It was highly influential and had a long standing impact on the perception of Catholicism and Spain in Britain. English Puritans were particularly enthralled by the work, which was subsequently taken to the new world. Although his account is one-sided, Foxe wrote about his contemporaries from personal knowledge or firsthand accounts, unobtainable elsewhere. <br> John Foxe was an Oxford-trained churchman, who became a Protestant after reading the early works of the Reformation and meeting with Hugh Latimer and William Tyndale at Oxford. Both Tyndale (1536, strangled and then burnt at the stake) and Latimer (1555, burnt at the stake) would later be martyred and their stories told by Foxe. Upon the assent of Queen Mary, Foxe left England for Frankfort and Basel, Switzerland. Foxe would have met a similar fate, but narrowly esca … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEIBNIZ, Gottfried Wilhelm.
Leipzig: Christopher Günther for J. Gross & J. F. Gleditsch, 1684. First edition. First edition of Leibniz's invention of the differential calculus. "Leibniz was an almost universal genius whose place in the history of mathematics depends on his being an independent inventor of the infinitesimal calculus and on his contributions to combinatorial analysis which foreshadowed the development of modern mathematical analysis ... The Acta Eruditorum was established in imitation of the French Journal des Sçavans in Berlin in 1682 and Leibniz was a frequent contributor. Another German mathematician (E.W. Tschirnhausen), having published in it his paper on quadratures, based on researches that Leibniz had communicated to him, Leibniz at last decided in 1684 to present to the world the more abstruse parts of his own work on the calculus. His epoch-making papers give rules of calculation without proof for rates of variation of functions and for drawing tangents to curves ... The infinitesimal calculus originated in the 17th century with the researches of Kepler, Cavalieri, Torrecelli, Fermat and Barrow, but the two independent inventors of the subject, as we understand it today, were Newton and Leibniz ... Although both Newton and Leibniz developed similar ideas, Leibniz devised a superior symbolism and his notation is now an essential feature in all presentation of the subject ... With the calculus a new era began in mathematics, and the development of mathematical physics since the 17th century would not have been possible without the aid of this powerful technique" (PMM). Leibniz " … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, Richard Chiswell, 1684. First Thus. First Impression. Hardback. First edition translated by Gilbert Burnet (often quoted as preferable to Ralph Robinson's). One of the most important taproot texts for modern speculative fiction and a milestone in the genre's history. A lovely recent binding, marred by loss from every leaf that has been expertly repaired but still pretty obvious. A little spotted. A rare edition. Pagination: [24], 206. First leaf is a blank, followed by the title page and then the prologue. Our previous copy had to blanks before the title page, though the collation on this copy seems correct. Utopia is one of the most important works to have influenced the field of speculative fiction. In the 500 years since its publication, there have been hundreds of imitators, and the field would be a very different landscape without it. Theocritus | Rene Rapin | translated by Thomas Creech
Oxford: Anthony Stephens, 1684. [8], 68, 160 p. + frontispiece | 8vo | A^4 a-h^4 i^2 ^2A-U^4 | 183 x 111 mm ¶ First complete edition in English of the author's thirty pastoral poems (preceded only by a 16-page pamphlet containing six idylls, published in 1588 and with only a single recorded copy in ESTC). Includes Rene Rapin's Treatise de carmine pastorali, first published at Paris in 1659 and here appearing in English for the first time. ¶ The tradition of romanticizing the outdoors for an urban audience, which is today big business, traces its origins to these Idylls. Indeed, from Edmund Spenser to Henry David Thoreau to John Muir, Theocritus's influence on literature, and on urban dwellers' relationship with nature, is immeasurable. ¶ Engraved frontispiece of a bucolic shepherd scene (closely shaved, just barely affecting the image); woodcut frontispiece; errata on leaf i2v. Text of the Idylls is leaded, this edition likely intended for students. --- PROVENANCE: "W. Bromley" on front free endpaper. --- CONDITION: Full contemporary brown calf, rebacked in period style. ¶ Leather covering boards cracking, but consolidated; edges of first and last few leaves brittle and a bit chipped; closed tear in leaf g1, the result of a paper defect, affecting three lines of text. --- REFERENCES: ESTC R217040

ROCOLES, Jean Baptiste de.
Leyde, Jean Prins, 1684.Contemporary calf, spine gilt (spine ends sl. dam., 1 hinge sl. dam.). With engraved frontispiece, folding plan of Vienna and 10 engraved portraits. (24), 431 pp.With engraved bookplate of Albus Currus. (Wikipedia). - (Age-browned).Sturminger 2550.

Francis Quarles
London: S. Williams, 1684. Two illustrated books bound together, 90 small engravings in total, plus Harvard letter (sort of reverse provenance!) and appears to be the only complete copy on the net: Emblemes by Fra(ncis) Quarles (aka Emblem Book) Printed for J. Williams at the Sign of the Crown at St. Paul's Church 1624 with a dedication dated 1634 but according to the accompanying letter was in fact printed in 1684, a reissue of a 1683 edition. 75 emblems, each with an engraving and accompanying philosophical, religious, didactic text. bound with: Hieroglyphikes of the Life of Man by Fra(ncis) Quarles 15 emblems each with an engraving and text. plus bonus: Letter from Library of Harvard University, the Houghton Library, signed by William Jackson and dated 1945. Jackson apparently dealt with Harvard's rare and early books and manuscripts, from 1942 to 1965. The letter indicates that Jackson on behalf of the library believed he was buying a book (this copy) printed in 1634 but further research indicated it was actually from 1684, a resissue of a 1683 edition. The Emblemes book and a book of Horace were being returned to a Miss Mable Zahn, possibly an antiquarian bookseller? Edition/Size/Binding: A late 17-century 1684 edition, appears to be a reissue of a 1683 edition (the first edition was 1624 and very rare and went through numerous editions through 1700) Small octavo/12mo 6.5"x4" (16.5x10cm); bound in leather, boards from circa 1700 with new spine (circa 1970-80?), endpapers appear to be original. In 1684 [Leibniz presented] the method of determining algebraic integals of algebraic functions, a brief presentation of the differential calculus with a hint concerning the solution of Debaune's problem by means of the logarithmic curve, and further remarks on the fundamental ideas of the integral calculus' (DSB).Leibniz was to become embroiled in a long dispute with Newton over priority in the discovery. It is now generally agreed that Newton anticipated Leibniz, but Leibniz' system was the first published. Besides, the Leibnizian notation prevailed over the Newtonian and is the system in use today. It has long been known that the 1684 paper exists in at least two different settings (see Edwin Wolf, The library of James Logan (1974) p 4; also The Honeyman collection, vol V, nos 1972-3) but no priority between the printings has been established before. *** [English translation available upon request. (Paris, 2 Aoust, 1684). 4to. Old half calf, pink wrappers preserved. 8 pp.By 1683, the Ottoman Empire had spread westward until Vienne itself was under siege. Campaigns by the members of the Holy League, comprised of Austria, Poland and the Venetian Rupublic, finally brought relief to Central Europe, and negociations ended with the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1693. This Treaty, between Turkey on the one side and the countries of the Holy League on the other, resulted in Turkey's loss of Hungary, Transylvania, Croatia, Slavonia, Dalmatia, the Peloponnesus, and other territories. The Treaty also marked the beginning of the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire. This pamphlet pertains to the taking of Vicegard and Weitzen, two towns close to Budapest, by Charles, Duke of Lorraine and his Holy League forces, not long after they had relieved Vienna. Some months later, in early 1685, they also took Budapest from the Turks, and the Turkish hegemony in Eastern Europe was over.We have not located any copy in any library which we have consulted.
