Kusel, Melchior. Bible Engravings
Augustano - Nurnberg: Melchior Kusel - Johann Leonhard Buggel, 1679. First edition [1679-80]. In German. Imperfect copy with an interesting provenance. Book of beautifully produced engravings of scenes from the Old and New Testaments, previously owned by George W. Van Horne [1833-1895], appointed by Abraham Lincoln as US Consul at Marsailles. Includes an 1870 letter signed by Van Horne discussing how he purchased the book from a certain bookseller "of the highest reputation for integrity" and that it was one of only thirty copies printed, which we now strongly suspect to be untrue. What the bookseller also neglected to inform him was that there are 11 (of 249) plates missing, with no evidence that they were ever bound in. Full contemporary leather with red spine label, raised spine bands with compartments decorated with a pomegranate motif, a total of 238 plates printed on one side only, six page of text, title page, dedication, engraved pages dividing the sections, colophon. Covers rubbed at the edges with partial surface crack to the front joint, covers well attached, text block sound, partially removed and unidentiable armorial bookplate on the front pastedown, neatly written note in French (appears to relate to a book catalogue dated 1827) on the front free endpaper, pages clean with occasional light foxing, chips to two edges, long horizontal closed tear to one section title, two plates bound out of order.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.

Titus Oates; Adam Elliot; W Bedloe; Mr Miles Prance et al.
A true narrative of the horrid plot and conspiracy of the popish party against the life of His sacred Majesty, the government, and the Protestant religion: with a list of such noblemen, gentlemen, and others that were the conspirators: and the head-officers both civil an military, that were to effect it. Published by the order of the Right Honourable the Lords spiritual and temporal in Parliament assembled. Humbly presented to His most excellent Majesty. By Titus Otes, D.D. [with] The King's evidence justifi'd: or Doctor Oates's vindication of himself, and the reality of the plot, against a traiterous libel, called The compendium; contrived by the Jesuits, to the dishonour of the King and kingdom. [with] A modest vindication of Titus Oates the Salamanca-doctor from perjury: or An essay to demonstrate him only forsworn in several instances. By Adam Elliot, Master of Arts, and a priest of the Church of England. [with] A narrative and impartial discovery of the horrid Popish plot: carried on for the burning and destroying the cities of London and Westminster, with their suburbs, &c. Setting forth the several consults, orders and resolutions of the Jesuites, &c. concerning the same. And divers depositions and informations, relating thereunto. Never before printed. By Capt. William Bedloe. Lately engaged in that horrid design, and one of the popish committee for carrying on such fires. [with] A true narrative and discovery of several very remarkable passages relating to the horrid Popish Plot: as they fell within the knowledge of Mr Miles Prance of Covent-Garden, goldsmith. Viz. I. His depositions concerning the plot in general, and a particular design against the life of His Sacred Majesty. II. The whole proceedings touching the murther of Sir Edmundbury Godfrey, and the particular circumstances thereof. III. A conspiracy to murther the Right Honourable the Earl of Shaftsbury. IV. The traiterous intrigues and immoralities of divers popish priests. Published by
Various, 1679. Condition: Good. Eight extraordinarily scarce works on the Popish Plot with several not seen at auction since the 1970's. Comprising of eight works bound as one. The first five pamphlets regard Titus Oates, William Bedloe and Miles Prance with their fictional 'Popish Plots'. These gentleman worked hard to convince the monarchy and general public that the Catholics and Jesuits intended to assassinate the King, Charles II, implicating many innocent people who lost their lives. The final three works focuses solely on Elizabeth Cellier, an accused Catholic who was imprisoned for her involvement in the so-called 'Meal-Tub Plot' against James II (Charles II's successor). Titus Oates, also known as Titus the liar was an English perjurer who fabricated the 'Popish Plot'. This plot was a supposed Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II. The first work to this book, 'A True Narrative...' is the first edition, and is Oates asserting and declaring this plot, which led to the executions of at least 22 men. He was requested to publish his own narrative of the conspiracy which then took this form. Oates took advantage of the already existing Anti-Catholic sentiment which had flared from the King's marriage to the Catholic princess, Catherine of Portugal. Oates and William Bedloe even tried to implicate the Queen in this plot. It later transpired that this plot was false and Oates was tried for perjury. 'A True Narrative of the Horrid Popish Plot..' is lacking the frontispiece and the first three leaves after title page, work begins on the third page of the dedication … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Guillim
London: Covers loose, a few pages loose. "A Display of Heraldry", by John Guillim (1565-1621). This book was published in nine editions between 1610 and 1724, and each edition seems to have had variations. It is considered the master work on the subject of heraldry. This copy, rebound, is Edition Five, published in 1679, and dedicated to Charles II, King of England, during his lifetime. This book contains approximately 150 individually hand painted illustrations of the coats of arms of British nobility. Approximately 9" x 14" in size, weight of nearly 8 pounds. There is a bookplate from Castle Goring on the back of the front cover. A book of great rarity, in any edition, and an essential reference work for those interested in heraldry. It is also a reference work for those who collect Chinese and Japanese pottery and porcelain as heraldic symbols were frequently used, particularly on Chinese export items. I am in the process of assisting with the sale of the reference library of a serious collector of Chinese and Japanese porcelain and pottery items. CANTELLI, Giacomo (1643-1695)
In folio (mm 477x325). [Click Below for Full Description]

The traiterous intrigues and immoralities of divers popish priests. Published by
London: Various, 1679. 'A True Narrative of the Horrid Popish Plot..' is lacking the frontispiece and the first three leaves after title page, work begins on the third page of the dedication to Charle … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam: See pictures. Some rubbing with a dot on the front board, and a few marks. Corners are bumped with paste boards slightly exposed. Some color loss at joints and edges. I think I can see some leather polish in the pores. Gilt edges have faded a little.Inside there is a pencil note on the back of the free front endpaper "4 p 8 s ½". Black spot above title page in upper margin. Annotations in top margin of leaves A2 and A3. Ink dot at fore edge of pages of 40-43. Occasional spots of foxing and soiling (finger smudges along edges) throughout, light.A very handsome small work, whose beauty shows through as a testament to both Padeloup and the Elzevir family. Bound by the bookbinder to King Louis XV, Padeloup, a beautiful 1679 Elzevir family edition of the seminal The Imitation of Christ (in Latin) by Thomas a Kempis, with Dutch Gilt endpapers. This book is discussed by a Padeloup/Dubuisson expert, Mr. Miller, at the website Virtual Bookbindings. I can provide the web address upon request (ebay no longer allows me to put web addresses in ads). About the Binder "Antoine Michel Padeloup was made binder to the king, Louis XV. (17I5--1748), in 1733, after Boyet's death; he placed his mark on books belonging to Queen Maria Leczinska, the Dauphin, D'Hoym, Bonnier de la Mosson, and the Marquise de Pompadour. Padeloup is noted for good solid binding; the decorations he used, though poor in conception, are marvels of careful execution." [BIBLE - DUTCH].
Cf. Biblia Sacra 1679.B.dut.JvSwid.a (1 copy of other 1679 bible ed.); Le Long, p. 887 (other 1679 ed.?); Poortman, Bijbel en prent I, p. 237 (other 1679 ed.?); STCN 098385259 (same copy as Biblia Sacra); not in Darlow & Moule; STCN. Possibly unrecorded edition of the Dutch States translation of the Bible (Old and New Testament), published by the company of Amsterdam Bible publishers established in 1675. The company published another edition in the same format in the same year (surviving in one copy as catalogued by STCN and Biblia Sacra), but the collation clearly differs from that of the present edition. Le Long and Poortman record one these editions, without giving details, but they presumably knew the copy described by STCN and Biblia Sacra. The States translation was the standard text for the Dutch Reformed Church and many other Dutch Protestants from 1637 to 1773. The present copy is interleaved and contains numerous contemporary manuscript annotations. They are primarily references to other religious texts, but also include a few comments and alternative translations. At the end are seven pages with longer manuscript notes in Latin, with some occasional Greek and Hebrew. The bindings heavily rubbed, but structurally sound, and internally in very good condition.
