BOUGARD, René and John Thomas SERRES.
, . . Abbey, England 344; Cat. NHSM, p. 218; Pastoureau, Bougard N (5 copies); Phillips & LeGear 2852. First English edition, with aquatint profiles, of Bougard's Le Petit Flambeau de la Mer, a marine pilot guide to coastal navigation originally published in 1684 and extensively revised for the present edition by Serres. The coastal profiles cover the British Isles, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France, and the islands included among the maps include Corsica, Malta and Corfu. The coastal profiles show many spectacular cliffs and rock formations, numerous light-houses (an important source for their history), fortresses and occasionally other buildings, as well as ships and smaller boats, a large view of the whole city of La Valette on Malta, and even three smoking volcanoes (Vesuvius, Stromboli and Etna). The text includes information on the Barbary Coast, and islands and coasts en route to the East Indies. This is the first major revision to the maps and views of the Petit Flambeau, which saw only minor changes of content from 1684 to 1716 and no more in the editions (to 1789) before the present. With a contemporary owner's signature on the title-page (Peter Rye) and the lovely armorial bookplate of the Philadelphia publisher and bibliophile Moncure Biddle (1882-ca. 1952). Spine subtly restored, but otherwise fine and wholy untrimmed.

Asia map - Homann
Asia AsiaA decorative map prepared by Prof. Johann Matthias Haas (1684-1742), who produced a number of continental and regional maps for the atlases issued by the firm of Homann Heirs in 1744. Kamchatka has been reduced to its proper size vis à vis Johann Christoph's version, while Siberia is drawn with an outline familiar to us today. The coastal waters of Japan remain a little haphazard with Hokkaido -Terra Efo, Yedso ou Yesfo- still attached to the mainland, but Sakhalin Island (Sagalien) is clearly marked. The Malay Peninsula has a very poor outline compared to earlier maps by Homann. Johor (Iohor) is located on the north-east coastline (somewhere in the vicinity of present day Kota Bahru). Tibet, which is named, bears the alternative title of "Dalai Lammae". Original handcolouring. Size: 47,6 x 55,3 cm. Price: Euro625,- (excl. VAT/BTW)

Zuidelijke Nederlanden - Nicolaes Visscher, 1684
Prijs: Euro 650,- GERESERVEERD

SWAMMERDAM, Jan.
MC NH, p. 2055; Hagen II, p. 209; Horn & Schenkling 21795; Nissen, ZBI 4053; STCN (6 copies); for the author: DSB XIII, pp. 168-175. Re-issue of the rare Latin translation first published in Utrecht by Meinardus van Dreunen in 1684, of Swammerdam's famous work on the metamorphosis of insects. Since Aristotle, the theory on insects was based on three suppositions, insects lack internal anatomy, they originate by spontaneous generation and they develop by metamorphosis. The idea of metamorphosis was that a sudden and total change from one kind of creature into another, comparable to the alchemical transmutation of a base metal into gold. Swammerdam's thesis was fundamentally new and significant. He believed all three suppositions to be false and devoted a wide variety of investigations to refute these ideas. Plates a bit browned. Good copy.

LEEUWENHOEK, A. VAN.
Leiden, Delft, Boutesteyn, Krooneveld, Beman, 1684-1718. 4 volumes. 4to (185 x 115mm), with 3 engraved frontispieces (last one with medaillion portrait of Leeuwenhoek), an engraved portrait of Leeuwenhoek, 100 engraved plates (many folding) and 128 engravings in the text (including 2 woodcuts). Contemporary Dutch calf, richly gilt decorated spines in 6 compartments (2 volumes with some skillful repairs to spines). A complete set of Leeuwenhoek's letters in first and second issues. Letters 28-36, 38-47, 53-67 in second issue, all others are first. An absolutely complete set of Leeuwenhoek's letters, very rare, in the original Dutch. "Collected letters of the Dutch pioneer in microscopy, the first to see and describe bacteria, red blood corpuscles, spermatozoa" (Horblit 65). Contains Letters 28-146 and I-XLVI, which is all published. The first 27 letters were published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society and were not published separately.A complete set such as this is extremely uncommon. The letters in the Dutch language preceded the Latin versions and are thus from a collector's point of view far more desirable than the Latin edition. The first edition of Leeuwenhoek's letters is so rare that the Norman collection only had parts of it and Dobell had only seen one copy.In 1672 Leeuwenhoek began to make his own microscopes with extremely powerful lenses, with which he examined innumerable organic and inorganic structures. Regner de Graaf introduced him to the Royal Society in 1673, and from then on for half a century he wrote long letters to the Society in w … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOLBERG, Ludvig.
Ehrencron-Müller, Bibl. Holbergs skrifter; STCN (5 copies). First Dutch edition of the autobiography of the multitalented Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754), famous in Denmark both for his fine satirical plays comparable with Moliere's and for his important contributions to legal thought. A follower of Voltaire (another satirical playwright with a good legal mind), Holberg helped bring Enlightenment ideas to Denmark. Outside Denmark he is best known for his only novel, an imaginary voyage with elements of fantasy and science fiction known in English as Niels Klim's underground travels. His present autobiography is "candid, concise, and extremely readable, mingling jest with earnest in an altogether delightful fashion" (William Morton Payne, Ludvig Holberg). His powers of observation and analysis make his account of his travels in England, France and Italy far more than a travelogue. With a small hole in 1 leaf, occasional minor foxing or superficial stains and an occasional small marginal defect (1 tear repaired) but otherwise in very good condition. The binding is worn at the hinges but still good. The genuine voyages of the author of a famous imaginary voyage.

London, Richard Chiswell, 1684. First Thus. First Impression. Hardback. First edition translated by Gilbert Burnet (often quoted as preferable to Ralph Robinson's). One of the most important taproot texts for modern speculative fiction and a milestone in the genre's history. A lovely recent binding, marred by loss from every leaf that has been expertly repaired but still pretty obvious. A little spotted. A rare edition. Pagination: [24], 206. First leaf is a blank, followed by the title page and then the prologue. Our previous copy had to blanks before the title page, though the collation on this copy seems correct. Utopia is one of the most important works to have influenced the field of speculative fiction. In the 500 years since its publication, there have been hundreds of imitators, and the field would be a very different landscape without it. FOXE, John
London: for the Company of Stationers, 1684. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The best edition of Foxe's Book of Martyrs! "I am resolved to sacrifice everything in this transitory world, for the sake of salvation in a world that will last to eternity." ― John Foxe, Foxe's Book of Martyrs A beautiful printing of John Foxe's famous "Acts and Monuments". Foxe began working on this landmark work in 1552. While in exile, in 1554, the first examples of this book were published in Latin focusing on the religious persecution of Lollards in England during the 1400s. However, the rest of his book was written in response to more persecution occurring throughout England. 'Printing and the Mind of Man' says of this work "Since its first English publication, for more than two centuries, it was one of the most widely read books in England... In 1571 a decree ordained that copies were to be placed in all cathedral churches and that the houses of archbishops, bishops, archdeacons and resident canons should all have copies for the use of servants and visitors." This 1684 edition is considered the best edition by Lowndes, much in part to the 22 impressive illustrations and the fact it was the final folio edition published.

*-------* One copy in USA at New York Public Library.

Foxe began working on this landmark work in 1552. While in exile, in 1554, the first examples of this book were published in Latin focusing on the religious persecution of Lollards in England during the 1400s. However, the rest of his book was written in response to more persecution occurring throughout England.'Printing and the Mind of Man' says of this work"Since its first English publication, for more than two centuries, it was one of the most widely read books in England... In 1571 a decree ordained that copies were to be placed in all cathedral churches and that the houses of archbishops, bishops, archdeacons and resident canons should all have copies for the use of servants and visitors."This 1684 edition is considered the best edition by Lowndes, much in part to the 22 impressive illustrations and the fact it was the final folio edition published.Item number: #8440Price: $950FOXE, JohnActs and monuments of matters most special and memorable, happening in the church: with an universal history of the same. Barclay, Robert.
1684. Erste deutsche Auflage. XVI Blatt, 450 Seiten, 12 Blatt. 21,5 x 18,5 cm. Blindgeprägter Ganzledereinband der Zeit. Bestoßen und berieben, unteres und oberes Kapitel leicht beschädigt. Innengelenk leicht gelockert, insgesamt von sehr guter Erhaltung. Kleiner Stempel auf Vortitel. Robert Barclay (* 23. Dezember 1648 in Gordonstown, Morayshire; ? 3. CATULLE (Caius Valerius Catullus).
Isaacum Littleburii, 1684. Petit in-8 carré (192 x 147 mm), 2 ff. n. ch., 343 pp., 15 ff. n. ch. [Click Below for Full Description]
