François Boucher / Antoine Watteau
1684. Vermutlich frühes 20. Jahrhundert.

Simon, Richard
Printed by Thomas Braddyll. Hardcover. B01N1LRVFU 1684 first edition, 'Printed by Thomas Braddyll' (London), 7 1/4 x 9 3/8 inches tall hardbound, brown paper-covered boards over black cloth spine, printed paper label to spine, [16], 104, 137-304, 205-207 (mispaginated as issued, but complete). Association copy. Moderate soiling and heavy rubbing, chipping and edgewear to covers, especially at the tips. Owned by Biblical scholar Arthur Samuel Peake (1865-1929), whose notes fill the blank front and rear endpapers and a number of pages in the margin (bio below). Most of the marginal notes are in pencil, while Peake's endpaper notes are in ink. Peake's son donated the volume to the Benedictine Community of Prinknish, Gloucester, with a presentation bookplate to the front pastedown and Prinknish Abbey plates to the front free-endpaper. Cracking between the title page and dedication page - and between the rear pastedown and adjoining page - but the binding holds firmly. Chipping and tearing to the free-endpapers with Peake's notes. A couple of signatures slightly pulled. A few pages with mostly marginal staining or edge chipping. Despite these detractions, a rare complete copy of this important early example in English of Biblical criticism. ~HH~ An anonymous 1684 English Catholic translation of this important work by French priest and longtime Oratorian Richard Simon (1638-1712), an influential biblical critic, orientalist and controversialist, called by some the 'father of Biblical criticism.' Simon's Histoire critique du Vieux Testament, though it passed the censorship of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Prijs: ?650,-.

Asia AsiaA decorative map prepared by Prof. Johann Matthias Haas (1684-1742), who produced a number of continental and regional maps for the atlases issued by the firm of Homann Heirs in 1744. Kamchatka has been reduced to its proper size vis ? vis Johann Christoph's version, while Siberia is drawn with an outline familiar to us today. The coastal waters of Japan remain a little haphazard with Hokkaido -Terra Efo, Yedso ou Yesfo- still attached to the mainland, but Sakhalin Island (Sagalien) is clearly marked. The Malay Peninsula has a very poor outline compared to earlier maps by Homann. Johor (Iohor) is located on the north-east coastline (somewhere in the vicinity of present day Kota Bahru). Suleiman I of Persia].
Venice & Naples, Francesco Benzi, 1684. 4to. (4) pp. With a woodcut title vignette. Disbound. Extremely rare early newspaper, reporting on the communication between Shah Suleiman of Persia and Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland, shortly after the latter had liberated the besieged city of Vienna from the rival Ottoman forces. The remainder of the reports pertains to further military successes against the Turks (in the wake of which several European states were even emboldened to propose a coalition with Safavid Persia against the Ottoman Empire); there are also details about storms, earthquakes, and the sightings of comets, all of which were thought to bode ill to the Ottomans. - The Polish King's response to Suleiman's letter, though announced in the headline, is not printed here; the newspaper is complete thus with two conjoined quarto leaves, conforming with the single other known copy, kept at the Biblioteka Narodowa, Warsaw. - Slight browning; edges untrimmed. - K. Zawadzki, Gazety ulotne polskie II, 1122. Cf. OCLC 82569381 (microform only).

BOUGARD, René and John Thomas SERRES.
, . . Abbey, England 344; Cat. NHSM, p. 218; Pastoureau, Bougard N (5 copies); Phillips & LeGear 2852. First English edition, with aquatint profiles, of Bougard's Le Petit Flambeau de la Mer, a marine pilot guide to coastal navigation originally published in 1684 and extensively revised for the present edition by Serres. The coastal profiles cover the British Isles, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France, and the islands included among the maps include Corsica, Malta and Corfu. The coastal profiles show many spectacular cliffs and rock formations, numerous light-houses (an important source for their history), fortresses and occasionally other buildings, as well as ships and smaller boats, a large view of the whole city of La Valette on Malta, and even three smoking volcanoes (Vesuvius, Stromboli and Etna). The text includes information on the Barbary Coast, and islands and coasts en route to the East Indies. This is the first major revision to the maps and views of the Petit Flambeau, which saw only minor changes of content from 1684 to 1716 and no more in the editions (to 1789) before the present. With a contemporary owner's signature on the title-page (Peter Rye) and the lovely armorial bookplate of the Philadelphia publisher and bibliophile Moncure Biddle (1882-ca. 1952). Spine subtly restored, but otherwise fine and wholy untrimmed.
