Buchillustr. 1714; Garrison/Morton 297. - "Grew, who was secretary of the Royal Society, compiled this catalogue of its museum. He was one of the early anatomists to use the microscope and he introduced the term 'comparative anatomy'. His treatise on the comparative anatomy of stomachs and guts is an early classic in the field, and the thirty-one plates are particularly fine" (Heirs of Hippocrates 640). - Die Tafeln zeigen in sorgfältiger Darstellung zahlreiche Tiere (Vierfüßer, Vögel, Fische, Muscheln, Seesterne, Insekten), Skelette und Skelettteile, Früchte und Pflanzenteile, Versteinerungen sowie im 2. Large Collection of Missionary Publications in ca. 100 Languages.

West Africa, India, etc., 1681-1991.. . Significant collection of 333 bibles, expositions, scriptural lessons, biblical school primers, and other extremely rare products of missionary presses. Many items unrecorded in Darlow & Moule, and several important 19th century works unrecorded in the OCLC database of worldwide libraries. The collection's main strengths lie in 19th and early 20th century publications produced for/in Africa and India (some 89 Indian and 58 African works) as well as hundreds of 20th century works in almost 80 further languages, ranging from Rarotongan to Miskito. Generally in original or period bindings and often with ownership markings of missionary societies, the collection paints a fascinating picture of missionary efforts of the 19th and 20th centuries. Highlights Include an extremely rare edition of the New Testament printed in Tranquebar, South India in the Tamil language in 1758 by a Danish missionary, Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg (this very copy fetching nearly $4000 at Sotheby's in 2000) and a wonderful color-illustrated edition of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress translated into the Niger-Congo (Dualla) language in 1885. - More than simply offshoots of the colonial enterprise, missionary movements set up their own presses in colonies such as Cameroon and Calcutta and began printing titles such as the present ones, usually in runs of 1000 or less. These publications often represent the first appearance of native languages in print form, shaping future efforts at graphic and textual representation of mainly spoken languages. Interestingly, many of the present volumes also represent the first language guides to several African and Indian languages, prepared by missionary presses to facilitate the conversion of natives. "Much of this activity stemmed from the importance placed by Protestants on a literate population which could read and study Scripture for themselves" (Weber, p. 2). The present collection clearly demonstrates how missionary directives, while often fueled by primarily by a desire to 'save souls' and 'convert heathens', also concerned themselves with children's education (N144), health (N271), the management of schools (N261), agriculture (N65), mothercraft (N278), and language learning (e.g. N91, N161, N256).- The importance of the printing press and its products to the missionary efforts of the 19th and 20th century has rarely been directly addressed in the secondary literature. Robert E. Frykenberg's "Christianity in India: from beginnings to the present", for example, hardly touches on missionary presses at all, perhaps due to the copious and diffuse nature their printings. Yet the importance attached by contemporaries to the power of the press should not be underestimated. Writing in the The Baptist Missionary Magazine of 1840, a Mr Crocker expressed the heartfelt need for printing press in the West African colonies: "That God designs to employ the press as an important instrument in diffusing the light of truth, we have abundant evidence [...] It is true, in this country the people cannot read. But the press is required to furnish them books that they may learn to read [...] It seems desirable that boys of great promise should have the stores of English literature open to them." His petition was duly granted several years later, when the first mission press was established on the Cameroonian mainland in 1844 (cf. early examples from the "Mission Press, Western Africa" in numbers N149, N150, N130, etc). - Many of the present works were acquired from what must have been the greatest such institutional collection of its time, the library of the Baptist Mission House in London. - Of the utmost rarity are not only the early imprints of African missionary presses, but also the briefer, soft-bound pamphlets issued by these presses whose survival rate must be minimal. We find numerous examples in this collection of such pamphlets which are either unrecorded (eg N 93, N275) or recorded only in the Darlow and Moule collection at Cambridge University Library. - Detailed catalogue available upon request. - Weber, Charles, International influences and Baptist mission in West Cameroon (1993); "Importance of the press to the mission", The Baptist Missionary Magazine, Vol 20, pp. 192-4 (August, 1840); cf. also e.g. Stephen Neill, A History of Christian Missions (1991).

Saducismus Triumphatus: or, Full and Plain Evidence Concerning Witches and Apparitions. In two parts. The first treating of their possibility. The second of their real existence. The second edition.

London, Thomas Newcomb, (1681-)1682.. 8vo. (18), 52, (12), 86, (2), 89-162, (6), 78 pp., 1 bl. f., (12), 273, (1), 67, (3), 5-45, (17), 20 (instead of 24) pp. (wants two final leaves of text, including an engraving on p. 23, as well as final errata leaf, all supplied in facsimile). With engr. frontispiece (Witch of Endor) and engr. six-piece title page. Contemp. calf (wanting rear cover).. Second edition. - Joseph Glanvill's famous book on witchcraft, which first appeared posthumously in 1681. The editor is presumed to have been Henry More, who certainly contributed to the volume. This second edition is the first to include topical material on witchcraft in Sweden, supplied by Anthony Horneck (from a Dutch pamphlet of 1670). The book affirms the existence of witches with malign supernatural powers of magic, and attacks skepticism concerning their abilities. Glanvill likens these skeptics to the Sadducees, members of a Jewish sect from around the time of Jesus who were said to have denied the immortality of the soul. The book is also noted for the account of the "Drummer of Tedworth", an early poltergeist story. "Saducismus Triumphatus" strongly influenced Cotton Mather in his "Discourse on Witchcraft" (1689) and the notorious witch trials held in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692/93. Mather's "Wonders of the Invisible World" (1693) is largely modeled after this book and its reports, particularly the material relating to the Mora witch trial of 1669. - Some browning as usual. Spine severely damaged; wants back cover and final 3 ff. - Wing (2nd ed.) G823. Cf. Yale, Alchemy II, 501, no. 141.

Pascaarte vande Noorder Zee custen van America Vande West-hoeck van Ysland doorde Straet Davis en Hudson, tot aen Terra Neuf

Amsterdam: , 1681. Amsterdam, 1681. unbound. Sea chart. Copper plate engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 19.5 x 23.25". Sheet measures 23 x 27". This wonderful sea chart speaks to 17th-century European interest in the uppermost parts of North America, and particularly Arctic Canada. The map shows the area around the entrance to Hudson Bay and the area of the supposed Northwest Passage. While the interior of most of the land depicted is little explored, the map offers substantial detail on the coasts, with many coastal towns and sea ports labeled. The title cartouche in the upper right corner evidences contemporary European opinions of both Native Americans and wildlife in the region by showing a native and a group of polar bears engaged in a stand-off. The scale in the lower left includes Dutch, Spanish, and English miles and shows a more pleasant image of European and Native American cooperation. The map was published in van Keulen's "Zee-Fakkel." It has ample margins and no chips or tears, although there is considerable mat burn and some color bleed. Fortunately, the deluxe original hand-coloring and sharp engraving gives the map a fine antique look that offsets this discoloration. This is the second state of the map with Newfoundland being mislabeled as Teppa Nova. Johannes van Keulen (1654-1715) was a Dutch cartographer known for his influential nautical and maritime atlases. Based in Amsterdam, he produced books and maps that described travel itineraries and aided in sea navigation.

TEXT FROM THE LIFE OF SAINT CYPRIAN THE MARTYR

Italy [perhaps Lombardy], ca, 1075. Italy [perhaps Lombardy], ca, 1075. Hardcover. 432 x 305 mm (17 x 12"). Double column, 42 lines in a pleasing romanesque book hand. Rubric in red majuscules and WITH AN IMPOSING 16-LINE INITIAL "P" FEATURING GRACEFULLY CURLING FOLIATE INFILL as well as a four-line terminating descender, the whole IN RED PENWORK AND GREEN WASH. With the inscription of "D. Thomasio da Belmont" (perhaps Belmont-sur-Lausanne) and the date 1681 in one margin; a couple of other marginal annotations. Formerly a structural element in a binding and consequently defective, with a cut-out piece costing 12 complete lines at the bottom of one column and most of the same lines in the other, upper corner slightly crumpled and a bit darkened, small piece missing from one margin (no loss), other minor defects, but still a desirable specimen because of the striking initial and because of the unusually clean condition for a recovered leaf. From a very stately volume on the lives of the saints, begins an account of the life of Saint Cyprian (d. 258), a bishop of Carthage martyred under the persecutions of the Roman emperor Valerian. A beloved prelate, he encouraged his flock to persevere in their faith, setting an example with the courage he demonstrated in facing his own death by beheading. Lives of the saints, or "Vitae," were often read as part of the liturgical celebration of a saint's feast day. Bertholdus of Micy, the ninth century author of the "Life of Saint Maximinus," observed that "what has been said and done by the saints ought not be concealed in silence. God's love provided their deeds to serve as a norm of living for the men of their own times as well as of those years which have since passed; they are now to be imitated piously by those who are faithful to Christ."

Panel binding scuffed and darkened. Hinges cracked. Front free end paper has bottom third missing. Owner's signature. Tear in bottom corner b3. Small tears, stains and holes. Extended title reads: "Together with A Particular Account Of Many Gross Corruptions and Impostures in the Church of Rome, Highly dishonourable and injurious to Christian Religion, To which is prefixt A Large Preface to the Romanists". Owner's signature of Lucy Fortescue Lyttleton, daughter of Hugh Fortescue, and spouse of George, first Baron Lyttelton. Lucy died in 1747, aged 29. There is a portrait of her by John M. Williams. Henry Foulis became a sub-rector of Lincoln College in 1667. He was warmly attached to the church of England, and attacked with equal venom by the Presbyterians and papists. His death in 1669 was 'occasioned by a generous and good-natured intemperance'. This volume was his second book. The delay in publication after his death was caused by a 'knavish bookseller'. Notes for other works were burnt by Foulis on his deathbed. Anthony a Wood was an intimate friend, responsible for the quotes above, and also made a catalogue of Foulis's library. Three of the known copies (British Library, Bibliothèque Nationale, Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève) contain additional leaves; these may have been added either for the May 16, 1681 performance at the Opéra or for the revivals on May 6, 1682 or September 11, 1705. Silin: Benserade p. 394. Pitou p. 326. & & Le Triomphe de l'amour, an opera-ballet in a prologue and five acts, was first performed on January 21st 1681 in Saint-Germain. It is "a ballet in twenty entrees with music by Jean-Baptiste Lully, a libretto by Philippe Quinault, and choreography by Isaac de Benserade... Louis XIV commissioned the work to please the dauphine, who was fond of music and dancing... It aroused such enthusiasm that the lords and ladies of the Court joined in with the professional artistes for its gala premiere featuring magnificent costumes and dazzling jewels... It has been remarked that Le Triomphe de l'Amour is best viewed as an opera because its libretto has a certain unity and its production depends in such large measure upon its music as well as upon the dance... [It] is a seminal opera-ballet, and not an expanded divertissement." Schwartz & Schlundt: French Court Dance and Dance Music, pp. 325-326. & & The work is particularly noteworthy as it is believed to be the first stage work to include female dancers: "Even though professional female dancers had been used, albeit rarely, in court entertainments, the performance of Le triomphe de l'amour in 1681 marked their first appearance on the stage of the Opera (female roles there had previously been assigned to professinal male dancers)." James R. Anthony in TNG Vol. 11 p. 319.& & "The presence of ladies of noble and royal blood on the stage opened the way for women to dance regularly with the company. Le Journal de l'Opéra notes on 10 May 1681: "For the first time, introduction of danseuses into the ballets of the Opéra." Pitou p. 325

        Monasticon Anglicanum

Londini (London): Aliciae Warren, 1681. 80 large pristine plates. Text in Latin. Note: that vol. 1 is a second edition (1682), and vol. 2 is a first edition (1661). A third volume was published in 1673, more than a decade after the second volumes, but a fire at the publisher's office destroyed many of those copies, and it is common to find only volumes one and two paired together, as they stand alone on their own without the third volume. Overall in VERY GOOD condition. Photos available upon request.. Quarter Calf Leather. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Hardcover.
