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720. Innovative for its time, the Atlas Historique combined fine engraving and artwork with scholarly studies of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography. Some scholarship suggests that the Atlas Historique was not exclusively compiled by Henri Chatelain, as is commonly believed, but rather was a family enterprise involving Henri, his father Zacharie and his brother, also Zacharie.

A largely self-educated nonconformist preacher, John Bunyan (1628-88) was nonetheless a giant in the history of English literature; his "Pilgrim's Progress" is one of the most influential works of 17th century prose.

The present map indicates the areas that are covered by any of the single sheets of the large folding map. … [Click Below for Full Description]

*** [Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
