LEIBNIZ, Gottfried Wilhelm
Christopher Günther for J. Gross & J. F. Gleditsch, Leipzig, 1684. First edition of Leibniz's invention of the differential calculus. "Leibniz was an almost universal genius whose place in the history of mathematics depends on his being an independent inventor of the infinitesimal calculus and on his contributions to combinatorial analysis which foreshadowed the development of modern mathematical analysis . The Acta Eruditorum was established in imitation of the French Journal des Sçavans in Berlin in 1682 and Leibniz was a frequent contributor. Another German mathematician (E.W. Tschirnhausen), having published in it his paper on quadratures, based on researches that Leibniz had communicated to him, Leibniz at last decided in 1684 to present to the world the more abstruse parts of his own work on the calculus. His epoch-making papers give rules of calculation without proof for rates of variation of functions and for drawing tangents to curves . The infinitesimal calculus originated in the 17th century with the researches of Kepler, Cavalieri, Torrecelli, Fermat and Barrow, but the two independent inventors of the subject, as we understand it today, were Newton and Leibniz . Although both Newton and Leibniz developed similar ideas, Leibniz devised a superior symbolism and his notation is now an essential feature in all presentation of the subject . With the calculus a new era began in mathematics, and the development of mathematical physics since the 17th century would not have been possible without the aid of this powerful technique" (PMM). Leibniz "applied his new method … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, Richard Chiswell, 1684. First Thus. First Impression. Hardback. First edition translated by Gilbert Burnet (often quoted as preferable to Ralph Robinson's). One of the most important taproot texts for modern speculative fiction and a milestone in the genre's history. A lovely recent binding, marred by loss from every leaf that has been expertly repaired but still pretty obvious. A little spotted. A rare edition. Pagination: [24], 206. First leaf is a blank, followed by the title page and then the prologue. Our previous copy had to blanks before the title page, though the collation on this copy seems correct. Utopia is one of the most important works to have influenced the field of speculative fiction. In the 500 years since its publication, there have been hundreds of imitators, and the field would be a very different landscape without it. [6441, Hyraxia Books]. All items will be packed in bubble-wrap and either a cardboard book-wrap or a box where appropriate. Items over £200 will be shipped fully tracked, insured and will require a signature. [Pennsylvania]: [Penn, William]
[N.p., but likely Pennsylvania, 1684. 367pp. Folio. Remnants of cloth spine, still holding well by cords. Boards no longer present, but marbled endpapers (chipped) remain. A handful of leaves with minor chips or repairs at the fore-edge or corner, costing little text. Good. In a modern quarter morocco box, spine gilt. A significant early copy book recording the sale of land in an area of Pennsylvania known in the 17th and 18th centuries as the "Welch Tract." This tract covered approximately the area now comprised of the towns of Radnor, Haverford, Merion, Ardmore, and Broomall. The volume contains hundreds of indentures granted by various agents of William Penn to numerous families and individuals both in Wales and in the Province of Pennsylvania. On March 4, 1681, Charles II of England granted William Penn a proprietary charter over land extending west from the Delaware River and bounded by New York to the north and Maryland to the south. Penn was granted sweeping power over the territory including the rights to create and fill offices, make laws as he saw fit (provided they were not contradictory to any established laws of England), and to establish counties, towns and seaports. Once the charter was signed, Penn hastened to find settlers for the new colony. He offered one hundred 5,000-acre tracts at the price of one hundred pounds each, as well as several smaller tracts. Seven of the 5,000-acre tracts were sold almost immediately to Penn's Quaker acquaintances in Wales. Seven individuals purchased 30,000 acres of land to the northwest of Philadelphia and proceede … [Click Below for Full Description]

LE CÈNE, CHARLES:
Amsterdam: Chez Henry Desbordes. 1684. 7 Blatt, 367 Seiten. Barclay, Robert.
1684. Innengelenk leicht gelockert, insgesamt von sehr guter Erhaltung. Kleiner Stempel auf Vortitel. Robert Barclay (* 23. Dezember 1648 in Gordonstown, Morayshire; † 3. [Click Below for Full Description]

More, Thomas
1684. Very good (please see full item description for details). More, Thomas. Utopia, Written in Latin by Sir Thomas More, Chancellor of England; Translated into English. London: Richard Chiswell, 1684. First edition of this translation, by Gilbert Burnet (1643-1714; Scottish philosopher, historian, and Bishop of Salisbury). 8vo, [22], 206, with original rear blank (P4); front blank (A1) appears to have been replaced. Early (possibly original) boards, rebacked with recent new leather spine with red label, new endpapers. Mild browning to edges of title page, which bears and early ownership signature (Henry Thomson), else very clean. Burnet's translation is generally regarded as preferable to the first English translation, done by Ralph Robinson in 1551. Pforzheimer (742) notes that this translation "is in some respects much superior and certainly represents a more readable text except to those who enjoy the Tudor vigor of Robinson's version." ESTC R7176; Wing M2961; Sabin 50546. First published in Latin in 1516, More's highly influential work is a socio-political commentary presented through an account of the government and customs of a fictional island called Utopia (literally meaning no place). As explained in Printing and the Mind of Man (47) "Utopia is not, as often imagined, More's ideal state; it exemplifies only the virtues of wisdom, fortitude, temperance, and justice. It reflects the moral poverty of the states which More knew, whose Christian rulers should possess also the Christian virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity."
