The tryal of William Viscount Stafford for high treason, In Conspiring the Death of the King, The Extirpation of the Protestant Religion, The Subversion of the Government, And Introduction of Popery into this Realm, Upon an impeachment by the Knights, Citizens, and Burgesses in Parliament Assembled, In the Name of Themselves and of All the Commons of England: Begun in Westminster-Hall the 30th day of November 1680, and continued until the 7th of December following, on which day Judgement of High Treason was given upon him. With the Manner of his Execution on the 29th of the same Month

London: Printed by the Assigns of John Bill, Thomas Newcomb, and Henry Hills, Printers to the Kings most Excellent Majesty, 1681. [4], 218pp, [2]. With initial and terminal blank. A large copy, with leaves measuring 350mm. Finely bound in contemporary red crushed morocco, panelled in gilt. Marbled endpapers, A.E.G. Rubbed, with slight loss to head and foot of spine, some scuffing to surfaces and cracking to joints. Later ink inscription 'Sir W.W.W. Bart. brought from Llanforda by Fr Chambre in March 1779" to blank-fly, with associated pencilled initials of C.W.W.W. (most likely Charles Watkins Williams Wynne) to verso of FFEP. Very occasional manuscript corrections/deletions. Llanforda was the country home of Sir William Williams (1633/4-1700), lawyer and MP who was elected speaker of the House of Commons at the third and fourth Parliaments of King Charles II. The third parliament is better known as the Exclusion Bill parliament, at which attempts were made to alter the line of monarchical succession to exclude the the King's Catholic brother, James Duke of York, in light of the Popish plot and amidst reports of a Catholic uprising in Ireland. Although the Exclusion Bill passed the House of Commons, it failed to secure majority support in the Lords. Given the luxuriousness of this binding and the indications of later provenance, this was almost certainly presented to Williams, as speaker - perhaps to reiterate the significance of this official account of the most high profile of the Popish Plot trials. Wing T2238.. Folio.

RECUEIL DE VOYAGES DE MR. THEVENOT

Paris, 1681. Contemporary calf, spine gilt, raised bands. Chipped at spine ends, a bit of wear along upper and lower portions of front hinge, bottom edge of rear board slightly worn. A few neat corrections in a contemporary hand. Tasman map and the two folding plates with closed tears along the bound-in edge, but with no loss. Small closed tear along one fold of the Mississippi map, but with no loss. Overall, a very good copy, lacking only the equipolar projection map. In a half morocco and cloth box. The very rare first edition of Thevenot's collection of travels, and an essential document in the exploration of the interior of North America. This is a very complex book bibliographically, and there are many variant issues, especially in the part of the work devoted to natural history discoveries of Swammerdam and others. Many copies lack some of the natural history components. Its importance and value, however, derive from the section and accompanying map devoted to the travels of Marquette and Joliet and the map showing the discoveries of Abel Tasman, and these are identical in both editions. The most notable aspect of Thevenot is that it contains the first publication of Father Marquette's relation of his discovery, with Joliet, of the upper Mississippi River and their exploration as far as the Arkansas River in 1673. This remarkable expedition established the basic structure of the Mississippi headwaters for the first time, and opened the way for the dominance of the French in the Mississippi Valley over the next century. Their account begins on May 17, 1673, when the party set out in two canoes from Mackinac. They reached the Mississippi via Green Bay and the Fox River on June 17, floated as far south as Arkansas, and returned north by way of the Illinois and Des Plaines rivers and the later site of Chicago. The accompanying map is a major landmark of American cartography, "Carte de la decouverte faite l'an 1673, dans l'Amerique Septentrionale." The map is the first to bear the word "Michigan," and shows the lake of that name and the Mississippi River from its headwaters to the sea. A figure appears in the center of the map, identified as "Manit8," representing an Indian god. The map appears here in its third state, as usual, with the date of 1673 in the title of the map. Burden convincingly asserts that the first and second states (known in only one copy each) were almost certainly proofs. This is one of the most important American frontier exploration narratives. Howes says: "The first edition of Thevenot's RECUEIL, while less rare than Le Clerq's PREMIER ETABLISSEMENT DE LA FOI, 1691, is of equal importance...." "The first printed representation of the Mississippi based on actual observation" - Streeter. The other sections of Thevenot's work are of considerable interest as well. The Tasman map is one of the first to show parts of the Australian coastline in detail, based on his 1644 voyage. It shows part of the coast of New Guinea, Tasmania, and much of the east coast of Australia, and is a basic work of Australian cartography. It is present here in its third issue, with the Tropic of Capricorn inserted and with the rhumblines. "In any state the map is a great rarity. It is one of the earliest charts devoted entirely to Australia, and is the first French map of Australia" - Davidson. There is also an account of explorations in polar regions by the Dutch in 1680, which is usually accompanied by a third map, an equipolar projection, which is lacking from this copy. The third exploration piece is an account of a trip overland from Russia to China in 1653. Finally, there is a discourse on navigation, and the natural history sections discussing the illustration of insects. A major work of Americana, with one of the landmark accounts and maps of the discovery of the Mississippi Valley.

ASIA / ODER: AUSFUHRLICHE BESCHREIBUNG DES REICHS DES GROSSEN MOGOLS UND EINES GROSSEN THEILS VON INDIEN

Nurnberg, 1681. Extra engraved titlepage in first work. Folio. Contemporary vellum, initials and date stamped in gilt on front board, manuscript title at head of spine. Light scattered foxing and tanning. A very good copy. The first German edition of Dapper's important compilations of travels in Asia and Persia, following the first Amsterdam edition of 1672. Olfert Dapper (1639-89) was a Dutch physician and indefatigable scholar and compiler of travel accounts. Though he apparently never left Amsterdam, Dapper produced several finely illustrated volumes describing travels in Asia, Asia Minor, the Middle East, and Africa. Culled from a variety of accounts, his works were very popular, and are especially noteworthy for their excellent illustrations and maps. The first title in the present volume describes travels in Asia and contains several detailed illustrations of Hindu and Buddhist myths, as well as Indian natives and port scenes. There is also a double- page map of "Indostan," showing the Indian subcontinent. Much of the text relates travels in India, though there are also sections on Kabul and Kandahar. The second title relates travels in Persia, and includes a double- page map showing the area encompassing present-day Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. There are double-page plates showing views of the cities of "Schamachie," "Isfahan," "Kom," "Derbendt," and more. OCLC locates only nine copies of this dual issue of Dapper's works. Not in Cox. Scarce.

RECOPILACION DE LEYES DE LOS REYNOS DE LAS INDIAS

Madrid. 1681.. Three volumes, of four. [5],299;[3],298;[3],302 leaves. Lacks volume four and one preliminary leaf in first volume. Folio. Later sheepskin, leather labels. Binding rubbed at extremities. Light soiling to titlepages, titlepage of volume one backed with paper. Minor soiling to text; some heavier dampstaining to volume one. Overall, very good. First edition of the first comprehensive compilation of the laws of the Spanish Indies. Antonio Rodríguez de León Pinello compiled it by 1635, but it circulated only in manuscript until Fernando Jiménez de Paniagua brought it up to date and saw the work through the press in 1681. Prior to the publication of this massive work, it was common practice for lawyers and courts in the various legal districts of the New World (i.e., audiencias) to compile in manuscript the laws in force in order that they might be used as precedents. Upon publication of this code, the number of precedents did not decrease, instead it increased: the courts continued to accept the cases and laws in the old local manuscript compilations, as well as those on point and laws contained in the Recopilación. In sum, this is a major work for all collections of international and Hispanic specific law. SABIN 68386. PALAU 252516. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 681/135.

        Miscellaneous Poems

1681. MARVELL, Andrew.Miscellaneous Poems.London: Printed for Robert Boulter, 1681.First and only collected edition of Marvell?'s poetry to be published in his own century, containing the first printing of many poems, including ?"To His Coy Mistress,?" with scarce engraved frontispiece portrait, a handsome wide-margined copy in contemporary boards."The finest flower of secular and serious metaphysical poetry… Marvell united in himself, with an independent moderation of his own, a fresh muscular, agile, and subtle metaphysical wit and the rationality, clarity, economy, and structural sense of a genuine classic, the cultured, negligent grace of a cavalier and something of the religious and ethical seriousness of a Puritan Platonist. To this rare combination of gifts were added, moreover, a feeling for nature at once particular and general, earthly and unearthly, and an individual sensitivity and suppleness of rhythm…. It is [Marvell's] blending of the metaphysical and the classical which makes 'To His Coy Mistress' stand out as it does even in such an age of love poetry" (Bush, English Literature in the Early 18th Century, 158-63). Very few of Marvell's poems, and none of his important metaphysical poems, were published in his lifetime. Evidence exists that the woman who called herself "Mary Marvell," and who had this collection published "according to the exact Copies of my late dear Husband, under his own Hand-Writing, being found since his Death among his other Papers," may only have been Marvell's housekeeper, claiming to be his widow in order to inherit a small sum.Pforzheimer 671.       Paris: Par Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1681. - 4pp. Quarto, on a folded folio sheet. Very minor soiling. Contemporary inscription. Fine. An early French decree relating to America, of particular importance for the French West Indies. An ongoing problem of the sugar colonies in the West Indies was feeding the slave work force. Throughout the era of slavery, food was imported from Europe and North America, as it was cheaper and easier than using labor on the spot to raise it. This act exempts from warehousing charges Irish and other beef and all items required for sugar refinery destined for exportation to America. A variant of Wroth 125, which was printed thirty years later. OCLC locates only one copy, at NYPL. From the library of Cardinal Étienne Charles de Loménie de Brienne (1727-94), Minister of Louis XVI, Archbishop of Toulouse and of Sens. A friend of Voltaire and a member of the Académie Française, Brienne wielded significant power as head of the Finance Ministry, which earned him many enemies. He died in prison during the French Revolution, despite having renounced Catholicism in 1793 (presumably as an attempt to save his life). WROTH, ACTS OF FRENCH ROYAL ADMINISTRATION 125 (ref).         Some proposals for the imployment of the poor, and for the prevention of idleness and the consequence thereof, begging. A practice so dishonourable to the nation, and to the Christian religion. In a letter to a friend by T.F

London, printed by J. Grover, and are to be sold by Francis Smith, at the Elephant and Castle, and Brab. Aylmer, at the Three Pigeons in Cornhill. 1681. 4to., engraved frontispiece, (2) + 46pp., a fine, crisp, copy with good margins, in old (18th century?) marbled wrappers. Second, much expanded edition: scarce. Wing F.972. Goldsmiths 2435. Kress 1534. Massie 1049. Thomas Firmin (1632-1697) had learned to distrust mere almsgiving and made it his business to enquire into the condition of the poor by personal investigation and to reduce the causes of social distress by economic effort. His first philanthropic experiment was occasioned by the trade disorganisation of the plague year (1665). He provided employment at making up clothing for hands thrown out of work. Other schemes involved the building of storage space by the river for corn and coals to be retailed to the poor in hard times at cost price. Early in 1676 he had started a workhouse in Little Britain, for the employment of the poor in the linen manufacture. Firmin employed as many as 1700 spinners, besides flax dressers and weavers. His arrangements for the comfort and cleanliness of his hands and for the industrial training of children rescued from the streets was admirable. But the scheme never paid. Firmin sold his linens at cost price and the annual loss on the venture was £200. In addition to his philanthropic efforts on behalf of the poor, Firmin was a prison philanthropist and worked hard to alleviate the condition of prisoners, particularly those imprisoned for debt. The present work is his most important and best known publication. It contains, amongst other things, an account of his own Work-House.

Paris, Etienne Michallet, 1681.. 8vo. (10), 56, (4), 370, (28) pp. Near contemporary vellum with giltstamped spine label. All edges sprinkled in red.. First edition. The editor, Joseph Labrosse, "was born in Toulouse in 1636 and entered a Carmelite order, taking the name of Fr. Angelus of St Joseph. In 1662 he went to Rome and studied Arabic for two years before travelling to Isfahan to study Persian. While in Iran, he used medicine as a means of propagating Christianity and in the process read many Arabic and Persian books on medicine and 'visited the houses of the learned people of Isfahan and paid hundreds of visits to the shops of the druggists, the pharmacists, and the chemists.' After returning to France in 1678 he published his 'Pharmacopoea persica', which consisted of a Latin translation of a Persian book on compound remedies written in the previous century by Muzaffar ibn Muhammad al-Husayni (d. 1556), with additional comments by Labrosse" (in: I. Loudon [ed.], Western Medicine [1997], p. 52f.). The first, and largest, part comprises Lubieniecki's correspondence with 40 of the leading astronomers of his time, including Guericke, Hevelius and Schott, about the 1664-5 comet. The fine engravings consist of celestial maps showing the paths of comets and the figures of the constellations traversed. 'Since each map represents the observations of a different astronomer, taken together they illustrate the variety of cartographic traditions popular during the seventeenth century. On many of the maps the choice of constellations, of constellation style, and of constellation names are strongly reminiscent of the celestial globes of Blaeu and Hondius. Several other maps carry the Judaeo-Christian constellations introduced by Plancius. From Rome, Kircher sent a map derived from those of Grienberger. On only a few maps are the stars identified by Bayer letters. None of the maps reflects any of the traditions popular during the previous century' (Warner, The sky explored, p 164).Stanislaw Lubieniecki (1623-1675) was born in Rakow (now in Germany); he pursued astronomy, and in particular the study of comets, as a hobby. A Polish nobleman who spent much of his life in Hamburg, he is perhaps best known for his Historia reformationis polonicae (History of the Polish Reformation). This second issue comprises the sheets of the first issue, with only the title-pages reprinted. The engraved frontispieces have small strips of paper pasted over the original dates, 1666 and 1668.OCLC records the following locations in the US: Yale, NYPL, Adler, University of Chicago, and Duke
