[ROYAL SOCIETY]
Oxford: Printed at the Theater, and are to by sold by Moses Pitt, 1684. 623-670pp. Drop-head title. With an engraved folding plate depicting a horological mechanism. Bound in recent blue paper boards. Some damp-staining to bottom corner of all leaves, marginal worming in places - just clipping text at final leaf. The illustrated article in this issue concerns the development, by one Maurice Wheeler (c.1648-1727), of a clock movement that measures time 'after a peculiar manner', with an account given of the reasons behind said motion and of the manner of its timekeeping alongside mathematical proofs. Wheeler refers to the device, described as a 'domestic time-keeper', as an 'automaton' that may potentially be one of the 'noblest machines of wheel work'. Philosophical Transactions, latterly The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, was established in 1665 as the first journal dedicated to the publication of new and often revolutionary discoveries, experimental research and speculative essays within natural philosophy. Over the years the Philosophical Transactions have been home to the most important scientific authors and luminaries in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and zoology; including Isaac Newton, Robert Hooke, Robert Boyle, Michael Faraday, and Charles Darwin. . He was the uncle of Isaac Vossius 1618-1689, who owned the original manuscript of the Codex for some time. Junius copied the manuscript and later published the four gospels in Gothic and Anglo-Saxon. Ornamented with numerous vignettes representing some of the Dutch settlements in the East Indies.Exhaustive information about the settlements is given in lengthy tables. The maps were accompanied by information pertaining to cosmography, geography, history, chronology, genealogy, topography, heraldry, and costume of the world.; - vita of the artist: Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684 - 1743) was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He lived consecutively in Paris, St. Martins, London (c. 1710), The Hague (c. 1721) and Amsterdam (c. 1728). He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720. Visscher II, Nicolaes
Prijs: ?650,-.

His style is not easily accessible, and often shows a sentence structure derived from Latin. Ca. 1630 he started with his translation into Dutch of works of the Roman historian Tacitus, 56-117 A.D. These translations of the 'Annales', 'Historiae', 'Germania' and the 'Agricola' were posthumely published in 1684 by his able biographer Geeraert Brandt, 1626-1685. Manuscript title on the back. Woodcut initials. The Letter of Clemens has a separate title page, indicating that this is the 3rd impression) (Condition: Vellum slightly soiled & scratched; upper corner of the front pastedown torn off. A few pinpoint wormholes in the uppermargin of the last 150 p., not affecting the text.§ STCN calls for 2 leaves between the preliminary pages and the beginning of the translation, and an illustration; these 2 leaves and illustration are lacking in our copy; the 2 leaves contain translated testimonia of Christ from Flavius Josephus (3x), Tacitus (2x), and the short apocryphical letter of Lentulus to the emperor Tiberius, giving a physical and personal description of Christ; the lacking illustration is a portrait of Jesus Christ; the different quality paper and the deviant typeface used in the lacking leaves, suggests that they were printed and added later) (Note: At the beginning of the preface the publisher declares that when he wanted to bring on the market once more the Dutch translation of C. Plattengrösse ca. 160 x 115 mm, Blattgrösse ca. 197 x 144 mm (minimal gebräunt und knitterspurig, minimale Randläsuren, zwei Fleckchen im Rand, insgesamt gut erhalten) Deutsche Ausgabe der frühen Amerika-Karte, die in \"Beschreibung des ganzen Welt-Kreisses\" erschien, zuvor 1683 in der französischen Ausgabe von Alain Manesson Mallet \"Description de l`univers\".
