HERMANT
A Paris: 1679. *** [English translation available upon request. Japan map - Durant after Tavernier
1679. Coloured copper engraving assembled from two sheets by J. Durant after a drawing of Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, 1679. Plate size: 52 x 77 cm. The map occurs only in the first edition of Taverniers "Recueil de plusieurs relations". For later editions and/or translations the map was made smaller. It shows many unusual comments about Japan. It contains legends about the nature of the country, e.g. where gold is mined. Okasaki is said to have the most beautiful women. In Lake Biwa one can catch lots of salmon. Worthless youths are sent to an island off Kyushu, where they have to work etc. From a cartographic perspective the most important innovation is the inclusion of the route of the Dutch. At Firando it states that this where they had stayed initially. At Kisma " a different name for Deshima " it says that this is where the Dutch are. Also some Dutch ships are depicted. The map is handsomely framed using the highest standards (UV protective glass, acid free paper, wooden, i.e. strong and water resistant, reverse side). Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605 - 1689), was born in Paris, where his father Gabriel and uncle Melchior, protestants from Antwerp, pursued the profession of geographers and engravers. The conversations he heard in his father's house inspired Tavernier with an early desire to travel, and in his sixteenth year he had already visited England, the Low Countries and Germany. He was eager to visit the East; and he found the opportunity to join two French fathers, M. de Chapes and M. de St Liebau, who had received a mission to the Levant. In their company he reached … [Click Below for Full Description]

Behn, Aphra [1640 - 1689]
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson at the Judges Head in Chancery-Lane near Fleet-street, 1679. London: Printed for Jacob Tonson at the Judges Head in Chancery-Lane near Fleet-street, 1679. 1st edition (NCBEL II, 756; O'Donnell A8.1a; TCI 350; Wing B-1732). Printed self-wrappers, sewn. Housed in a blue quarter leather custom case. Pamphlet: some paper restoration to leaves along sewing. Usual bit of age-toning, browning & staining to paper. Very Good. Case - Fine.. [6], 69, [1 (blank)] pp. 4to: A - K^4. D2 missigned as C2. 8-3/8" x 6-1/2" [213 mm x 165 mm]. Behn generally regarded as the first Englishwoman to make her living as a writer. A covert Catholic, she spent a year in Dutch Guiana before marrying a Dutchman and going to Holland to spy for Charles II. After returning to the UK, she was jailed for debt, subsequently turning to writing to pay her bills. "Set in Rome, The Feign'd Curtizans was written and performed after the advent of the Popish Plot. The play is sympathetic to Catholicism during a time when declaring one's Protestant beliefs was 'politically expedient'. Behn uses the English characters of Sir Signall Buffoon and Mr. Tickletext to satirize their nationalism and fear of Italian 'Popery,' while portraying several Italian characters of quality as honorable and virtuous. Behn 'emphasizes that, while Whiggish middle-class patriots are to be derided, upper-class good taste is international.'" [Wiki] Says Blain, in FEMINIST COMPANION, "Her plots treat unwilling marriage, financial malpractice, and women either victimized or triumphantly reversing … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beaumont, Francis (1584-1616); Fletcher, John (1579-1625)
London: Printed by J. Macock [and H. Hills], for John Martyn, Henry Herringman, Richard Marriot, 1679. London: London: Printed by J. Macock [and H. Hills], for John Martyn, Henry Herringman, Richard Marriot, 1679. Full leather. Near Fine. Marshall, William. First edition thus; folio; [10], 280, 279-578, 557, [1]pp. In contemporary full speckled calf (with only the lightest of wear), finely respined in matching calf over six raised spine bands with gilt lettered red morocco spine label to second compartment. Portrait frontispiece barely perceptibly window-mounted on matching antique paper, two small marginal closed tears to first 2 leaves, a delightfully clean and unmarked example. The first collection of Beaumont and Fletcher's plays appeared in 1647; this subsequent 1679 edition contained another 18 plays including The Two Noble Kinsmen, substantial parts of which modern scholarship has concluded to be the work of Shakespeare, with the rest by John Fletcher. (The consensus is that Shakespeare wrote Act I, scenes 1-3; Act II, scene 1; Act III, scene 1; Act V, scene 1, lines 34-173, and scenes 3 and 4). The play was omitted from Shakespeare's First and subsequent folios, was first printed as a quarto in 1634, with its next appearance in this 1679 collection. An exceptionally attractive copy presented in twentieth century custom made felt-lined slipcase. Wing B1582; Gregg III, p. 1018; ESTC R13766.

Yosef ben Shlomo Calahora of Posen (Poznan)(1601-1696) (Yosef ben shlomo ben Shmuel ben Shlomo)(joseph ben Solomon)
Yochanan Christoph Beckman, Frankfurt am Oder, 1679. In Hebrew. 16 leaves. 20 x 16 cm. Joseph Ben Solomon Calahora (called Joseph Darshan ; 1601?1696), rabbi and author. Calahora was born in Posen, and was a grandson of Israel Samuel b. Solomon Calahorra. He lived in Belaya Tserkov, where he witnessed the suffering of the Jews in 1648, at the time of the Chmielnicki pogroms. After returning to his home town, he served there as rabbi, but lived the later years of his life as an ascetic, devoting all his time to study. He wrote Yesod Yosef (Frankfurt on the Main, 1679; published with additions in Berlin, 1739; frequently republished). This small ethical work became one of the most popular ethical writings in Eastern Europe. It instructs the reader as to what life to lead in order to avoid nocturnal emission, which was considered a sin, and how to cleanse himself if it did happen. He uses the sin as a motif to build a complete system of Jewish ethics and purity, based on the Kabbalah. The book is supplemented by a collection of notes on different subjects and quotations from old sources by R. Joseph b. Gei. A commentary on it by Raphael Unna of Morocco appeared under the title Yesod Ma'aravi (Jerusalem, 1896). There has also been published his Sedeh Bokhim, containing homiletic explanations to the Perek Shirah and the tikkun ?azot and miscellaneous writings of his brother, Isaac Lelower (Frankfurt on the Oder, 1679). A responsum of his is mentioned in *Eliakim Goetz b. Meir's Even ha-Shoham (Dyhernfurth, 1735). Several of his homiletical treatises remain in manuscript. [Attrib … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beaumont, Francis (1584-1616); Fletcher, John (1579-1625)
London: Printed by J. Macock [and H. Hills], for John Martyn, Henry Herringman, Richard Marriot, 1679. (The consensus is that Shakespeare wrote Act I, scenes 1?3; Act II, scene 1; Act III, scene 1; Act V, scene 1, lines 34-173, and scenes 3 and 4). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Copponay de Grimaldy, Denis de Maubec.
Dijon, J. Ressayre, 1679. 12mo. 84 pp. 19th-century aubergine morocco, gold-tooled spine and board edges, gilt edges. Extremely rare treatise on a panacea by Denis de Maubec, de Copponay de Grimaldy (1623?-1717). This curious author was alchemist, personal physician to the king of Sardinia and founder of the l'Académie chimique ducale-royale de Savoie. He is known from a few short treaties from the end of the 17th century and his posthumous work published by Jourdan de Pellerin in 1745. While his name seems to have been well known in the past - at least until the 19th century, when he is described as the "fameux charlatan Grimaldi de Copponay" - actual information on the author and his work appears to be scarce. - With the bookplate of the 19th-century French bibliophile Henri Joliet from Dijon, with his monogram CBMHI (Claude Bernard Marguerite Henri Joliet) and the motto "Plus penser que dire", and a manuscript note that he acquired the volume in Lyon in 1843. A faint dampstain at the head throughout and at the foot of the title-page, but otherwise in very good condition. Brunet III, 1539. WorldCat (4 copies). Cf. Brüning 4477 (collected works). L'opera, fondata sulle cronache di Tito Livio, è scritta in uno stile semplice e nitido che porta a una narrazione vivace. Mainwaring, Sir Thomas
1679. Interesting for Its Discussion of Early Common-Law Authorities on Marriage Mainwaring, Sir Thomas [1623-1689]. The Legitimacy Of Amicia, Daughter Of Hugh Cyveliok Earl Of Chester, Clearly Proved. With Full Answers to All Objections that Have at Any Time been Made Against the Same. London: Printed for Sam. Lowndes, 1679. [x], 171, [1] pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4"). Contemporary speckled calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands to spine, marbled edges. Moderate rubbing to extremities, boards beginning to separate, but secured by cords. Title page printed in red and black. Moderate toning to text, small piece excised from rear endleaf, internally clean. * Only edition. A sequel to the author's A Defence of Amicia. The 8-page preface gives a useful account of the endless pamphlet-war that following the publication of Defence in 1673, including an account of the controversy itself and the publications of Mainwaring's opponent, Peter Leicester. Amicia, the author's grandmother, was the wife of Ralph Mainwaring. Leicester, another descendant of Amicia, claimed that she was a bastard. This tract, like the others, is of legal interest for its discussion of the early common law authorities on marriage. Both authors had been students at Gray's Inn. The issue was eventually decided in Mainwaring's favor. OCLC locates 13 copies in North America, 1 in a law library (Ohio State). English Short-Title Catalogue R21678.

1679. Click here to view a short video presentation. Amerique Meridionale.(World map- Australia- Carpentaria- Van Diemens Land- New Zealand) Issued 1679, Paris by P. Du Val. Issued as part of a now very rare four-sheet wall map, this sheet offered alone. Any and all sheets are scarce in the market as are most folio sheet Duval maps of this era. Attractive, fascinating and rare 17th century folio sheet map, with original outline hand color. Of note for the depictions of a partial outline of a single New Zealand island as well as an entirely erroneous placement of Van Diemens island and Australia in relationship to NZ. Also note the huge long incomplete coastline east of NZ, which may represent a hypothetical Southern Continent which had been the source of speculation for years. This giant southern continent then continues east below the southern tip of So. America. As noted by Shirley, the map was issued separately and was engraved in such a way as allowing the top portion with title to be trimmed off so the sheets could all be joined. A full example is shown in Shirley's Mapping of the World, 489. Video captures the condition in detail, old paper repairs on reverse, some damp staining, spots of color offset, paper slightly soft along edges, blank margins trimmed down to at or slightly within neat lines, etc. Rare enough that allowances must be made for any example in any condition. Sheet measures c. 17 1/8" x 23". Printed area measures c. 16" x 22 1/4". Shirley, Mapping of the World, 489 (noting it was also published separately). Tooley, Mapping of Australia, curiously not … [Click Below for Full Description]

An interesting letter discussing the persecution of Roman Catholics in England. The Church of England had taken over as the standard Church in England after the 1530s and Henry VIII's separation from the Roman church. After this, Catholics became persecuted within England. An example of fervent anti-Catholic attitude of England at this time was the fabrication of the Popish Plot by Titus Oates, which alleged that there was a solid and extensive Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II. Oates is referenced to by the author of this treatise, mentioning Oates' plot as an example of the persecution against the Catholics. The author references the innocent men who were killed after suspicion that was thrown upon them by Titus Oates, with at least fifteen men being killed from 1678-1681 due to Oates.
