DUGDALE, William
Oxford: at the Theater for M. Pitt, 1681. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. William Dugdale was 17th-century English historian known for his works of antiquity of English aristocracy and monastics. While not his most notable work, 'Troubles in England' is a treatise written to describe the wars that influenced Europe and England during the 17th-century. Dugdale correlates three wars - English Civil War, Barons' War, and the French Wars of Religion - and how they related to each other. Interestingly, the DNB notes that this work was "written throughout in a strain of animosity to all who took the anti-royalist side." However, this work is notable for its accuracy. GREW, N. (1681) Musæm Regalis Societatis, or a Catalog & Description of the Natural and Artificial Rarities belonging to the Royal Society and preserved at Gresham College. Published by W. Rawlins, London, for the author, 388 pp. (Modern brown half morocco, marbled end papers) Ex. Georges Cleghorn, as inscribed (1716-1789), a physician from Edinburgh Scholars, in the 1640s, would meet in London to discuss experimental science, which was still avant-garde at that time. Their "invisible College" became the Society of Philosophers, and with the King's approval, was officially recognized as the Royal Society in 1662. Following Francis Bacon (1561-1626), Father of the Scientific Method, members of the Society were called "Fellows" (or data gatherers and analysers, moving away from the deductive logic of Aristotle). Nehemiah Grew (1641-1712), who originated the field of Comparative Anatomy, became the curator of the museum and prepared its catalogue in 1681. The collection of the Royal Society can be considered as the first scientific repository, composed of animals, plants, minerals and man-made objects (relating to demonstration apparatuses for chemistry and physics, mechanics, coins and medicine). Although all sorts of curiosities were listed (e.g., Egyptian mummy, human foetus, leg bone of a dodo bird, lodestones, ...), the method deviated from previous catalogues of Renaissance cabinets of curiosities (wunderkammer), with descriptions not emphasising exotic and monstrous specimens. The entries were straightforward and matter-of-fact, giving detailed measurements and descript … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pitt, 1681. 1681 1ed Dugdale Troubles in England English Civil WAR French Wars of ReligionWilliam Dugdale was 17th-century English historian known for his works of antiquity of English aristocracy and monastics. While not his most notable work, 'Troubles in England' is a treatise written to describe the wars that influenced Europe and England during the 17th-century. Dugdale correlates three wars - English Civil War, Barons' War, and the French Wars of Religion - and how they related to each other. OVIDIUS NASO
1681. Engraved title and 150 numbered plates by Melchior Küsel (1626-84) after Johann Wilhelm Baur (1607-42). Oblong 4to (165 x 208mm). Contemporary mottled sheep, marbled endpapers, r.e. (spine expertly rebacked, corners restored). First edition of a fine series of plates illustrating Ovid's Metamorphoses adapted by the Augsburg engraver and publisher Melchior Küsel from the important barogue interpretations of Johann Wilhelm Baur, the Strasbourg miniature painter who had lived for many years in Rome and Italy. ?Baur's greatest work as an etcher was produced in Vienna in 1639?41: the 150 illustrations to Ovid?s Metamorphoses (preliminary drawings, Vaduz, Samml. Liechtenstein). Here he had finally found a subject that inspired him to original and individual creation. Even where he used other Ovid illustrations, such as those of Antonio Tempesta, he transformed them into something completely personal. His particular achievement lies in bringing the dramatic action to life ? As well as his own printed works, copies etched by Melchior Küsel of Augsburg, who must have owned many of the sketches left by Baur and published a collection of his designs entitled Iconographia (Augsburg, 1670), helped disseminate his works. Baur?s and Küsel?s etchings served as models for copies of all kinds: drawings, miniatures and ceiling paintings in Austrian palaces, as well as glass, enamel and porcelain painting.? J. E. von Borries, Grove Art Online (2003). There are two issues, at least, of Küsel's series, the majority of those listed on OCLC in Germany and elsewhere, and the version cited on … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fine copy, with only minor toning and light trace of water staining.- First edition. Very rare work justifying Portugal´s right to Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay), in the River Plate; “defends the rights of Portugal over the Colony ofSacramento, and reproduces the Tratado provisional of May 7, 1681” (Borba de Moraes). It ratifies the Portuguese claim to the territory on the left bank of the Rio de la Plata, an issue that remained cause of conflict until the first decades of Republican life in Argentina and Uruguay, and Empire in Brazil: “document d’une grande importance” (Leclerc). Contains the 17 articles of the peace treaty of Lisbon (1681), which orders the return to Governor Manuel Lobo the artillery taken at the fortress of Colonia, the restitution of people, the King of Portugal obliges himself to look into the behaviour of people from S. Paulo, and many other regulations as prohibition of trade either by land or sea between Buenos Aires and Brazil; at the end there is a recount of the history of explorations and shipwrecks in the River Plate region, Manuel Lobo, Governor of the Captaincy of Rio De Janeiro, officially founded the city in 1680, although previous Spanish settlements were located in the region. The city´s strategic location, in the opposite riverbank of Buenos Aires, gave military and commercial leverage to its occupier, thus extremely important geo-politically.
