It has been suggested that his background as a teacher led to his being concerned with entertaining his readers. This concern manifested itself in the charming harbor scenes and rural landscapes that he included beneath his description of astronomical concepts and diagrams. Mallet himself drew most of the figures that were engraved for this book.

Collin, Friedrich Eberhard
(56), 664, 183, (1) Seiten. Frakturdruck. [Click Below for Full Description]

Kortholt, Christian

Mieth, Michael:
Frankfurt and Leipzig, Johann Christoph Mieth, 1684. (2. edition). 4 parts in 1 volume. 32 : 20,5 cm. 4 leaves, 92 pages, 1 leaf;2 leaves, 82 pages, 1;2 leaves, 74 pages, 1;2 leaves, 62 pages, 2 leaves 31 (of 32) double-page, folded engraved plates. Contemporary calf, spine gilt. Second edition, identical with the first edition, one of the most important works in the field of artillery of the 17. century, dedicated to the emperor Leopold the I. The editor, Michael Mieht (died in 1686), most likely the most famous artillery-expert of his time, was lieutenant-general in the Austrian army and played an important roll in the defence of Vienna against the Turks. The first part deals with the construction of cannons, part two deals with smaller cannons, which are easy to transport, part three deals with shells, mortars and similar explosives, part four explains how to use cannons in the most effective way. The whole oeuvre gives a detailled impression of all aspect of artillery at the end of the 17th century. The engraved plates by Gerard de Groos, after designs by the author, are very illustrative with many details, measurements etc. - Missing the engraved title and plate 7, only ocassionaly some browning; binding a bit rubbed, top and bottom of spine with menor faults. In all still a good copy of this rare work. - Paisey M 1084 (without plate 32); Jähns II, 219 (extensively). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BAYLE, P.)
A Amsterdam, Chez Henry Desbordes, 1684. With printer's mark on title. (22), 333, (3) pp. 12mo. Contemporary calf, gilt spine with raised bands, label with gilt lettering Mori, Bayle Philosophe, p. 348; Sauvy, Livres Saisies à Paris entre 1678 et 1701, 213; Conlon, Prélude, 1809. The very rare and first edition of three of Pierre Bayle's texts. The 8 pieces in this Recueil were all selected by Bayle and three are from his own hand: The Avis au Lecteur, (pp. 3-22); the Dissertatio in qua vindicantur A Peripateticorum exceptionibus rationes quibus aliqui Cartesiani probarunt essentiam corporis sitam esse in extensione (pp. 138-218), and the Theses Philosophicae (pp. 219-265). When Bayle arrived in Rotterdam on October 30, 1681, the Dissertation sur l'Essence des Corps was one of the texts he had taken with him in manuscript, written in his last years at he Academy of Sedan. When he got in contact again with the Amsterdam publisher Henry Desbordes (formerly of Saumur) he got the opportunity to publish this text (March 1684), and to get involved for the first time in editorial, journalistic work in which he would make name with his Nouvelles de la République des Lettres (started autumn 1684). In the Dissertation Bayle tries to defend the central tenet of Cartesianism that the essence of matter consist of extension. Also Bayle's affirmation and great estimation for Malebranche comes to an expression here for the first time (notably for his Recherche de la Vérité) and is defended against attacks of Père Le Valois. Malebranche's philosophy and necessary elaboration of Descartes co … [Click Below for Full Description]

Reisel, Salomon
Journal des Scavans, 11. - A Amsterdam, Chez Pierre le Grand, M.DC.LXXXIV (1684), 404, 18 pp., 12 z.T. gefalt. Kupferstichtafeln, Halbledereinband d.Zt. First Edition! The first material model of the blood circulation was produced by the German Salomon Reisel (1625-1701). "Let's examine Reisel's Statua more closely, probably the most spectacular item in the list. As it appears from his 1693 essay in Miscellanea curiosa, unlike Jacques Vaucanson with his duck, Reisel wished to build the Statua but he did not actually do so rather, he discussed the most appropriate materials for its construction, such as the skeleton of wood or iron, the blood vessels near the heart of elder- tree, and, as Luigi Belloni has emphasized, the pineal gland of conical glass or crystal held by a silk thread inside a spherical glass globe. Reisel's remarkable plates show the kidneys, bladder, sphincter, penis, and larynx. Reisel discussed digestion and the filtration of urine but his primary aim was to convince the skeptics of the truth of the circulation of the blood, which he illustrated with the detail of blood squirting out of openings in the foot and hand. It would be reductive to take Malpighi's examples as mere marvels or even instantiations of anatomical structures. It has not been sufficiently appreciated that Malpighi framed his examples as part of a general reflection on pathology as well as physiology, thus extending the notion of nature's uniformity from machines to organs and from healthy to diseased states. Malpighi's anatomical publications and medical consultations display h … [Click Below for Full Description]

» (Sgard). Sgard n° 1016.

Groenveldt (Groenevelt), Joannes (Greenfeld, John)
Londoni, Typis Joannis Bringhurst, 1684, 12°, (16), 137 pp., 1 p. Errata, 1 p., 6 gfefalt. Rare first Edition of this important book on lithotomy! Groenvelt, Joannes (bap. 1648, d. 1715/16), physician and surgeon, was baptized on 14 May 1648 in the Reformed church of Deventer in the Dutch province of Overijssel; he was the only surviving son of Frans Groenevelt and Goedekin ter Klocken. In mid-January 1666 he matriculated into the well-regarded local 'Illustre School'; in September 1667 he matriculated in medicine at the University of Leiden. Apparently because of the epidemic that occurred in Leiden at the end of the summer of 1669, which forced the university to close for a time, Groenevelt migrated to Utrecht to complete his medical studies, defending his thesis, 'De calculo vesicae', and taking his degree, on 18 March 1670. Perhaps after a visit to France, Groenevelt moved to Amsterdam, where he joined the Collegium Medicum and married Cristina de Ruijter (c.1650-1713) on 4 March 1672. He also entered into a joint practice with the Amsterdam city surgeon Henricus Velthuys, who had an especially good reputation for surgically removing bladder stones. When Velthuys died in May 1674 he left his instruments to Groenevelt, and urged him to take up surgical practice himself. Groenevelt may have served as physician to the newly liberated Dutch garrison at Grave in October 1674. Then, late in the year, or early in 1675, he and his wife arrived in London. On 5 May 1675 their first child … [Click Below for Full Description]

SOLORZANO, Father Manuel de
Agaña (Mariana Islands) 1684 - Folio, 4 pp., manuscript in ink on paper, about 1500 words, written in a neat hand; in fine condition preserved in a bookform case by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. An exceptionally interesting manuscript, in which Father Solorzano, a Jesuit missionary in the Mariana Islands, gives news of the work accomplished by the Mariana Islands Mission, and discusses plans for the missionaries to explore and evangelise the southern continent. The plan is clearly reminiscent of Quiros' memorials about seventy years earlier. In the 1660s Spanish Jesuit missionaries set out to colonise the Mariana Islands, which until then had been called the Ladrones - named thus by Magellan for the thievery of the native inhabitants. Father Solorzano was one of the earliest casualties in what became a vicious struggle between the Spanish settlers and the native peoples of the islands: three months after the date of this letter he was killed in a skirmish and became one of the first martyrs.'Meanwhile, Duchess Maria d'Aveiro, who had already more or less adopted the mission, saw to it that the necessary flow of ducats was continued from Madrid to the Marianas. She was repaid with abundant letters full of detailed information on the Church's progress in those regions. Her archives, which must have been a historian's goldmine, contained many manuscripts dealing with ecclesiastical and colonial affairs. In 1923, however, they were sold to Maggs Brothers and subsequently dispersed?' (Francis X. Hezel). This is one of that small series of letters written by Solorzano to the mission's p … [Click Below for Full Description]

BUONANNI, Filippo.

Arminio, Joan. Uytenbogardo, Conr. Vorstio [.] Pref. a Philippo à Limborch. Editio secunda. Mit gest. Titelvignette. 6 Blatt, 978 S., 5 Blatt Index. Pergamentband der Zeit. Index etwas gebräunt. Sonst sehr gut erhalten. [Click Below for Full Description]

Titolo inciso al taglio di piede. Frontespizio in rosso e in nero con impresa tipografica con la Fortuna, Ercole e Minerva entro cornice con motto su nastro "Semina fortunae geminat cum tempore virtus". Testo bicolonne. Ex-libris manoscritto antico ("Lud.[ovi]ci Perrachini"). Altro ex-libris novecentesco. Fioriture e bruniture sparse. Piccoli restauri al dorso. Buon esemplare. [Click Below for Full Description]
