Parts 4 and 5 of the present Nuremberg edition contain as a supplement the first German edition of Spon's and Wheeler's archaeological description of their journey to the Levant. "Dr. Olfert Dapper (1636-1689), physician, geographical and historical scholar, was the author of a series of works dealing with Africa, America and Asia.         Miscellaneous Poems

1681. MARVELL, Andrew.Miscellaneous Poems.London: Printed for Robert Boulter, 1681.First and only collected edition of Marvell?'s poetry to be published in his own century, containing the first printing of many poems, including ?"To His Coy Mistress,?" with scarce engraved frontispiece portrait, a handsome wide-margined copy in contemporary boards."The finest flower of secular and serious metaphysical poetry… Marvell united in himself, with an independent moderation of his own, a fresh muscular, agile, and subtle metaphysical wit and the rationality, clarity, economy, and structural sense of a genuine classic, the cultured, negligent grace of a cavalier and something of the religious and ethical seriousness of a Puritan Platonist. To this rare combination of gifts were added, moreover, a feeling for nature at once particular and general, earthly and unearthly, and an individual sensitivity and suppleness of rhythm…. It is [Marvell's] blending of the metaphysical and the classical which makes 'To His Coy Mistress' stand out as it does even in such an age of love poetry" (Bush, English Literature in the Early 18th Century, 158-63). Very few of Marvell's poems, and none of his important metaphysical poems, were published in his lifetime. Evidence exists that the woman who called herself "Mary Marvell," and who had this collection published "according to the exact Copies of my late dear Husband, under his own Hand-Writing, being found since his Death among his other Papers," may only have been Marvell's housekeeper, claiming to be his widow in order to inherit a small sum.Pforzheimer 671. Wither to Prior 536. Wing M872. Hayward 126.Interior generally fresh with engraved frontispiece portrait trimmed and mounted, occasional expert archival marginal repair, minor edge-wear to boards. An extremely good copy of this preeminent literary work.

Some proposals for the imployment of the poor, and for the prevention of idleness and the consequence thereof, begging. A practice so dishonourable to the nation, and to the Christian religion. In a letter to a friend by T.F

London, printed by J. Grover, and are to be sold by Francis Smith, at the Elephant and Castle, and Brab. Aylmer, at the Three Pigeons in Cornhill. 1681. 4to., engraved frontispiece, (2) + 46pp., a fine, crisp, copy with good margins, in old (18th century?) marbled wrappers. Second, much expanded edition: scarce. Wing F.972. Goldsmiths 2435. Kress 1534. Massie 1049. Thomas Firmin (1632-1697) had learned to distrust mere almsgiving and made it his business to enquire into the condition of the poor by personal investigation and to reduce the causes of social distress by economic effort. His first philanthropic experiment was occasioned by the trade disorganisation of the plague year (1665). He provided employment at making up clothing for hands thrown out of work. Other schemes involved the building of storage space by the river for corn and coals to be retailed to the poor in hard times at cost price. Early in 1676 he had started a workhouse in Little Britain, for the employment of the poor in the linen manufacture. Firmin employed as many as 1700 spinners, besides flax dressers and weavers. His arrangements for the comfort and cleanliness of his hands and for the industrial training of children rescued from the streets was admirable. But the scheme never paid. Firmin sold his linens at cost price and the annual loss on the venture was £200. In addition to his philanthropic efforts on behalf of the poor, Firmin was a prison philanthropist and worked hard to alleviate the condition of prisoners, particularly those imprisoned for debt. The present work is his most important and best known publication. It contains, amongst other things, an account of his own Work-House.

Pharmacopoea persica ex idiomate persico in latinum conversa. Tafsir-i murakkabat-i qarabadin-i parsi [-i Muzaffar b. Muhammad as-Sifa'i] ba-dast-i Angelus Karmelit.

Paris, Etienne Michallet, 1681.. 8vo. (10), 56, (4), 370, (28) pp. Near contemporary vellum with giltstamped spine label. All edges sprinkled in red.. First edition. The editor, Joseph Labrosse, "was born in Toulouse in 1636 and entered a Carmelite order, taking the name of Fr. Angelus of St Joseph. In 1662 he went to Rome and studied Arabic for two years before travelling to Isfahan to study Persian. While in Iran, he used medicine as a means of propagating Christianity and in the process read many Arabic and Persian books on medicine and 'visited the houses of the learned people of Isfahan and paid hundreds of visits to the shops of the druggists, the pharmacists, and the chemists.' After returning to France in 1678 he published his 'Pharmacopoea persica', which consisted of a Latin translation of a Persian book on compound remedies written in the previous century by Muzaffar ibn Muhammad al-Husayni (d. 1556), with additional comments by Labrosse" (in: I. Loudon [ed.], Western Medicine [1997], p. 52f.). Hyde (Biographia Britannica, cited by Langles, Biographie universelle) asserts that the credit for this work really belongs to Pere Matthieu. - Insignificant chipping to spine label. Some minor browning and brownstaining. 18th century annotations on first endpaper and engraved bookplate to pastedown. From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013). - Wilson 7. OCLC 13058281.

DU 17 AOUST 1671

Paris: Par Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1681.. 4pp. Quarto, on a folded folio sheet. Very minor soiling. Contemporary inscription. Fine. An early French decree relating to America, of particular importance for the French West Indies. An ongoing problem of the sugar colonies in the West Indies was feeding the slave work force. Throughout the era of slavery, food was imported from Europe and North America, as it was cheaper and easier than using labor on the spot to raise it. This act exempts from warehousing charges Irish and other beef and all items required for sugar refinery destined for exportation to America. A variant of Wroth 125, which was printed thirty years later. OCLC locates only one copy, at NYPL. From the library of Cardinal Étienne Charles de Loménie de Brienne (1727-94), Minister of Louis XVI, Archbishop of Toulouse and of Sens. A friend of Voltaire and a member of the Académie Française, Brienne wielded significant power as head of the Finance Ministry, which earned him many enemies. He died in prison during the French Revolution, despite having renounced Catholicism in 1793 (presumably as an attempt to save his life). WROTH, ACTS OF FRENCH ROYAL ADMINISTRATION 125 (ref). The lower part of the back is professionally restored (from the last raised band untill the bottom, about 7 cm). The prints in the book are of extinguished quality, which exceed the quality of normal book-illustrations. The book contains of the following 8 sections: [1] L'Arte di restituire ˆ Roma la tralasciata navigatione del suo Teuere. Rome, Lazzari Varese, 1685. About Cornelis Meijer (Amsterdam 1629 - Rome 1701): Cornelis Meijer was a Dutch engineer, born in Amsterdam in 1629. He was the son of a simple Amsterdam carriage wheel maker. The papal chamber asked hi mto come to Italy to purify the Tiber and to make it navigable. Het went to Rome via Venice in 1674/1675. He became a member of the most important scientific association, the "Accademia Fisicomatematica" which became known among art historians by its connections with the famous artist Casper van Wittel ("Gaspare Vanvitelli").       Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn, 1681.4to. Contemporary mottled calf, spine richly gilt, with red morocco title label to spine (extremities of spine sl. damaged; sl. rubbed). With engraved allegorical title-page and 17(of 18) engraved plates (several folding) by Jan Luyken and J. Harrewyn. (8),495,(7) pp.First edition. - This book is claimed to be translated from the papers of an English nobleman but according to Tiele it was composed by G. Broekhuizen. 'G. van Broekhuizen, a seventeenth-century translator and publisher from Amsterdam, had read enough travel accounts to be able to compose one himself. Edward Melton's voyage to Egypt, the West Indies, Persia, Turkey, The East Indies and neighbouring regions is pure fiction, but van Broekhuizen inserted enough curiosities to make his book interesting' (Koster, To Hellen's noble land, 32). Muller, at the other hand states ' this description is rendered still more important by the circumstance, that Melton was at New-York in 1668, in the height of the quarrel between England and Holland on the possession of the country, so that he uses the names New York and New-Amsterdam indiscriminately'. 'Exactly who he was, wether he really existed, or if Melton was his real name remains an unsettled problem' (Howgego p.701). The first part is dealing with Egypt. A very detailed description is given in the second part of New Netherland, based on Adriaen van der Donck and Arnoldus Montanus, Virginia, Florida, Cuba, Haiti, Panama and Jamaica; also relating to the buccaneers in the West Indies. The third part is dealing with Persia and Turkey, the fourth with Asia and South Africa. Van Broekhuizen showed a morbid interest in oriental tortures, which he described in detail and of which Jan Luyken presented some vivid illustrations. 'Several of the plates are by the celebrated Jan Luiken and are among his best productions' (Asher 16). Tiele 738; Cat. NHSM I, p.118; Sabin 47472; European Americana IV p.82; Muller, America, 960; Weber 324; Not in the Blackmer or Atabey Collection; Van Eeghen-Van der Kellen 42.

Hygini Aug. Liberti nomen praefert

Amsterdam (Amstelodami), Ex Officina viduae Joannis à Someren, 1681. 8vo. 2 parts in 1: (56),488,(68 index);330,(26 index) p., frontispiece, engraved portrait; 43 fine text engravings. Vellum. 20 cm (Ref: Schweiger 2,464 & 1309: 'neue Recension bes. des Hygin. nach (5) Handschriften und älteren Ausgaben. Die Anmerkungen verbessern und erläutern den Text. Die Kupfer sind aus den Arateis des Grotius genommen; Brunet 3,1982; Ebert 14621; Spoelder p. 688, Utrecht 8) (Details: Prize copy, including the printed prize for Albertus Coenen, dated april 1823, and signed by the Rector S. Nijhoff and the school officials of Utrecht. Thongs laced through at head and tail of the spine; Backstrip panelled in gilt with repeated floral motives; gilt borders and armorial cornerpieces; gilt coat of arms of Utrecht in centre of covers; Frontispiece showing mythological scenes, from Zeus to Charon. Small woodcut on the title. A portrait of Thomas Munckerus engraved by H. Caussé. In the 'Poeticon Astronomicon' of Hyginus we find 43 fine text engraving of constellations and signs of the zodiac, which are engraved after the engravings by Jacob de Gheyn, and which were originally published in Hugo Grotii 'Syntagma Arateorum', Leiden 1600) (Condition: Vellum slightly soiled; small stain on right upper corner of the frontcover, large light stain on backcover; the ties are lacking) (Note: The first part of this collection begins with the 'Fabulae', a handbook of mythology compiled from Greek sources, and the 'Poeticon Astronomicum', a manual of astronomy, also from Greek sources, both works attributed to a Hyginus. The second part contains mythological works of the 'mythographus' Fabius Planciades Fulgentius, ca. 500, Lactantius Placidus, 6th century, and ends with 'De Deorum imaginibus libellus' of Albricus Philosophus, an influential mythographer, who according to Worldcat lived in the 13th century. The Dutch schoolmaster Thomas Muncker, or Munckerus, who was Rector of the Schola Latina of Delft from 1667 till 1680, is best known for his edition of the 'Mythographi Latini'. He produced also an edition of Antoninus Liberalis in 1676. Saxe called him 'cathedra Academica dignissimus' (Van der Aa, 12/2, 1148). On the portrait is depicted a young and vigorous man with a big wig and a dressing gown. Nevertheless, he died before the book was published) (Provenance; The prize is for one Albertus Coenen, who must have been ca. 14 years old. He received the prize on the occasion of his promotion as the first of his class from the 5th to the 4th grade. We found a dissertation (University Utrecht, 9 Juni 1836, cum laude) of one Albertus Coenen van 's Gravesloot: 'Dissertatio De querela falsi' Utrecht, Altheer, 1836. Van der Aa learns us that Jonkheer Mr. Albert Coenen van 's Gravesloot owned in 1843 the Seigníory 's Gravesloot in the province of Utrecht. The village housed 20 families and was 3,5 hour walk from city of Utrecht, where the Jonkheer actually lived. Genealogieonline.nl tells us that he was born 27 July 1809 in Utrecht. He died 24 December 1859 in Utrecht, where he was councilor of the provincial court of Utrecht) (Collation: * - 3*-8, 4*-4; A - 2K-8 (min 2K8),2L-8, 2M-2; A - Y-8, Z-2) (Photographs on request)

Vgl. Slg. Bernus 158 (Ausg. Hbg. Härtel 1681); Caillet 3982 (Ausg. 1669); Ferchl 157; Rosenthal 186 (Ausg. 1669); Ackermann V/1346 (Ausg. 1673): "Sehr selten! I. Das Buch der Hieroglyphischen Figuren [...] Portr. d. Verf.) als Beigabe ein alter Stich von Flamel (Plattenformat: 145x112mm).
