SWAMMERDAM, Jan.
MC NH, p. 2055; Hagen II, p. 209; Horn & Schenkling 21795; Nissen, ZBI 4053; STCN (6 copies); for the author: DSB XIII, pp. 168-175. Re-issue of the rare Latin translation first published in Utrecht by Meinardus van Dreunen in 1684, of Swammerdam's famous work on the metamorphosis of insects. Since Aristotle, the theory on insects was based on three suppositions, insects lack internal anatomy, they originate by spontaneous generation and they develop by metamorphosis. The idea of metamorphosis was that a sudden and total change from one kind of creature into another, comparable to the alchemical transmutation of a base metal into gold. Swammerdam's thesis was fundamentally new and significant. He believed all three suppositions to be false and devoted a wide variety of investigations to refute these ideas. Plates a bit browned. Good copy.

JOSEPHUS, Flavius.
1684. V. Eeghen & V.d. Kellen 396 (first work only); Klaversma & Hannema 132 & 747. First Dutch edition of all the works on Jewish history by the famous classical Jewish historian Flavius Josephus. They were translated from the latest critical French edition by Arnauld d'Andilly. Though this volume was intended to stand on its own, the French Protestant minister Jacob Basnage, who had moved to the Netherlands in 1684 in anticipation of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, decided to publish the present continuation, carrying the history on to his own time, which grew larger. The present edition is the first complete (in fact the first extensive) Dutch edition, in folio format designed to match the 1706 Dutch edition of Flavius Josephus. The two works therefore form a coherent whole. The illustrations in the first work include 127 designed and engraved by the celebrated Dutch artist Jan Luyken, 99 specially made for the present edition and the others first used in Mortier's Bible, published a year before. Especially in the homes of the strict Calvinists, works on Jewish history were very popular and much read and studied. With occasional leaves in the second work foxed or browned, but otherwise in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition]

Kompendiet om Aristoteles Politik, postumt utgivet av Johan Hadorph, är en lärobok sammanställd av Schefferus och bygger enligt Fant på hans föreläsningar som skytteansk professor. "Perhaps no book in any language was ever the parent of so many imitations, and the source of so many fictions as this" (Sabin). Here are the exploits of Henry Morgan, who sacked Panama and absconded without dividing the booty--a transgression of the pirate's honor that Esquemeling could not applaud; here also the vicious Francis L'Ollonois, who tore out the hearts from his still-living victims and ate them; here are countless tortures and robberies, raids and rampages, as related by a reliable witness. Francis Quarles
London - J. Williams, 1684 Book. GOOD ONLY. Hardcover. A wonderfully illustrated example of this book of emblems by Francis Quarles. Francis Quarles (8 May 1592 8 September 1644) was an English poet most famous for this work. He was entered at Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1608, and subsequently at Lincoln's Inn. Quarles was made cupbearer to the Princess Elizabeth, in 1613, remaining abroad for some years; and before 1629 he was appointed secretary to Ussher, the primate of Ireland. About 1633 he returned to England, and spent the next two years in the preparation of his Emblems, which was originally published in 1635. With an engraved title page and copious amusing, puzzling and beautifulillustrations throughout. Emblem books are a category of mainly didactic illustrated book printed in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, typically containing a number of emblematic images with explanatory text. Scholars differ on the key question of whether the actual emblems in question are the visual images, the accompanying texts, or the combination of the two. With previous owner's copperplate inscriptions to front pastedown and rear free endpaper. Condition: In a calf binding. Externally, rather worn and rubbed with front board tender and rear board starting. Internally, first few pages tender but otherwise generally firmly bound. Page 5-6 missing and one prelim missing. A large closed tear to title page has beensewn in the past. Occasionalink and pencil marks, though otherwise generally bright and clean. Overall: GOOD ONLY.
