(Titus Oates), Popish Plot. Charles Chetwind, et al.
London: Various. Bound volume, quarto, of 11 trials associated with the Popish Plot of 1679-81, ca. 350 pp total. In later leather binding, boards detached, contents very good and clean. The Popish Plot was a fictitious claim of a Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II. It resulted in an anti-Catholic hysteria and led the the trials and executions of nearly two dozen falsely accused men. The instigator of the Popish Plot, Titus Oates, was eventually convicted on charges of perjury. In case the titles were cut off in the title field, here they are again: 1. The Tryals and condemnation of Thomas White, alias Whitebread, ...William Harcourt,..John Fenwick, procurator for the Jesuits in England, John Gavan alias Gawen and Anthony Turner, all Jesuits and priests (1679) 2. A narrative of the depositions of Robert Jenison Esq with other material evidences, plainly proving that Mr. William Ireland, lately executed for high treason, was in London the nineteenth of August, 1678... 3. The tryals of Sir George Wakeman, Barronet, William Marshall, William Rumley, and James Corker, Benedictine monks, for high treason (1679) 4. The Tryall of Richard Langhorn... 5. The Tryal and Conviction of Thomas Knox and John Lane... (1680) 6. The Speech and Carriage of Stephen Colledge at Oxford (1681) 7. The Arraignment, Tryal and Condemnation of Stephen Colledge for High Treason (1681) 8. The Tryal and Condemnation of George Busby for High-Treason (1681) 9. Thomas a Kempis
Amsterdam: Elzevir, 1679. See pictures. Some rubbing with a dot on the front board, and a few marks. Corners are bumped with paste boards slightly exposed. Some color loss at joints and edges. I think I can see some leather polish in the pores. Gilt edges have faded a little.Inside there is a pencil note on the back of the free front endpaper "4 p 8 s ½". Black spot above title page in upper margin. Annotations in top margin of leaves A2 and A3. Ink dot at fore edge of pages of 40-43. Occasional spots of foxing and soiling (finger smudges along edges) throughout, light.A very handsome small work, whose beauty shows through as a testament to both Padeloup and the Elzevir family. Bound by the bookbinder to King Louis XV, Padeloup, a beautiful 1679 Elzevir family edition of the seminal The Imitation of Christ (in Latin) by Thomas a Kempis, with Dutch Gilt endpapers. This book is discussed by a Padeloup/Dubuisson expert, Mr. Miller, at the website Virtual Bookbindings. I can provide the web address upon request (ebay no longer allows me to put web addresses in ads). About the Binder "Antoine Michel Padeloup was made binder to the king, Louis XV. (17I5--1748), in 1733, after Boyet's death; he placed his mark on books belonging to Queen Maria Leczinska, the Dauphin, D'Hoym, Bonnier de la Mosson, and the Marquise de Pompadour. Padeloup is noted for good solid binding; the decorations he used, though poor in conception, are marvels of careful execution." Browning, rebound in modern half morocco with marbled boards, gilt lettered morocco title label to spine. Scarce first publication. ESTC R5964 ‘Anonymous. By John Oldham. In verse. Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), O243 Brooks, Harold F. Bibliography of John Oldham, 3. ' ODNB ‘...His first poem to achieve renown was 'Aude a liquid. Ode' (written in 1676 at Croydon), which circulated in manuscript and appeared in a pirated printed edition in 1679 under the misleading title A Satyr Against Vertue. This was imagined to be Rochester's speech on smashing the phallic glass sundials in the king's privy garden in 1675, and its satirical impersonation of Rochester's libertine stance drew an appreciative visit from the earl and his entourage. The 'Dithyrambique on Drinking: Suppos'd to be Spoken by Rochester at the Guinny-Club' and 'Sardanapalus', an erotic heroic extravaganza too obscene for publication, completed a trio of poems satirically mimicking libertine attitudes with such bravura that some readers failed to see their ironic purpose...'. This is the third folio edition of Spenser's poetry but the first to contain his complete works, including his prose "View of the Tate of Ireland" and Bathurst's Latin translation of "The Shepherd's Calendar". It has been suggested by the DNB that John Dryden was the anonymous editor of this edition.Edmund Spenser is probably best known for his allegorical poem The Faerie Queene, at one time the longest poem in the English language. The poem was published with the help of Sir Walter Raleigh, who persuaded Spenser to accompany him back to England to present the completed portion of the work to Queen Elizabeth herself. Another item, Mother Hubberd's Tale, caused the authorities to withdraw unsold copies of the volume because it contained a covert attack on Lord Burghley, who was one of the most powerful figures of the co … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johann Weichard Valvasor
Schloss Wagensperg/Bogensperg.
Padeloup is noted for good solid binding; the decorations he used, though poor in conception, are marvels of careful execution." Thomas a Kempis
Padeloup is noted for good solid binding; the decorations he used, though poor in conception, are marvels of careful execution." (A History of the Art of Bookbinding, Brassington, 1884) Although this copy does not have a Padeloup ticket, an almost exactly … [Click Below for Full Description]
