HEIDEGGER, Johann Heinrich
Amsterdam: Printed by Heinricum Wetstenium, 1684. Vellum. Very good+. 4to (8.1", 20.6 cm). [28], 598 40 [20] pp. Latin. Francesco Guicciardini (editor). First edition: The preeminent Swiss theologian of his time (not the 20th-century philosopher), Heidegger (1633-1698) was a professor of Hebrew, philosophy, dogmatics and ecclesiastical history, moral philosophy, and theology. This is a chief example of his influential writings, which were largely leveled against the Roman Catholic Church; though not antagonistic, all his works were on the list of forbidden books. The Protestant Reformation sought to end church injustices and hierarchies and sought secular religion, priests relieved of celibacy, and dismissed opulence. Post-reformation, Heidegger sought to unify the Swiss Reformed churches, still organized as separate entities. Also, the Age of Enlightenment of the 17th century characterized by the scientific revolution, philosophers circulating their ideas, and printed works served to undermine the authority of the monarchy and the church. Encyclopaedia Britannica. British Library online. CERL online. Heritage Auctions catalogue of 2015. Catalogue of the Library of the Late William R. Williams, STD, LLD. of 1896, Part II, Item no. 686. London, Richard Chiswell, 1684. First Thus. First Impression. Hardback. First edition translated by Gilbert Burnet (often quoted as preferable to Ralph Robinson's). One of the most important taproot texts for modern speculative fiction and a milestone in the genre's history. A lovely recent binding, marred by loss from every leaf that has been expertly repaired but still pretty obvious. A little spotted. A rare edition. Pagination: [24], 206. First leaf is a blank, followed by the title page and then the prologue. Our previous copy had to blanks before the title page, though the collation on this copy seems correct. Utopia is one of the most important works to have influenced the field of speculative fiction. In the 500 years since its publication, there have been hundreds of imitators, and the field would be a very different landscape without it. Barclay, Robert.:
1684. XVI Blatt, 450 Seiten, 12 Blatt. Bestoßen und berieben, unteres und oberes Kapitel leicht beschädigt. Innengelenk leicht gelockert, insgesamt von sehr guter Erhaltung. Kleiner Stempel auf Vortitel. Robert Barclay (* 23. Dezember 1648 in Gordonstown, Morayshire; ? 3. [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam: Printed by Heinricum Wetstenium, 1684. Vellum. 4to (8.1", 20.6 cm). [28], 598 40 [20] pp. Latin. 686. Rear pastedown with bookplate of Rev. William Robert Williams noted for his library of church history and theology remarkable for its breadth and historic provenance; title-page with small William R. Saint Hilaire was a relatively unknown 17th-century French surgeon whose works are mostly unfamiliar to modern physicians. His book 'Anatomy of the Human Body' is an in-depth examination of the human body and its anatomical make up. Woodcut initials and ornaments. T-p and few other leaves dusty and a trifle spotted, a bit heavier to upper edge, slight browning, intermittent light water stain to upper outer corner, a few leaves lightly dampstained, small hole to blank section of fourth leaf. Modern 18th-century-style polished calf, blind-stamped to a panel design. Slightly later inked bibliographical annotations to flyleaf. It features a whole section on the flora of Scottish regions, as well as 19 engraved illustrations of plants. This copy lacks the engraved plate with the armorial portrait of the author usually appearing as frontispiece. As in the copy at the Bib. AUGUSTINE, of Hippo
Paris: Wear and imperfections from age and use. 1684 Saint Augustine of Hippo Letters Jerome Pope Boniface Catholic Philosophy Â"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.Â" Â- Saint Augustine of Hippo Augustine of Hippo was a 5th-century early Christian church philosopher and theologian. While most-known for his work Â'City of GodÂ', he also wrote many other treatises on aspects of the Christian faith. His stance on free will vs predestination and fatalism was supported by and still is supported by, the Catholic Church, as his teachings on free will are consistent with modern doctrine. Augustine was well known for his works on Christine Doctrine, Â'Free WillÂ', as well as Â'The City of GodÂ'. However, he also wrote hundreds of letters with other early church fathers. These letters include correspondence from Jerome, Crispin, Pope Boniface I, Saint Nebridius, and others. AUGUSTINE, of Hippo Les lettres de Saint Augustin, traduites en françois par M.
