Derrotero, Carrera de Indias] [Caribbean].
- How to sail in the Caribbean in the 18th century, a remarkable manuscript Derrotero for Puerto Rico, Havana, and other American ports. N.d. [early 18th century]. In 4to (232 mm x 178 mm). 1 [blank] + 68 ff. + 2 [blank]. Contemporary mottled calf, most likely Spanish, raised bands to spine, tooled in gilt, rubbed, joints worn and some worm damage, entirely genuine condition. Besides scattered foxing and occasional oxidation on the ink, in excellent condition. 28,000 $ An exceptional Spanish manuscript Derrotero, or a sailing guide, to the Caribbean Seas, for the Carrera de Indias; derroteros such as this were designed for pilots navigating ships in Spain’s trade with its transatlantic empire dominated by the Spanish treasure fleets from Peru and New Spain. Such manuscripts were considered objects of major importance, and thus worthy of the outmost secretive measures, in particular because of the greatest fear in open seas, piracy. The need for secrecy can be explained as the Derrotero includes the routes to be followed back and forth from Spanish possessions in the Caribbean, it would clearly be an invaluable asset for any adventurer in pursue of the treasure galleons. Inconspicuously bound with no indication of the contents, this volume contained instructions vital to pilots sailing to the Americas but which the Spanish had a vested interest in not publicizing to other European powers; in fact, such manuscripts were considered objects of major importance, invaluable assets for any adventurer in pursue of the treasure galleons, and thus worthy of the outmost secretive … [Click Below for Full Description]

8vo. (18), 52, (12), 86, (2), 89-162, (6), 78 pp., 1 bl. f., (12), 273, (1), 67, (3), 5-45, (17), 20 (instead of 24) pp. (wants two final leaves of text, including an engraving on p. 23, as well as final errata leaf, all supplied in facsimile). With engr. frontispiece (Witch of Endor) and engr. six-piece title page. Contemp. calf (wanting rear cover). Second edition. - Joseph Glanvill's famous book on witchcraft, which first appeared posthumously in 1681. The editor is presumed to have been Henry More, who certainly contributed to the volume. This second edition is the first to include topical material on witchcraft in Sweden, supplied by Anthony Horneck (from a Dutch pamphlet of 1670). The book affirms the existence of witches with malign supernatural powers of magic, and attacks skepticism concerning their abilities. Glanvill likens these skeptics to the Sadducees, members of a Jewish sect from around the time of Jesus who were said to have denied the immortality of the soul. The book is also noted for the account of the "Drummer of Tedworth", an early poltergeist story. "Saducismus Triumphatus" strongly influenced Cotton Mather in his "Discourse on Witchcraft" (1689) and the notorious witch trials held in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692/93. Mather's "Wonders of the Invisible World" (1693) is largely modeled after this book and its reports, particularly the material relating to the Mora witch trial of 1669. - Some browning as usual. 1681. 8vo. (10), 56, (4), 370, (28) pp. Near contemporary vellum with giltstamped spine label. All edges sprinkled in red. First edition. The editor, Joseph Labrosse, "was born in Toulouse in 1636 and entered a Carmelite order, taking the name of Fr. Angelus of St Joseph. In 1662 he went to Rome and studied Arabic for two years before travelling to Isfahan to study Persian. While in Iran, he used medicine as a means of propagating Christianity and in the process read many Arabic and Persian books on medicine and 'visited the houses of the learned people of Isfahan and paid hundreds of visits to the shops of the druggists, the pharmacists, and the chemists.' After returning to France in 1678 he published his 'Pharmacopoea persica', which consisted of a Latin translation of a Persian book on compound remedies written in the previous century by Muzaffar ibn Muhammad al-Husayni (d. 1556), with additional comments by Labrosse" (in: I. Loudon [ed.], Western Medicine [1997], p. 52f.). [Bible Collection].
1681. Significant collection of 333 bibles, expositions, scriptural lessons, biblical school primers, and other extremely rare products of missionary presses. Many items unrecorded in Darlow & Moule, and several important 19th century works unrecorded in the OCLC database of worldwide libraries. The collection's main strengths lie in 19th and early 20th century publications produced for/in Africa and India (some 89 Indian and 58 African works) as well as hundreds of 20th century works in almost 80 further languages, ranging from Rarotongan to Miskito. Generally in original or period bindings and often with ownership markings of missionary societies, the collection paints a fascinating picture of missionary efforts of the 19th and 20th centuries. Highlights include an extremely rare edition of the New Testament printed in Tranquebar, South India in the Tamil language in 1758 by a Danish missionary, Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg (this very copy fetching nearly $4000 at Sotheby's in 2000) and a wonderful colour-illustrated edition of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress translated into the Niger-Congo (Dualla) language in 1885. - More than simply offshoots of the colonial enterprise, missionary movements set up their own presses in colonies such as Cameroon and Calcutta and began printing titles such as the present ones, usually in runs of 1000 or less. These publications often represent the first appearance of native languages in print form, shaping future efforts at graphic and textual representation of mainly spoken languages. Contemp. calf with gilt spine. First German edition of Dapper's description of the Middle East, including Mesopotamia or Algizira, Assyria, and Anatolia; the second part is entirely devoted to Arabia. Dapper's work is of special importance for its original and new information on Islam, Arab science, astronomy, philosophy, and historiography, as well as for its illustrations. "Dr. Olfert Dapper (1636-1689), physician, geographical and historical scholar, was the author of a series of works dealing with Africa, America and Asia. BLASIUS, G.
Amstelodami, sumptibus viduae Joannis à Someren, Henrici & viduae Theodori Boom, 1681. 4to (257 x 205mm). pp. (6), 494, (2), with allegorical engraved frontispiece and 65 fine engraved plates. Contemporary half vellum, gilt decorated spine with red and green gilt lettered label (hinges of frontcover worn, but firm). First edition. Gerard Blaes or Blasius (Amsterdam 1627-1682) was a Dutch physician and anatomist and in 1659 he was appointed at the Athenaeum Illustre and in the following year he became the first Amsterdam professor in medicine. '"The fist comprehensive manual of comparative anatomy based on the original and literary researches of a working anatomist"'(Cole, p. 151). The work is largely a compendium of previous writers on the subject, but does include Blaes's own investigations. Blaes was the first to link the production of the voice in birds with the lower larynx, and he anticipated Cowper in finding Cowper's glands, which he illustrated in his plate of the genitalia and os penis of the rat. The eighty-five pages devoted to the anatomy of the dog was the first comprehensive and original treatise on a vertebrate since Ruini's monograph on the horse" (Norman 241). The attractive frontispiece is by Jan Luyken. A copy with fine impressions of the plates.//Nissen ZBI, 381.

CHILD, Sir Josiah.
London J.R. for the East-India Company and 1689 1681 - First editions. 2 volumes in 1, small 4to., [2], 43, [3]; 14pp., lacks final blank, last two leaves re-margined without loss, shaved close at head affecting some numbering, scattered foxing towards end, modern panelled calf antique, red morocco lettering piece. Sir Josiah Child, a rich and successful merchant, had demonstrated his understanding of economic issues by writing a tract entitled Brief observations concerning trade, and interest of money (1668). He became a Director of the East India Company in 1674, and its governor in 1681, playing an active role in advancing and defending both its trading and its political interests until his death in 1699. The present influential work championed the Company's activities and emphasised the benefits of the East India trade to the nation as a whole, but was severely criticised by some Directors, such as Thomas Papillon, the Deputy Governor, who were in favour of a more open trade. Child's views prevailed for the time being, but his opponents continued to question the royal prerogative and the Company's monopoly. Goldsmiths' 2414 & 2730; Kress 1530; Pickett 175 & 223; Wing C-3866a & C-3865.

(JEWS, HISTORY OF). HICKES, GEORGE
London: Walter Kittilby, 1681. FIRST EDITION n. This sermon delivered by Hickes, an early scholar of Anglo-Saxon languages as well as a contributor to Anglican theology, is less an indictment of Judaism than a condemnation of the misappropriation of Jewish practice and Jewish biblical importance in certain Christian faiths. Hickes describes the ancient Israelites as the "chosen people" of God who were given special "ceremonial and judicial statutes" that applied only to them, including dietary restrictions and circumcision of male infants. Hickes strongly disapproves of certain Christian sects--notably the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches--continuing to follow this "Mosaic Code," which was negated by the coming of Christ. Hickes presents himself as an authority on Judaism because of the study of Hebrew he undertook in order to discuss rabbinical learning with his patron, the Duke of Lauderdale. This sermon was well praised by his fellow theologians and nonjurors Dr. Allestree and John Kettlewell.. 203 x 159 mm. (8 x 6 1/4"). 4 p.l., 32 pp. FIRST EDITION. Modern burgundy quarter sheep over marbled boards. Front pastedown with bookplate of Alfred Rubens. Wing H-1858. A little rubbing to extremities, first and last page a bit soiled, A1 with one-inch closed fore-edge tear and tiny hole at gutter, title slightly soiled, otherwise a very pleasing copy with only trivial condition problems, the text almost entirely clean and fresh, and the binding with little wear. FABRO ANTONIO
PETRI BORDE JOANNIS & PETRI ARNAUD, 1681. In - 4 35 x 25, pp. I - 16 - 1124 - 76, legatura piena pergamena con titolo manoscritto in bella grafia al dorso. Frontespizio in due colori con bella incisione. Capilettera e finalini incisi. Latino
