POLITI (Puliti), Alessandro. [Click Below for Full Description]

Fronsac, France, 1679-1680. Determining Compensation for Madame de Corbin's Property [Manuscript]. [Case Concerning the Seizure of Property from Madame de Corbin, A Widow]. Rennes. Saint-Aignon, France, 1679-1680. 160 ff. Quarto (9-3/4" x 7"). Contemporary limp vellum, ties lacking, faint hand-lettered annotation to front cover. Moderate soiling and a few stains, worming in a few places, rodent loss to lower rear corner and corners of 52 preceding leaves with no loss to text. Text in large neat hand to rectos and versos of all but the final leaf, each section endorsed by a stamp of the Generalite de Bordeaux, the administrative division that included Sait-Aignon. $1,500. * Carefully organized and clearly written, this is a fair copy of notes taken for a case concerning the seizure of real estate from a Madame de Corbin, a widow, by a Pierre de Gombauld, a local minor noble. It records the sale records of various parcels of land near Saint-Aignon, each endorsed with an official stamp. Presumably, these records were collected to help the court to determine an appropriate amount of financial compensation for Madame de Corbin's land.

Behn, Mrs. A. [Aphra]
London: Jacob Tonson at the Judges Head in Chancery Lane, 1679. First edition. One of two variant imprints with no priority according to ESTC, the present listing only Jacob Tonson. Printed self-wrappers sewn at spine, measuring 165 x 210mm. Collates [8], 71, [1, Epilogue]: complete. Some paper restoration near stitching of spine and along the header of the title page not affecting text. Occasional light toning and foxing throughout, as expected in an imprint of this period. Small nick to the header of the prologue and loss to top corner of page 3-4, neither affecting text. Housed in a custom case. In all, a pleasing and complete copy of this scarce work by England's first professional female playwright. ESTC reports only 15 copies in the U.S., with this being the only one on the market. The Feign'd Curtizans last appeared at auction in 1974. Almost a decade into her career as England's first professional female playwright, Aphra Behn continued to gain confidence in pushing against the social strictures confining her countrywomen. The Feign'd Curtizans is part of this larger project, depicting virtuous sisters Marcella and Cornelia who leave their lives as respectable ladies of the court and pose as courtesans to escape the fates planned for them by their father. For while Marcella is in love with Sir Henry Fillamore, she has been promised in marriage to Octavio; and Cornelia as a younger daughter has been committed to holy orders and convent life. Scholars have turned to this play as both an example of Behn's engagement in high court politics -- here, tapping into conc … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Behn, Mrs. A.
Scholars have turned to this play as both an example of Behn's engagement in high court politics -- here, tapping into concerns … [Click Below for Full Description]

This work is a quarto, with the signatures running as [A4], B4. ESTC citation number R218183. Collated from the ESTC, complete. An interesting letter discussing the persecution of Roman Catholics in England. The Church of England had taken over as the standard Church in England after the 1530s and Henry VIII's separation from the Roman church. After this, Catholics became persecuted within England. An example of fervent anti-Catholic attitude of England at this time was the fabrication of the Popish Plot by Titus Oates, which alleged that there was a solid and extensive Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II. Oates is referenced to by the author of this treatise, mentioning Oates' plot as an example of the persecution against the Catholics. The author references the innocent men who were killed after suspicion that was thrown upon them by Titus Oates, with at least fifteen men being killed from 1678-1681 due to Oates. Diggs, Dudley; Digges, Sir Dudley
1679. An Artful Defense of King Charles I Diggs, Dudley [1613-1643]. The Unlawfulness of Subjects Taking up Arms Against Their Soveraigne, In What Case Soever. Together with Answers to All Objections. A Work Very Seasonable for These Times, And May Serve as a Curb to the Treasonable Practices of Jesuits and Other State-Incendiaries. London: Printed for Peter Parker, 1679. [viii], 144, 155-170, 137-168 pp. Pagination irregular. Text complete. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4-1/4"). Recent period-style three-quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt-edged raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Moderate toning to text, faint dampstaining to a few leaves. Ex-library. Small inkstamp to title page and one other leaf. A handsome copy. * Fifth and final edition. Derived in part from Bracton, Diggs's eloquent defense of the passive obedience of subjects contends that the king is under law as a moral proposition only, which precludes justified rebellion. It was originally published in 1644 as a defense of Charles II. This 1679 reissue was probably a response to the decision of Charles II to dissolve Parliament to prevent its impeachment of Lord Danby, who supervised the investigation into the "Popish Plot." Danby dismissed the plot as a fabrication, which angered Parliament. English Short-Title Catalogue R14579.

MAIMONIDES, Moses
Venales prostant apud Mosem Pit. 1679 1st ed HEBREW Moses Maimonides Jewish LAW Hebrew + Prideaux Latin Islam Moses Maimonides was one of the most important medieval Jewish philosophers. He studied a wide variety of topics including astronomy, medicine, Jewish theology, and Egyptian and Jewish history. It is curious, though, that he has become revered by both Jewish and Islamic groups for his contributions to sciences and philosophy. One of this more notable works was his extensive book on Jewish religious law. Jewish scholar Humphrey Prideaux translated many of these works and added his own commentary. This work, published in Oxford in 1679, is a work on laws relating to the poor, paupers, homeless, and beggars and includes Prideaux’s Latin translation and commentary. The Legitimacy Of Amicia, Daughter Of Hugh Cyveliok Earl Of Chester, Clearly Proved. With Full Answers to All Objections that Have at Any Time been Made Against the Same. London: Printed for Sam. Lowndes, 1679. [x], 171, [1] pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4"). Contemporary speckled calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands to spine, marbled edges. Moderate rubbing to extremities, boards beginning to separate, but secured by cords. Title page printed in red and black. Moderate toning to text, small piece excised from rear endleaf, internally clean. * Only edition. A sequel to the author's A Defence of Amicia. The 8-page preface gives a useful account of the endless pamphlet-war that following the publication of Defence in 1673, including an account of the controversy itself and the publications of Mainwaring's opponent, Peter Leicester. Amicia, the author's grandmother, was the wife of Ralph Mainwaring. Leicester, another descendant of Amicia, claimed that she was a bastard. This tract, like the others, is of legal interest for its discussion of the early common law authorities on marriage. Both authors had been students at Gray's Inn. The issue was eventually decided in Mainwaring's favor. OCLC locates 13 copies in North America, 1 in a law library (Ohio State). English Short-Title Catalogue R21678.

[Click Below for Full Description]

MAIMONIDES, Moses
Oxonii, e Theatro Sheldonia: Venales prostant apud Mosem Pit, 1679. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Moses Maimonides was one of the most important medieval Jewish philosophers. This work, published in Oxford in 1679, is a work on laws relating to the poor, paupers, homeless, and beggars and includes Prideaux's Latin translation and commentary. [Attributes: First Edition]
