Paris: R. J. B. de La Caille, 1684. Texte en français uniquement, pas en anglais. Première édition. Avec environ 355 illustrations de gravure sur bois d'emblèmes basés sur l'héraldique. This is not a bilingual edition. Text in French only, not in English. First edition. 7.25 x 4.75 inches. Brown tree calf binding, possibly contemporary but more likely late 18th century. Hubbed spine with six compartments, with gilt-stamped lettering and design. Small losses at spine head and tail, minor. Mild rubbing to the boards. The rounded corners are moderately bumped. With engraved vignette to title page, with headpieces, tailpieces and embellished capitals, and, most significantly, with approximately 355 woodcut illustrations of emblems. The pages display age toning and scattered spots of soiling, with some tidewater marks in the upper right corner of several pages. The handsome armorial bookplate of Theodore Pagan is on the front pastedown and a bookplate from Arthur Mullin is affixed to the opposite FEP. Else a clean and presentable copy. This is a handsome volume in remarkably good condition for its age. Rare in any condition. This volume is an early French emblem book; not a later edition of the author's "L'art des emblêmes," Lyon, l662, but a different work about emblems, their design and meaning. From Wikipedia: "Ménestrier [1631-1705] was a French heraldist, a member of the Society of Jesus [Jesuit], a numismatist and antiquary, and atte … [Click Below for Full Description]

ORBIGNY, Alcide d'.
DSB X, pp. 221-222; Ward 1684; D.A. Young, Geological evidence for the age of the earth, p. 109. Complete first edition, including the often lacking tables, of a standard work on stratigraphy and paleontology by the famous Alcide d'Orbigny (1801-1857), "perhaps the most accomplished French paleontologist of the generation following Cuvier" (Young). In this work "he subdivided the Cretaceous System into 'stages', based on the notion that a typical fauna would be annihilated and replaced by a new fauna" (Young). He based his new classification of fossils on his research on geological strata, establishing the vital link between paleontology and stratigraphic geology that has proved so fruitful for both disciplines. Many contemporary geologists opposed his stratigraphic ideas, but despite this controversy he was appointed professor of paleontology at the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris in 1853. The work contains numerous woodengraved illustrations by E. Salle, which show an enormous variety of plant and animal fossils, from tiny invertebrates to gigantic dinosaurs. In very good condition, with only some faint foxing on the first and last few pages. Bindings of the text volumes slightly rubbed along the extremities and worn along the corners; paper wrappers of the tables slightly soiled, but still in good condition.

Tavernier, Jean-Baptiste.
1684. Folio (200 x 305 mm). 6 parts in one vol. (18), 264 pp. (2), 214 pp. (8), 154, (2) pp. (6), 113, (1) pp. (14), 87, (1), 66, (2) pp. Modern half calf over marbled boards using remains of 18th-c. calf spine with modern gilt red morocco label. The first collected edition in English, translated by John Phillips and Henry Oldenburg: an account of Tavernier's travels to Turkey, Persia, India, and Japan (with large map of Japan), containing reports about the Japanese persecution of the Christians and the Dutch settlements in the Far East. Book Two, chapter Nine of the Persian Travels is of particular interest, as it contains an account of Tavernier's voyage through the Arabian Gulf, mentioning Bahrain, Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Hormuz and making observations on the people and navigation of the Gulf. There is also a bird's-eye map of the Strait of Hormuz showing the Musandam Peninsula (peppered with palm trees and captioned "A promontorie of Arabia the happey"), Hormuz, Larak, and Qeshm island, as well as Bandar Abbas and Bandar Kong on the Persian side. Intruguingly, this engraved map also includes depth soundings throughout the Gulf, making it useful as an early "Persian Gulf Pilot". A separate, illustrated chapter discusses extensively the invaluable pearl in the collection of the Imam of Muscat. Another illustrated chapter discusses "The Money of Arabia". In general, the plates depict festivals, processions, costumes, views, and images of the Eastern flora and fauna as well as coins and gems. - Occasional browning, but well-preserved on the whole. (Oxford. University.)
Printed on linen, engraved surface 525 x 450 to platemark, a few brown spots, mostly in the margins, 625 x 570mm to edge of mount, with approx. 10mm folded over, framed and glazed The first Oxford Almanack appeared in 1673. There was none in 1675, making this the eleventh in a series which has otherwise been published annually for well over 300 years. They were from the beginning produced in largish numbers, though those printed 'upon Cloath' were necessarily fewer. Whether on paper or cloth (early on issued as silk handkerchiefs), their ephemeral nature has entailed a low survival rate, and an example as early as this, is rare indeed. Dr. Fell took an interest in these productions, and this was the penultimate one in which he was involved. 'On the left, on a plinth, a figure in classical armour, trampling on his enemies, is crowned by Victory. On the right is a group of figures, including a seated woman with a book and another writing the eclipses for the year on a scroll. Neptune stands in his chariot behind. In the distance is a view of Oxford [from Loggan, Oxonia illustrata, 1675, with Tom Tower added]. Oxford was at this time strongly Tory, High Church, and monarchist, and the portrayal of the triumph of Charles II over his enemies may reflect the University's enthusiastic loyalty to the Crown following the Rye House Plot in 1683 ... The group on the plinth is from the engraving by Villamena after Goelius of the statue of Moschino ... with the head changed to a portrait of Charles II' (Peter, The Oxford Almanacks, p. 34). The head is somewhat awkwardly placed.
