Philip plisson
[Click Below for Full Description]

The Second Part of the Institutes of the laws of England: Containing the Exposition of Many Ancient, And Other Statutes, Whereof you May see the Particulars in a Table Following. London: Printed by W. Rawlins, for Thomas Basset, 1681. [xii], 744, [40] pp. Lacking portrait frontispiece. Folio (12-1/4" x 7-3/4"). Recent period style calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed. Light browning and occasional light foxing to text, light wear and moderate offsetting to margins of preliminaries and final leaves, title page partially detached. $750. * Sixth edition. The Second Part of the Institutes, an exposition of "many ancient and other statutes" including Magna Carta, was published by order of the House of Commons after the author's death. It is a landmark work because it offered a novel interpretation of Magna Carta. Reflecting contemporary struggles between the king and Parliament, Coke presented the charter as the ancient constitution of England, one that established the fundamental rights of Englishmen and placed royal power under the laws of the land. Perhaps the most famous section is Coke's commentary on the 29th chapter, in which he traced the origins of trial by jury and the right of habeas corpus. English Short-Title Catalogue R24771.

De Bry produced dozens of impressive illustrations of various aspects of Rome including iconic architecture and buildings, sculptures, art, and even city views. In this 1681 work 'Topographia Urbis Romae', de Bry illustrations are paired with text descriptions by Jean-Jacques Boissard. While all of the illustrations are beautiful, it should be noted that this work features an incredible engraving of the Roman Coliseum. [Attributes: First Edition]

Delaune, Thomas
London, 1681. [12],360,[382-]478pp., plus seventeen leaves of plates and numerous in-text illustrations. 12mo. Contemporary full calf, blind ruled, manuscript spine labels. Hinges cracked, spine heavily rubbed, edges and corners worn. Titlepage and frontispiece mounted, two gatherings loose. 19th-century gift inscription on front free endpaper, later manuscript list of plated tipped into rear endpapers. Moderate tanning, scattered foxing, an occasional stray ink mark. Lacking gathering R, as in many copies. Good. An uncommon guide to and history of London by the nonconformist and dissenter Thomas Delaune. Along with detailed descriptions and aetiologies of London's attractions, the volume contains a number of simple but attractive woodcuts depicting points of interest in the city. Ironically, these include an image of the Newgate, where Delaune and his family were imprisoned and died in 1685, after he had been convicted of sedition for one of his religious works, A PLEA FOR THE NON-CONFORMISTS (1683). The work also contains useful information for travellers such as an illustrated guide to the coats of arms of the various city trade guilds, and listings for transportation to and from the countryside. A popular work, it was reprinted twice, in 1683 and 1690. ESTC R216338. WING D894.

[Attributes: First Edition]

Your most affectionate Friends", 1 side folio, short title on conjugate leaf, Office of Ordnance, 27th February 1689, modern year reckoning small defects in blank top left corner and in blank portion of conjugate leaf near vertical fold The Ordnance Office, finally abolished in 1855, was founded in Tudor times for the Defence of the Realm. It was responsible for the nation's artillery, military engineering including fortifications, and supplies including ammunition. Though the Master of the Ordnance was usually a distinguished soldier, the Office reported to the Crown, not the Commander in Chief, and within the Civil Service grew to be second in size only to the Treasury. The Surveyor in particular had to see that fortifications were in order or to design new ones. At this time their chief was Frederick, 1st Duke of Schomberg, (Master, 18th April 1689, died 1st July 1690), who was campaigning in Ireland.
