        Bunraku Puppet Theater

perhaps, Japan and America, c. 1920s. Hardcover. Very Good+. Cloth, colored illustration of Bunraku puppet heads mounted to "front" board (if proceeding as though this were a Japanese text); oblong 8vo (279x191 mm); continas two colored woodcuts of costumed puppets and 17 mounted silver prints showing 40 traditional puppet heads used in the Bunraku theater. Images range from 76x102 to 102x140 mm, and are faced by mounted text in Japanese, plus tipped-in handwritten English translations (spelling suggests America) recording the characters, notes, moving parts, and role each puppet plays. The first page reads, "To Dear Miss E. V. Ambrose / To Remember / R. Imai." Boards lightly rubbed, with some light chipping along the edge of upper board's mounted illustration. Only the first photograph is missing, otherwise contents are fine. Bunraku is a blend of storytelling and puppetry, first developed in Osaka in 1684, and achieving its peak popularity in the 18th century. The puppets are large, usually about half the size of the puppeteer. The main puppeteer wears bright robes and can easily be seen on stage, while his assistants wear black.

This is not a bilingual edition. Text in French only, not in English. First edition. 7.25 x 4.75 inches. Brown tree calf binding, possibly contemporary but more likely late 18th century. Hubbed spine with six compartments, with gilt-stamped lettering and design. Small losses at spine head and tail, minor. Mild rubbing to the boards. The rounded corners are moderately bumped. The textblock feels firmly bound in although the hinges are cracked. All edges in a speckled red and brown pattern. [5] 6-15, 415, [1] pages. With engraved vignette to title page, with headpieces, tailpieces and embellished capitals, and, most significantly, with approximately 355 woodcut illustrations of emblems. The pages display age toning and scattered spots of soiling, with some tidewater marks in the upper right corner of several pages. The handsome armorial bookplate of Theodore Pagan is on the front pastedown and a bookplate from Arthur Mullin is affixed to the opposite FEP. Else a clean and presentable copy. This is a handsome volume in remarkably good condition for its age. Rare in any condition. This volume is an early French emblem book; not a later edition of the author's "L'art des emblêmes," Lyon, l662, but a different work about emblems, their design and meaning. From Wikipedia: "Ménestrier [1631-1705] was a French heraldist, a member of the Society of Jesus [Jesuit], a numismatist and antiquary, and attendant of the royal court.... He composed numerous books on heraldry, in which he was one of the greatest authorities of his age.... Ménestrier maintained that we can know the essence of heraldry only from the sources from the age of living heraldry but he was also influenced by the heraldic view of his age.". First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good Minus. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Cours élémentaire de paléontologie et de géologie stratigraphiques.Paris, Victor Masson, 1849-1852. 2 text volumes (8vo) and 1 table volume (4to). With 628 mostly woodengraved figures in text (except for 1 folding cross-section) and 17 numbered tables (16 folding). Volumes 1 and 2 in contemporary half morocco. Volume 3 (tables) in original printed paper wrappers with green cloth spine.

DSB X, pp. 221-222; Ward 1684; D.A. Young, Geological evidence for the age of the earth, p. 109. Complete first edition, including the often lacking tables, of a standard work on stratigraphy and paleontology by the famous Alcide d'Orbigny (1801-1857), "perhaps the most accomplished French paleontologist of the generation following Cuvier" (Young). In this work "he subdivided the Cretaceous System into 'stages', based on the notion that a typical fauna would be annihilated and replaced by a new fauna" (Young). He based his new classification of fossils on his research on geological strata, establishing the vital link between paleontology and stratigraphic geology that has proved so fruitful for both disciplines. Many contemporary geologists opposed his stratigraphic ideas, but despite this controversy he was appointed professor of paleontology at the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris in 1853. The work contains numerous woodengraved illustrations by E. Salle, which show an enormous variety of plant and animal fossils, from tiny invertebrates to gigantic dinosaurs. In very good condition, with only some faint foxing on the first and last few pages. Bindings of the text volumes slightly rubbed along the extremities and worn along the corners; paper wrappers of the tables slightly soiled, but still in good condition.

Gazophylacium linguae Persarum, triplici linguarum clavi italicae, latinae, gallicae, nec non specialibus praeceptis ejusdem linguae reseratum. Amsterdam, Ex Officina Janson-Waesberg, 1684.

1684 1684 - Folio. Pp. (xviii), 18, 473, (1), index (38). With engraved front or extra title, title printed in red and black. Some minor staining. Uncut copy in contemporary boards, red calf spine. worn. Preserved in a modern blue cloth box. The first proper Persian dictionary to be published. Only preceded by Ravius' Specimen lexici arabico-persico-latini (Lugd. Bat. 1645) and the Persian section by Golius in Castell's Lexicon heptaglotton (London 1669). Includes an introduction mainly based on De Dieu. The dictionary entries are in Italian followed by translations into Latin, French and Persian respectively. Labrosse composed this work during a stay in the Levant between 1664 and 1679. He tried to have his work published in Paris without success but a few years later he arranged the printing himself in Amsterdam. Labrosse bought the small Arabic types used in this work at the Elzevier sale in 1681. The large Arabic types found on the title page and eight times within the text were cut by Guillaume Le Bé in Paris 1599. These types were used only occasionally in Paris until the end of the 18th century and it seems that this is the only time they were used outside France (Smitskamp). Schwab 672. Smitskamp PO 345.         The Observator in Dialogue.

London: Printed by J. Bennet for William Abington, 1684-87.. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Three volumes bound as two. Folio, unpaginated. Volume I, pp.[16]; followed by 470 sheets (including two extra sheets from larger issues), with nos. 471-73 bound into volume II. Volume II, pp.[12]; [6]; followed by sheets numbered 4 to 215. Volume III, pp.40; [4]; followed by 246 sheets. This adds up to all 931 sheets published. All three volumes have an arbitrarily arranged index preceding the main text, while volumes I and III also contain a preface, and volume III contains a potted history of the period. With a frontispiece copper engraving of the author by R. White, after a portrait by Godfrey Kneller. Also with an extract from Macaulay's 'History of England' neatly copied in black ink to front free endpaper of volume I. Recently re-backed, using original boards and title labels. In full brown calf with raised bands, gilt titles to original red labels on spines, and blind decoration to boards. Blind stamps of the American Congregational Association to title page of each volume. Bookplate of Silas Ketchum Hopkinton, as well as another bookplate bearing a coronet and the letter C, to front pastedown of each volume. Light browning throughout, most leaves brittle. One large tear to sheet 209 in volume I, gently repaired. One small worm hole towards the top of the sheets of volume I, from sheet 295 to end. Text unaffected. One large tear to sheet 4 of volume II, vertical near the binding. On sheet 78 of volume II the phrase 'Monarchy is anarchy ' has been corrected by hand to read 'Liberty is anarchy'. Original boards heavily worn; pleasingly restored with a new spine to a usable condition. Good overall. Addressed to 'the IGNORANT, the SEDITIOUS, or the SCHISMATICAL Reader...', the Observator was an irregular, broadly bi-weekly, pamphlet printed on both sides of a single sheet of paper in two columns. L'Estrange's forceful propaganda takes the form of a dialogue between a Tory and a Whig (Observator and Trimmer), the former lambasting the latter's ill-conceived opinions, delivered with a strongly anti-Catholic sentiment, but equally critical of Titus Oats' Popish Plot - seemingly everyone except the King himself presenting themselves as a potential target. Though he was an uncompromising Royalist throughout the Civil War, being imprisoned for espionage in 1644, L'Estrange was also an ardent Protestant, eventually receiving a pardon and returning to England, where he was immediately useful in censoring John Milton. Following the Restoration L'Estrange became a sort of Inquisitor-in-Chief, overseeing the output of the nation's presses with terrifying efficiency and severity throughout the 1660s and '70s. Having produced Observator from the political wilderness during the 1680s, L'Estrange's career was ended permanently by the Glorious Revolution of 1688, and he retired to more scholarly pursuits for the remainder of his long life.

1684. 4to. (2), "31" (= 29), (1) pp. With engraved frontispiece (an allegory of the 1683 Ottoman defeat) and headpieces. Side-stitched in modern wrappers, green edges. Rare pamphlet describing two dreams supposedly predicting the fall of the Ottoman Empire. It was written by the German composer and novelist Daniel Speer (1636-1707) under the pseudonym "Designante Somniatore" and opens with some remarks on prophetic dreams with reference to the Old Testament. Speer's pamphlet, written immediately after the 1683 Battle of Vienna, expresses a deep-seated fear of the Ottoman Empire, which, thrusting into the heart of Europe, seemed a serious threat to Christianity. Contemp. calf, spine rebacked. Rare first collected edition of Tavernier's works, profusely illustrated with a fold-out map of the Arabian Gulf, an unusual, large map of Japan, and a fold-out map of the Great Moghul. Comprising: 1) The First Book of Monsieur Taverner's [!] Persian Travels; 2) The Six Trabels of John Baptista Tavernier [...] Through Turky and Persia to the Indies: 3) A Relation of Japon; 4) A New and Particular Relation of the Kingdom of Tunquin; 5) A New Relation of the Inner-Part of the Grand Seignor's Seraglio; 6) The History of the Late Revolution of the Dominions of the Great Mogol. A rare and interesting account of Turkey, Persia, India, Japan, Tonkin, and Formosa. "The Persian Gulf is the most dangerous Gulf I know, by reason of the shallowness and sharp promontories that point out into Sea [...] The Merchant would be glad to find a way through the Coast of Arabia to get to Mascate [...] Elcatif a Sea Town in Arabia, where there is a fishery for Pearls that belong to the Emir of Elcatif" (pt. I, p. 95; "Qatif" being an oasis in Saudi Arabia). Chapter XI (p. 49) of the first part deals with the breeding and nature of camels; chapter III (p. 64) mentions a voyage to Mecca; chapter XXIII (p. 255) deals with the island of Ormus (with the map of the Arabian Gulf). - The second part begins with a discussion of Arabian currency and is illustrated with plates of Arabian coinage. The most important story is perhaps that of "The Imam of Muscat Pearl - That Surpassed in Beauty All Other Pearls in the World". In chapter XVIII of book II, "Of Pearles and the places where to find them" (p. 145), Tavernier states: "In the first place, there is a Fishery for Pearls in the Persian Gulf, round about the Island of Bakren. It belongs to the King of Persia, and there is a strong Fort in it, Garrison'd with three hundred men." Tavernier then narrates: "There is a wondrous Pearl in the possession of an Arabian Prince, that took Mascate from the Portugals. He then call'd himself Imenhect Prince of Masscaté; being known before only by the name of Aceph Ben-Ali Prince of Norennaé. It is but a small Province, but it is the best of all in the Happy Arabia. Therein grow all things necessary for the life of man; particularly, delicate fruits, but more especially most excellent Grapes, which would make most incomparable Wine. This Prince has the most wonderful Pearl in the world, not so much for its bigness, for it weighs not above twelve Carats and one sixteenth, nor for its perfect roundness, but because it is so clear and so transparent that you may almost see through it. The Great Mogul offer'd him by a Banian forty thousand Crowns for his Pearl, but he would not accept it." The use of the phrase "clear and lustrous as to appear translucent" seem to indicate a white or colorless pearl, the most sought-after color in pearls, with an optimum of lustre and orient caused by the reflection and refraction of light, respectively. The surface quality of the pearl must be exceptional and almost blemish-free in order to characterize it as a specimen surpassing in beauty all other pearls in the world, at that time. The fact that the pearl was in the possession of the Imam of Muscat in the mid-17th century indicates without any doubt that the pearl originated in the most ancient pearl fishing grounds in the world, the Arabian Gulf, most probably in the kingdom of Oman itself, at its very doorstep - on the pearl banks situated closer to the country's shoreline in the Gulf or the Strait of Hormuz. Oyster bearing reefs were well distributed throughout the Gulf, but were greater in abundance on the Arabian side of the Gulf than the Persian one. The pearls are depicted on a plate opposite page 150: "Figure one is of a Pearl which the King of Persia bought at the Fishery of Catifa in Arabia. It cost him 32,000 Tomans, or 1,400,000 Livres of our Money, at forty-six Livres and six Deneers to a Toman. It is the fairest and most perfect Pearl that ever was yet found to this hour, having no defect". Blackmer 1632. Wing T251A, T252, T253. Campbell (Japan) 28. Cox I, 275f. OCLC 6071990. Cf.         The Oxford Almanack for the Year of our Lord God 1685.

Printed on linen, engraved surface 525 x 450 to platemark, a few brown spots, mostly in the margins, 625 x 570mm to edge of mount, with approx. 10mm folded over, framed and glazed The first Oxford Almanack appeared in 1673. There was none in 1675, making this the eleventh in a series which has otherwise been published annually for well over 300 years. They were from the beginning produced in largish numbers, though those printed 'upon Cloath' were necessarily fewer. Whether on paper or cloth (early on issued as silk handkerchiefs), their ephemeral nature has entailed a low survival rate, and an example as early as this, is rare indeed. Dr. Fell took an interest in these productions, and this was the penultimate one in which he was involved.'On the left, on a plinth, a figure in classical armour, trampling on his enemies, is crowned by Victory. On the right is a group of figures, including a seated woman with a book and another writing the eclipses for the year on a scroll. Neptune stands in his chariot behind. In the distance is a view of Oxford [from Loggan, Oxonia illustrata, 1675, with Tom Tower added]. Oxford was at this time strongly Tory, High Church, and monarchist, and the portrayal of the triumph of Charles II over his enemies may reflect the University's enthusiastic loyalty to the Crown following the Rye House Plot in 1683 ... The group on the plinth is from the engraving by Villamena after Goelius of the statue of Moschino ... with the head changed to a portrait of Charles II' (Peter, The Oxford Almanacks, p. 34). The head is somewhat awkwardly placed.

Full-page engraved portraits at opening of each Life. (Some occasional spotting and edgewear, occasional tear crossing text.) Contemporary blind-panelled English calf, worn and with old amateur cloth rebacking, text block loose in binding. THE AUTHOR OF "ROCK OF AGES," AND CALVINIST OPPONENT OF JOHN WESLEY. AUGUSTUS MONTAGUE TOPLADY'S COPY, with his lengthy indices in manuscript on the pastedowns and ownership inscription on a slip pasted above the Dedication: "È Libris Augusti Toplady: Empt. Londini, Maii de 15to 1761." Annotated throughout on some 72 leaves, often with extensive theological and historical commentary. This volume provides passage into Toplady's theology, that began with the vehement anti-Wesley stance he developed in 1758 after reading Thomas Manton's 17th-century sermon on John 17 and Jerome Zanchius's Confession of the Christian Religion (1562). The present volume, annotated by Toplady the year after his graduation from Trinity College, Dublin, provides great insight into the theologian's early thinking, as he reads and responds - at times with great emotion - to Cave's lives of the Saints. Toplady wrote his famous hymn "Rock of Ages" two years later, in 1763. Material in Toplady's hand is exceedingly scarce: only one letter has sold at auction in at least the last 50 years. This was a one-page letter to W.P. Lunnell meditating on the love of God and the salvation of the Elect, and quoting from Wesley´s hymn "God of all consolation" (sold Bonham's 2009 in the Ennys collection, £780 ($1,399) hammer). Toplady's copy of the second edition of Newton's Principia, sold for £8,750 at Bonham's in 2014.
