Moseh Mendez Coutinho, Amsterdam, 1681. Duodecimo. 6.5x4.5". [8] 347pp. [1] 401-611pp. [8]. Original dark brown pebbled leather boards. Gauffered and gilt edges. Title page illustrated with decorative woodblock floral motifs bordering the text. The publication is an early Spanish-language Jewish daily prayer book (siddur), which also includes prayers for various Jewish Holidays including the Sabbath, Hannukah, Purim, and the Shalosh Regalim (Three Pilgrimage Festivals: Passover, Sukkot and Shavuot). Also included are the Torah portions (Parshiot) and Haftorot to be read on those occasions. This prayer book was published by Moseh Mendez Coutinho following a similar title and formatting to a number of other earlier editions dating back to the 1681 publication by David Tartas. Starting with Tartas' subsequent edition from 1690, these book also included the torah portions and haftorot. This and other publications of Jewish liturgy served members of the then sizable Sephardic Jewish community in Amsterdam. A significant portion of the community would have been ex-Marranos (Jews, who had outwardly converted to Catholicism during the inquisition in Spain, who then immigrated and were able to reestablished their Jewish identity), and thus were unable to read Hebrew, hence the text's publication in Spanish. The first section contains a few prayers transliterated into Spanish from the Hebrew, followed by daily prayers (p.9-134), Sabbath prayers (p.134-262), prayers for Rosh-Hodesh (Celebration of the new month, p.262-309) and Hanukkah, Purim and others (309-347). MARVELL, Andrew.
1681. London: Printed for Robert Boulter at the Turks-Head, 1681. Folio. Contemporary blind stamp panelled sheep, recently rebacked by Bernard Middleton, spine with leather label lettered in gilt; pp. Engraved portrait frontispiece, [iv] 1-116, 131-139. Some scuffing to boards, rubbing to edges and corners, a few small old worm holes in lower gutters, some paper repairs by Bernard Middleton, a little light browning and a few occasional light spots, otherwise a very good copy, preserved in custom made fleece-lined cloth box lettered in gilt on spine and upper board. First edition, without the Cromwellian verses as usual (pp.117-130). One of the great collections of English poetry. Miscellaneous Poems was sent to the press by 'Mary Marvell' (Mary Palmer, Marvell's housekeeper) who claimed that she was Marvell's widow. The volume 'includes religio-philosophical dialogues; verses on the pleasures (both sensuous and spiritual) of the retired life in pastoral surroundings; poems that depict innocence on the verge of sexual maturity; love lyrics, from the classic persuasion of 'To his Coy Mistress' to the dark complaint of 'The Unfortunate Lover'; and some Latin epigrams and epitaphs. Almost the only public response to such late-appearing metaphysical poems is Wood's grudging statement that the volume was 'cried up as excellent' by those of the author's own persuasion (Wood, Ath. Oxon., 4.232)' (W. H. Kelliher in ODNB). In all but two known copies, (Dobell-Thorn Drury- British Library and Huntington) three long poems in praise of Cromwell are suppressed by the cancellatio … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Penn
John EdgeÕs home on this plot of land was later used as a Quaker meeting house for yearsKing Charles II owed William Penn £16,000, money which Penn's late father Admiral Sir William Penn had lent him. Penn was an outspoken member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), and seeking a haven in the New World for persecuted Friends, Penn asked the King, instead of a cash payment, to grant him land in the territory between Lord Baltimore's province of Maryland and the Duke of York's province of New York. The King was delighted not to have to come up with the cash, and with the Duke's support Penn's petition was granted. The King signed the Charter of Pennsylvania on March 4, 1681, and it was officially proclaimed on April 2. The King named the new colony in honor of William Penn's father. Penn then set about finding people to help him populate these areas, and he did so by selling tracts of land. By July 1681, Penn announced his plan of land distribution, and his first land sale followed.John Edge was born December 20, 1648 in Little Barrow, Cheshire, England. Edge became an early follower of the Quaker faith and moved to Middlesex County just west of London. In 1680 he was cited for not attending the Church of England for some thirteen months. Shortly thereafter he was imprisoned at the jail at Newgate for ten weeks. Edge took up the invitation of Penn to come join his colony in America and be free of religious persecution. He purchased 125 acres of lands from Penn by deed on March 21, 1682, which was just a few months after grants of lands commenced.Edge did not go to Pennsylvani … [Click Below for Full Description]
