VISSCHER II, NICOLAES
"Moscoviae seu Russiae Magnae Generalis Tabula qu? Lapponia, Norvegia Suecia, Dania, Polonia, Maximaeque partes Germaniae, Tartariae, Turcici Imperii, aliaeque Regiones adjacentes simul ostenduntur; de novo correcta et edita. Prijs: E … [Click Below for Full Description]

Although he took a great deal of material from other writers, the most valuable part of this chronicle is a detailed description of the city of Lima in the 17th century. This included an inventory of corporations, churches and convents. The style is clear and concise. He was subsequently was appointed regent of the Colegio de la Minerva, in spite of the provision of its founder, Juan Solano, that the position be held by a religious from Spain. The beginning of the third chapter is dated X calendas Martii (20 February) 1681. - Vellum of upper cover repaired; a very well-preserved, well-legible specimen.

Jean La Chapelle
London: The title page lists this as being 'the second and last part', dated 1683 only, however, the pagination and further titles indicate that it contains both the first part of 1681 and the second and third parts of 1683. 'Printed for R. Bentley, at the Post-House in Russel-Street, near the Piazza in Covent-Garden'. With a publisher's catalogue to the rear of 'Plays printed for R. Bentley'. Jean de La Chapelle (24 October 1651 - 29 May 1723) was a French writer and dramatist. A minor nobleman, the nephew of Boileau, his literary talents made him stand out to the Prince of Conti to whom he became a private secretary in 1678. Marie of Anjou (14 October 1404 - 29 November 1463) was the Queen consort of King Charles VII of France from 1422 to 1461. Marie was the eldest daughter of Louis II of Anjou, titular King of Naples, titular King of Sicily, and Yolande of Aragon, titular Queen of Aragon. She married her second cousin King Charles VII in April 1422 at Bourges and became Queen consort of Charles, although Charles himself was not crowned King until 17 July 1429 at Reims, following the successful endeavors of Joan of Arc in expelling the English from most of France. Her husband's victory in the Hundred Years War owed a great deal to the support he received from Marie's family, notably from her mother Yolande of Aragon. In a half calf binding. Externally sound, although rubbed, with marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with some mild damp staining. There is slight loss to the title page, and significant loss to page 1, affecting a good deal of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Senor, Official de Estado....." 1681, Madrid, por Melchor Alvarez. An extraordinarily rare book, as I find no copies listed for sale and only a handful listed in university libraries. Don Antonio de Solis wrote one of the most significant histories of the Spanish conquest of Mexico, which is also quite scarce and valuable and was published in 1684. Solis (1610-1686), a Spanish poet and dramatist (and friend of Calderón), became secretary to Carlos II and succeeded Antonio de Leon Pinelo as official "Cronista mayor de Indias." This copy is in extremely nice condition but does show wear to the boards and light rubbing to the corners. It is in a period binding with gilt which continues to be bright on the spine, neutral endpapers and a tight and clean textblock with very little discoloration or foxing. There are two private bookplates to the front endpapers, otherwise no markings. The pages have been trimm … [Click Below for Full Description]

"I intended not only to oblige my friends, but Mine enemies also" ― John Gauden, Eikon Basilike The autobiography of King Charles I of England was published shortly after he was executed following the English Civil War. Known as 'Eikon Basilike,' this diary gives light to the life of the king, as well as prayers, and secrets of the English military that was led into the Civil War. While it is not certain that Charles I was the author or not, it is recognized as a work of Royalist propaganda and quite popular, even though it was highly disapproved of. This 1681 Royston printing features the expected allegorical frontispiece which depict Charles I as a Christian martyr. [Attributes: First Edition]

DUGDALE, William
1681 1ed Dugdale Troubles in England English Civil WAR French Wars of Religion William Dugdale was 17th-century English historian known for his works of antiquity of English aristocracy and monastics. While not his most notable work, ‘Troubles in England’ is a treatise written to describe the wars that influenced Europe and England during the 17th-century. Dugdale correlates three wars – English Civil War, Barons’ War, and the French Wars of Religion – and how they related to each other. Interestingly, the DNB notes that this work was “written throughout in a strain of animosity to all who took the anti-royalist side.” However, this work is notable for its accuracy. Andrew Marvell
First edition. Folio. 280x187mm. pp. [iv], 1-116; 131-139. The leaves containing the three Cromwellian poems have been cancelled, as usual. Engraved frontispiece portrait. Bound in brown morocco by Zaehnsdorf in 1888. Two line gilt border to upper and lower covers. Five raised bands to spine, compartments with the two line gilt border. Title lettered in gilt in second compartment. Lavishly decorated gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Very slight rubbing to head of spine but overall a superb binding in lovely condition. Bookplate of John Lehmann on the front pastedown. A further bookplate is on the rear pastedown. This is unidentified but the coat of arms may be of the Payne family. The contents are very good, with only slight soiling. The top corner of the title page has been expertly repaired. An excellent copy, in a beautiful nineteenth century binding. This copy of Marvell's posthumously published poems belonged to the late W.H.Kelliher, who, in addition to being a leading manuscript scholar at the British Museum was also an authority on Marvell. In 1978, he arranged, and wrote the catalogue for, an exhibition on tercentenary of the death of Marvell. He also wrote the ODNB entry on the poet. The inscription on Marvell's tomb in St Giles in the Fields, in Holborn describes him as displaying "an unutterable steadiness in the ways of Virtue". If the plotting of a careful path through the complexities of mid seventeenth-century English politics was the mark of virtue then Marvell was steadiness incarnate. His political poetry displayed support for Charles I and for Cromwell. … [Click Below for Full Description]
