- In leuchtenden Farben kolorierter Kupferstich. MAASKAMP, Evert.
Colas 1681; Landwehr, Coloured plates 362; Vinet 2216 (2nd of 3 eds. listed). Second edition in the original Dutch and French, printed from the plates of the first edition, of the famous first Dutch costume book to cover the different costumes of the various provinces, edited by the well-known publisher Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834) in Amsterdam. The illustrations are much more than just costume plates, for they show people (mostly peasants, but also city dwellers, clergymen, soldiers and others) engaged in a wide variety of activities (selling goods, going to church, courting, etc.), though always in their best clothes. The costumes include those of the Moravian brethren. Each plate has an engraved caption in French and Dutch with a detailed explanation on separate letterpress leaves in Dutch and French. The extensive texts accompanying the plates describe the costumes and people in their cultural, historical, moral and social context. The introduction notes that the costume plates were drawn from life under the direction of Jacques Kuyper (1761-1808), engraved by Lodewijk Gottlieb Portman (1772-post 1828) and coloured by the now famous Dutch painter Jan Willem Pieneman (1779-1853).With an 1816 Dutch inscription and two bookplates, manuscript titles and captions in English. In very good condition, with only an occasional minor spot or smudge and with a small corner of 1 leaf cut off, not approaching the text, and nearly untrimmed. The binding is rubbed and the board edges tattered. A beautiful, important and culturally illuminating costume book from the Napoleanic Netherlands … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEE, NATHANIEL
London: Printed for Richard Tonson, and Jacob Tonson, 1681, 1681. First edition. Wing L-852; Pforzheimer 590; NCBEL II, 746. Lightly foxed; corner torn from one leaf, with loss of a catchword; very good copy, with decent margins.. 4to, disbound, [74] pages. Lee's drama about the Roman senator Brutus, which includes a few lines on what Pforzheimer calls "the immoral effeminacy of Tarquin." These were interpreted as an untoward reflection on Charles II. As a consequence, Lord Chamberlain shut down the play during its third performance. The dedication includes a reference to Shakespeare and Ben Jonson: "There are some Subjects that require but half the strength of a great Poet, but when Greece or old Rome come in play, the Nature Wit and Vigor of foremost Shakespeare, the Judgment and Force of Jonson . . . will scarce suffice for so terrible a grapple.".

Contemporary vellum, initials and date stamped in gilt on front board, manuscript title at head of spine. Light scattered foxing and tanning. Very good. The first German edition of Dapper's important compilations of travels in Asia and Persia, following the first Amsterdam edition of 1672. Olfert Dapper (1639-89) was a Dutch physician and indefatigable scholar and compiler of travel accounts. Though he apparently never left Amsterdam, Dapper produced several finely illustrated volumes describing travels in Asia, Asia Minor, the Middle East, and Africa. Culled from a variety of accounts, his works were very popular, and are especially noteworthy for their excellent illustrations and maps. The first title in the present volume describes travels in Asia and contains several detailed illustrations of Hindu and Buddhist myths, as well as Indian natives and port scenes. There is also a double- page map of "Indostan," showing the Indian subcontinent. Much of the text relates travels in India, though there are also sections on Kabul and Kandahar. The second title relates travels in Persia and includes a double- page map showing the area encompassing present … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARIOTTE, Edmé
Michallet. (8,5 x 15) PRIMA EDIZIONE. Piena pelle coeva con fregi in oro al dorso. (4) ff, 757 pp.(ma 760) per due errori di numerazione, (1) p. + 17 tavv. f.t. (11 rip.). Rarissimo.
