MARVELL, Andrew.
Folio. Contemporary blind stamp panelled sheep, recently rebacked by Bernard Middleton, spine with leather label lettered in gilt. Pp. Engraved portrait frontispiece, [iv] 1-116, 131-139. Some scuffing to boards, rubbing to edges and corners, a few small old worm holes in lower gutters, some paper repairs by Bernard Middleton, a little light browning and a few occasional light spots, otherwise a very good copy, preserved in custom made fleece-lined cloth box lettered in gilt on spine and upper board. First edition, without the Cromwellian verses as usual (pp.117-130). One of the great collections of English poetry. Miscellaneous Poems was sent to the press by 'Mary Marvell' (Mary Palmer, Marvell's housekeeper) who claimed that she was Marvell's widow. The volume 'includes religio-philosophical dialogues; verses on the pleasures (both sensuous and spiritual) of the retired life in pastoral surroundings; poems that depict innocence on the verge of sexual maturity; love lyrics, from the classic persuasion of 'To his Coy Mistress' to the dark complaint of 'The Unfortunate Lover'; and some Latin epigrams and epitaphs. Almost the only public response to such late-appearing metaphysical poems is Wood's grudging statement that the volume was 'cried up as excellent' by those of the author's own persuasion (Wood, Ath. Oxon., 4.232)' (W. H. Kelliher in ODNB). In all but two known copies, (Dobell-Thorn Drury- British Library and Huntington) three long poems in praise of Cromwell are suppressed by the cancellation of 13 leaves.

[PATRICK, Simon.]
[16], 268, [4 ad's] pages. Full sheep, label to spine. 12mo. Spine expertly repaired, but binding generally rubbed and worn; else very good. Mary Ann Kilner's copy with her signature to endpaper, the author of many 18th century classic children's books, including, Memoirs of a Peg-Top, Jemima Placid, and The Adventures of a Pincushion. An inscription on the front endpaper in her hand reads: 'Exchanged Books with Mrs Worst at her request, June 19. 1813.' Another inscription on verso of same endpaper; 'E. and D Kilner Left to them by their Beloved Mary Ann when on her Death bed September 1816.' Loosely laid into the book is a note which reads, 'Advice to a Friend Simon Patrick D D written in 1673. 4th Edition 1681. Belonged first to Mrs Worst, then to M. A. Kilner. Then to E. & D. Kilner.' Mary Ann Kilner did not die until 1831, so the inscription by E. and D. Kilner is a little confusing. However. Mary Ann's signature is genuine, as is her inscription. The identity of E. & D. Kilner, could be her sister-in-law Dorothy who survived her by five years, and her daughter Eliza. Purchased from a descendent of the Kilner family.

AUTOGRAPH]. HEIDE, Anton(ius) de and Robertus ALTIUS.
, . . Three signed autograph letters mostly discussing medical matters, the first written on 2 October 1681 beginning with comments about Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) and his recent discovery of blood cells. All three letters were written to the physician Theodorus Janssonius van Almeloveen (1657-1712), the first two from the physician and medical researcher Anton de Heide and the third from the Dutch Reformed preacher Robertus Altius (ca. 1650?-1699). De Heide and Van Almeloveen were leading physicians of their day and De Heide published works that included information about blood and blood circulation in the years 1682 to 1686. After the comments about Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, De Heide goes on to discuss other medical matters, referring to the Dutch-born court physician at Berlin Cornelis Bontekoe (ca. 1645?-1685) and the London scientist and founder of modern chemistry Robert Boyle (1627-1691).The second letter begins with references to the surveying of a river on Walcheren, then still an island, where De Heide lived in the city of Middelburg. It goes on to discuss medical matters, including the spread of an animal epidemic from Germany to the Netherlands. He also refers to the classical Greek physician Rufus Ephesius (active ca. 100 AD).Altius's rather chatty letter refers to Cleopatra's banquet and to Hercules.De Heide's 1681 letter discussing Van Leeuwenhoek is in very good condition and his other letter (of 1681/87) is also very good except that it has a small stain affecting but not obscuring a few words and is somewhat dirty. The 1697 letter is browned and h … [Click Below for Full Description]

RAMSAY (Charles-Aloysius)

- How to sail in the Caribbean in the 18th century, a remarkable manuscript Derrotero for Puerto Rico, Havana, and other American ports. N.d. [early 18th century]. In 4to (232 mm x 178 mm). 1 [blank] + 68 ff. + 2 [blank]. Contemporary mottled calf, most likely Spanish, raised bands to spine, tooled in gilt, rubbed, joints worn and some worm damage, entirely genuine condition. Besides scattered foxing and occasional oxidation on the ink, in excellent condition. 28,000 $ An exceptional Spanish manuscript Derrotero, or a sailing guide, to the Caribbean Seas, for the Carrera de Indias; derroteros such as this were designed for pilots navigating ships in Spain’s trade with its transatlantic empire dominated by the Spanish treasure fleets from Peru and New Spain. Such manuscripts were considered objects of major importance, and thus worthy of the outmost secretive measures, in particular because of the greatest fear in open seas, piracy. The need for secrecy can be explained as the Derrotero includes the routes to be followed back and forth from Spanish possessions in the Caribbean, it would clearly be an invaluable asset for any adventurer in pursue of the treasure galleons. Inconspicuously bound with no indication of the contents, this volume contained instructions vital to pilots sailing to the Americas but which the Spanish had a vested interest in not publicizing to other European powers; in fact, such manuscripts were considered objects of major importance, invaluable assets for any adventurer in pursue of the treasure galleons, and thus worthy of the outmost secretive … [Click Below for Full Description]

8vo. (18), 52, (12), 86, (2), 89-162, (6), 78 pp., 1 bl. f., (12), 273, (1), 67, (3), 5-45, (17), 20 (instead of 24) pp. (wants two final leaves of text, including an engraving on p. 23, as well as final errata leaf, all supplied in facsimile). With engr. frontispiece (Witch of Endor) and engr. six-piece title page. Contemp. calf (wanting rear cover). Second edition. - Joseph Glanvill's famous book on witchcraft, which first appeared posthumously in 1681. The editor is presumed to have been Henry More, who certainly contributed to the volume. This second edition is the first to include topical material on witchcraft in Sweden, supplied by Anthony Horneck (from a Dutch pamphlet of 1670). The book affirms the existence of witches with malign supernatural powers of magic, and attacks skepticism concerning their abilities. Glanvill likens these skeptics to the Sadducees, members of a Jewish sect from around the time of Jesus who were said to have denied the immortality of the soul. The book is also noted for the account of the "Drummer of Tedworth", an early poltergeist story. "Saducismus Triumphatus" strongly influenced Cotton Mather in his "Discourse on Witchcraft" (1689) and the notorious witch trials held in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692/93. Mather's "Wonders of the Invisible World" (1693) is largely modeled after this book and its reports, particularly the material relating to the Mora witch trial of 1669. - Some browning as usual. Spine severely damaged; wants back cover and final 3 ff. Wing (2nd ed.) G823. Cf. Yale, Alchemy II, 501, no. 141.

1681. 8vo. (10), 56, (4), 370, (28) pp. Near contemporary vellum with giltstamped spine label. All edges sprinkled in red. First edition. The editor, Joseph Labrosse, "was born in Toulouse in 1636 and entered a Carmelite order, taking the name of Fr. Angelus of St Joseph. In 1662 he went to Rome and studied Arabic for two years before travelling to Isfahan to study Persian. While in Iran, he used medicine as a means of propagating Christianity and in the process read many Arabic and Persian books on medicine and 'visited the houses of the learned people of Isfahan and paid hundreds of visits to the shops of the druggists, the pharmacists, and the chemists.' After returning to France in 1678 he published his 'Pharmacopoea persica', which consisted of a Latin translation of a Persian book on compound remedies written in the previous century by Muzaffar ibn Muhammad al-Husayni (d. 1556), with additional comments by Labrosse" (in: I. Loudon [ed.], Western Medicine [1997], p. 52f.). Hyde (Biographia Britannica, cited by Langlès, Biographie universelle) asserts that the credit for this work really belongs to Père Matthieu. - Insignificant chipping to spine label.
