1681. Woodcut Medici arms on title. 8 p.l., 68, [4] pp. Large 4to, cont. calf, arms in gilt of Nicolas Joseph Foucault on covers, spine gilt, contrasting morocco lettering piece on spine. Florence: Santi Franci, 1681. First edition of Baldinucci's biographical history of Italian art and architecture from 1260 to 1300. The author's son, Francesco Saverio Baldinucci, edited the remaining five volumes published in the years 1686-1728 and covering the period 1300 to 1670. This is a very handsome copy from the library of Nicolas Joseph Foucault (1643-1721), statesman and archeologist, with his arms in gilt on the covers and his armorial bookplate. Baldinucci's work was based on published sources as well as original research with unpublished manuscripts and documents and is considered by Cicognara to be a worthy successor to Vasari. Fine and crisp copy. ? Brunet, I, 622-"Cet ouvrage est difficile à trouver complet.". [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[bound with:] Dapper, Olfert: BESCHREIBUNG DES KONIGREICHS PERSIEN IN SICH HALTEND DIE LANDSCHAFFTEN FARS.... Nurnberg: Johann Hoffmans, 1681. [2],170,[5]pp. plus eleven plates (eight of them double-page) and three double-page maps. Text printed in double columns. Extra engraved titlepage in first work. Folio. Contemporary vellum, initials and date stamped in gilt on front board, manuscript title at head of spine. Light scattered foxing and tanning. Very good. The first German edition of Dapper's important compilations of travels in Asia and Persia, following the first Amsterdam edition of 1672. Olfert Dapper (1639-89) was a Dutch physician and indefatigable scholar and compiler of travel accounts. Though he apparently never left Amsterdam, Dapper produced several finely illustrated volumes describing travels in Asia, Asia Minor, the Middle East, and Africa. Culled from a variety of accounts, his works were very popular, and are especially noteworthy for their excellent illustrations and maps. The first title in the present volume describes travels in Asia and contains several detailed illustrations of Hindu and Buddhist myths, as well as Indian natives and port scenes. There is also a double- page map of "Indostan," showing the Indian subcontinent. Much of the text relates travels in India, though there are also sections on Kabul and Kandahar. The second title relates travels in Persia and includes a double- page map showing the area encompassing … [Click Below for Full Description]

(BARBERINI, Francesco, Cardinal)
Engraved vignette on title & another - emblematic - vignette on final leaf of Vol. II. 2 p.l., 646 pp., one leaf with the Barberini arms, otherwise blank; 2 p.l., 596 pp. Two vols. Folio, cont. vellum over boards. Rome: Typis Barberinis, Excudebat M. Hercules, 1681. The rare catalogue of the vast library created by the enormously rich Cardinal Francesco Barberini (1597-1679), a great patron of the arts due to his status as one of the chief beneficiaries of the exorbitant nepotism practiced by his uncle Pope Urban VIII. The cardinal built a rich library at the Palazzo Barberini which included ancient Greek and Roman manuscripts, and he supported numerous European intellectuals, scholars, scientists and artists including Jean Morin, Gabriel Naudé, Gerhard Johann Vossius, Heinsius and John Milton. "The Barberini library, which was catalogued in 1681 (the catalogue of manuscripts that was to form the third volume was never published), remained in private hands until 1902, when it passed into the Vatican library. Such acquisitions of private libraries by institutions are especially characteristic of Italian library history. The Barberini catalogue has enjoyed a special importance because it is a rather early and very large book and appears to have been widely circulated."-Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 23. Taylor describes this catalogue as "virtually unobtainable" (p. 228) and considers it an important work in bibliographical history (p. 129). The catalogue is alphabetically arranged and contains more than 60,000 books.Barberini's catalogue was for many years one … [Click Below for Full Description]

[AUTOGRAPH]. HEIDE, Anton(ius) de and Robertus ALTIUS.
Three signed autograph letters mostly discussing medical matters, the first written on 2 October 1681 beginning with comments about Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) and his recent discovery of blood cells. All three letters were written to the physician Theodorus Janssonius van Almeloveen (1657-1712), the first two from the physician and medical researcher Anton de Heide and the third from the Dutch Reformed preacher Robertus Altius (ca. 1650?-1699). De Heide and Van Almeloveen were leading physicians of their day and De Heide published works that included information about blood and blood circulation in the years 1682 to 1686. After the comments about Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, De Heide goes on to discuss other medical matters, referring to the Dutch-born court physician at Berlin Cornelis Bontekoe (ca. 1645?-1685) and the London scientist and founder of modern chemistry Robert Boyle (1627-1691).The second letter begins with references to the surveying of a river on Walcheren, then still an island, where De Heide lived in the city of Middelburg. It goes on to discuss medical matters, including the spread of an animal epidemic from Germany to the Netherlands. He also refers to the classical Greek physician Rufus Ephesius (active ca. 100 AD).Altius's rather chatty letter refers to Cleopatra's banquet and to Hercules.De Heide's 1681 letter discussing Van Leeuwenhoek is in very good condition and his other letter (of 1681/87) is also very good except that it has a small stain affecting but not obscuring a few words and is somewhat dirty. The 1697 letter is browned and has some … [Click Below for Full Description]

Velasco, Tomás de.
Por la Viuda de Bernardo Calderon, 1681. Here for the first time a Mexican explains the reasoning behind "Sanctissimus Dominus," the papal bull that Innocent XI issued in 1679 condemning => 65 propositions that had been examined by the Inquisition and found to be contrary to the tenets and teachings of the Church. The Roman Catholic Church believed that the condemned propositions favored a liberal approach to moral theology, many of them being based in probabilism, a path of reasoning followed by the Jesuits -- a path totally rejected by the conservative orders such as the Augustinians, and definitely rejected by the Dominicans who dominated the Holy Office. Velasco presents the condemned concepts (printed in italic type) one by one and then explains why each has been condemned by the Inquisition. He was a Franciscan and "Lector de Visperas de Theología . . . en esta Nueva-España." The twelve-page appendix contains 45 propositions that Pope Alexander VII had condemned, here with summaries of what other writers had done to explain the reasoning for their condemnation. The propositions were mostly Jansenist. The work is from the press of one of Mexico's famed "widow printers," Paula Benavides, the widow of Bernardo Calderon. Sole edition. Provenance: Undated (late 17th- or early 18th-century) ownership inscription of the Convent of San Antonio of Queretaro on the verso of the title-page, faded. Partial marca de fuego on top edge, undeciphered because it is so partial. Via NUC and WorldCat we locate only two copies in U.S. libraries, but we know of a third. [Bible Collection].
1681. Significant collection of 333 Bibles, expositions, scriptural lessons, biblical school primers, and other extremely rare products of missionary presses. Many items unrecorded in Darlow & Moule, and several important 19th century works unrecorded in the OCLC database of worldwide libraries. The collection's main strengths lie in 19th and early 20th century publications produced for/in Africa and India (some 89 Indian and 58 African works) as well as hundreds of 20th century works in almost 80 further languages, ranging from Rarotongan to Miskito. Generally in original or period bindings and often with ownership markings of missionary societies, the collection paints a fascinating picture of missionary efforts of the 19th and 20th centuries. Highlights include an extremely rare edition of the New Testament printed in Tranquebar, South India in the Tamil language in 1758 by a Danish missionary, Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg (this very copy fetching nearly $4000 at Sotheby's in 2000) and a wonderful color-illustrated edition of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress translated into the Niger-Congo (Dualla) language in 1885. - More than simply offshoots of the colonial enterprise, missionary movements set up their own presses in colonies such as Cameroon and Calcutta and began printing titles such as the present ones, usually in runs of 1000 or less. These publications often represent the first appearance of native languages in print form, shaping future efforts at graphic and textual representation of mainly spoken languages. Interestingly, many of the present volumes also represent the … [Click Below for Full Description]
