HASIO/HAAS, Johann Matthias
Nuremberg: Homann Heirs. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 18 x 21.5". This decorative map of Africa provides then-contemporary knowledge about the coastal regions of the continent. Beginning with the example of J.B. Homann's 175 map of Africa, Haas then added additional cartographic information gleaned from the work of French cartographers Delisle and D'Anville. Significant details include the distinct regions of Egypt, Nubia and Abyssinia, the inclusion of Lake Nyasa as Lac Marawi, and the labeling of the Congo and the Dutch settlements of Castell Batov and Stellenbosch at the Cape. However, the map%u2019s most striking feature is its cartouche, a scene of Europeans and Africans interacting that fills the lower left corner of the map. Lions another indigenous animals resting in the foreground suggest this scene is a peaceful one, characterized--somewhat ficticiously--by cooperation and understanding rather than warfare. Table Bay and Table Mountain in Capetown are visible in the distance. With its incorporation of a descriptive text, the cartouche demonstrates how Europeans viewed Africa as an exotic land of both intrigue and potential. The map is in very good condition with no chips or tears. Overall clean impression. Johann Matthias Haas (1684-1724) was a mathematician, astronomer, and cartographer. He published many of his maps under the firm of the Homann Heirs, who carried on the work of mapmaker Johann Baptist Homann. This map illustrates the European view of African in the early part of the 18th century.

SWAMMERDAM, Jan.
BMC NH, p. 2055; Hagen II, p. 209; Horn & Schenkling 21795; Nissen, ZBI 4053; STCN (6 copies); for the author: DSB XIII, pp. 168-175. Reissue of the rare Latin translation first published in Utrecht, by Meinardus van Dreunen in 1684, of Swammerdam's famous work on the metamorphosis of insects. Since Aristotle, the theory on insects was based on three suppositions, insects lack internal anatomy, they originate by spontaneous generation and they develop by metamorphosis. The idea of metamorphosis was that a sudden and total change from one kind of creature into another, comparable to the alchemical transmutation of a base metal into gold. Swammerdam's thesis was fundamentally new and significant. He believed all three suppositions to be false and devoted a wide variety of investigations to refute these ideas. With a small tear, the first few pages heavily browned and foxed, one small tear and some occasional slight damp stains and foxing, but with the plates in very good condition. Binding re-backed and slightly rubbed near the edges. Good copy.

RAPIN RENÉ
" - Chez François Muguet, à Paris 1684, in-4 (18,5x25cm), xxviij ; 305pp. (20) 388pp. Edition-originale.com - [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Edition originale, rare, parue anonymement, citée p … [Click Below for Full Description]
