Chatelain Henri Abraham (1684 - 1743 ) Amsterdam
Artist: Chatelain Henri Abraham ( - 1743 ) Amsterdam; issued in : Amsterdam; date: 1720 1684 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; condition: Some restoration at centerfold; size (in cm): 37 x 43 - description: Map shows the inhabitants of Virgina and shows 14 scenes of their life, hunt and food preperation. - vita of the artist: Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684 - 1743) was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He lived consecutively in Paris, St. Martins, London (c. 1710), The Hague (c. 1721) and Amsterdam (c. 1728). He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720. Innovative for its time, the Atlas Historique combined fine engraving and artwork with scholarly studies of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography. Some scholarship suggests that the Atlas Historique was not exclusively compiled by Henri Chatelain, as is commonly believed, but rather was a family enterprise involving Henri, his father Zacharie and his brother, also Zacharie.

Bound in recent blue paper boards. Some damp-staining to bottom corner of all leaves, marginal worming in places - just clipping text at final leaf. The illustrated article in this issue concerns the development, by one Maurice Wheeler (c.1648-1727), of a clock movement that measures time 'after a peculiar manner', with an account given of the reasons behind said motion and of the manner of its timekeeping alongside mathematical proofs. Wheeler refers to the device, described as a 'domestic time-keeper', as an 'automaton' that may potentially be one of the 'noblest machines of wheel work'. Philosophical Transactions, latterly The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, was established in 1665 as the first journal dedicated to the publication of new and often revolutionary discoveries, experimental research and speculative essays within natural philosophy. Over the years the Philosophical Transactions have been home to the most important scientific authors and luminaries in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and zoology; including Isaac Newton, Robert Hooke, Robert Boyle, Michael Faraday, and Charles Darwin. . Chatelain Henri Abraham ( 1684 - 1743 ) Amsterdam
Artist: Chatelain Henri Abraham ( - 1743 ) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1720. - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 37,5 x 43; - description : Map of the Mediterranean. Ornamented with numerous vignettes representing some of the Dutch settlements in the East Indies.Exhaustive information about the settlements is given in lengthy tables. The maps were accompanied by information pertaining to cosmography, geography, history, chronology, genealogy, topography, heraldry, and costume of the world.; - vita of the artist: Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684 - 1743) was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins.

Visscher II, Nicolaes
Prijs: ?650,-.
