LE CÈNE, CHARLES:
Amsterdam: Chez Henry Desbordes. 1684. 7 Blatt, 367 Seiten. Barclay, Robert.
1684. Innengelenk leicht gelockert, insgesamt von sehr guter Erhaltung. Kleiner Stempel auf Vortitel. Robert Barclay (* 23. Dezember 1648 in Gordonstown, Morayshire; † 3. [Click Below for Full Description]

More, Thomas
1684. Very good (please see full item description for details). More, Thomas. Utopia, Written in Latin by Sir Thomas More, Chancellor of England; Translated into English. London: Richard Chiswell, 1684. First edition of this translation, by Gilbert Burnet (1643-1714; Scottish philosopher, historian, and Bishop of Salisbury). 8vo, [22], 206, with original rear blank (P4); front blank (A1) appears to have been replaced. Early (possibly original) boards, rebacked with recent new leather spine with red label, new endpapers. Mild browning to edges of title page, which bears and early ownership signature (Henry Thomson), else very clean. Burnet's translation is generally regarded as preferable to the first English translation, done by Ralph Robinson in 1551. Pforzheimer (742) notes that this translation "is in some respects much superior and certainly represents a more readable text except to those who enjoy the Tudor vigor of Robinson's version." ESTC R7176; Wing M2961; Sabin 50546. First published in Latin in 1516, More's highly influential work is a socio-political commentary presented through an account of the government and customs of a fictional island called Utopia (literally meaning no place). As explained in Printing and the Mind of Man (47) "Utopia is not, as often imagined, More's ideal state; it exemplifies only the virtues of wisdom, fortitude, temperance, and justice. It reflects the moral poverty of the states which More knew, whose Christian rulers should possess also the Christian virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity." Studiis Celeberriam, Avitae Religionis, Germani Candoris, Artium Omnium.', mit altem Grenzkolorit, 1684, 119 x 90 Cart. Bavariae 2.23 u. S. 70ff.; Stopp/L. S. 78; NDB V, 155f. Artikelnummer: 325107.

Kino, Eusebio Francisco
San Bruno, Baja California, 1684. [1]p., with docketing on verso, approximately 10 x 7 3/4 inches. Previously folded sheet, slightly cropped at right edge. Very faint scattered foxing. Very good. A quite rare and early manuscript document signed by and in the hand of Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino, dating to his first year in Spanish America. Kino (1645-1711) began his career in Baja California in 1683, and went on to pioneer European settlement in what is now southern Arizona. His first mission was San Bruno in southern Baja California, which he founded in 1683. After eight months of complete isolation from European society, a relief ship finally arrived on Aug. 10, 1684, bearing another Jesuit missionary, Jean- Baptiste Copart, as well as supplies, letters, and twenty additional men. Five days later, Copart led Kino in his formal profession of faith, the vows which made him a true Jesuit. This document, written entirely in Latin, is written under Father Copart's authority by Kino, transcribing his vows, with his signature at bottom right. It discusses the Jesuit vows of poverty and obedience (pauperta and obedientia), and concludes "Sancti Brunonis Insularum Californiarum," with the date spelled out in Latin. It is docketed on verso: "Profes'n del P. Eusebio Fran'co Kino 1684." Any manuscript material by Father Kino is extremely rare on the market.

Barclay, Robert.
Innengelenk leicht gelockert, insgesamt von sehr guter Erhaltung. Kleiner Stempel auf Vortitel. Robert Barclay (* 23. Dezember 1648 in Gordonstown, Morayshire; † 3.
