Krivatsy 7607; Caillet 7276; Rubin, Sir Kenelm Digby 210; Thorndike VIII, 419-21; VD17 39:117783F. - Wohl erste Ausgabe.

MERCKLIN, Georg Abraham (?-1700). -
Nürnberg, Zieger, 1679.Small 8vo. Contemp. marbled boards; corners worn, extremities of spine defective. With an engr. frontispiece. (26), 112, (4) pp.; a fresh copy. First (only ?) edition of one of the earliest treatises on blood transfusions and its history. Mercklin, a German doctor, describes the attempts of some contemporaries, such as Andreas Libavius, Giovanni Colle, Richard Lower, J. B. Dennis, etc., and examines various kinds of transfusions (also from animals to man!). It is not surprising, however, that in view of the knowledge of the time, he emphasizes the dangers of the operation and is doubtful about its usefulness. Osler 3384. Waller 6748. Eimas 653. Krivatsy 7774. Bound at the beginning are four works on haematology by Moritz Hoffman (1622-98), mentioned by Mercklin as ?fautor meus venerandus?, published at Altdorf in 1663 and later, each one of about 70 pp., three of which are in Krivatsy (5891, 5887, and 5890).

Nicolas VISSCHER II (1649 - 1702)
Incisione in rame con coloritura piena, piega perfettamente restaurata nella parte centrale inferiore, in generale in buone condizioni Bibliografia: Shirley, Mapping of the World, 486. Dimensioni 535x430. Rare world map showing California as an island. This map may well have been produced by Nicolaas Visscher II. Nicolas Visscher was one of a family of prominent map makers and engravers active throughout the seventeenth century and responsible for some of the finest works of the 'Golden Age of Dutch Cartography'. Geographically the map is almost identical to the Visscher-Berchem work of 1658, the only difference being the reduced extent of Anian in the smaller … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAMERARIUS, J.
Mainz, L. Bourgeat, 1679. 8vo (167 x 95mm). With 1 folded engraved frontispiece and 400 engraved circular plates. 18th century mottled calf, spine with red label. The fourth collected edition, the first part concerns botanical emblems. 'These curious prints are of particular interest in that they precede even the first known botanical woodcuts. Almost a century and a half elapses before the publication of a small book of emblems by J. Camerarius the Younger, which contains about a hundred attractive little etched roundels of plants set against landscape backgrounds' (Blunt p. 99, for the first edition). The work is illustrated with metal engravings; the charming plates in part 1, all by Hans Sibmacher, are circular and depict plants in front of attractive landscapes. Joachim Camerarius, the Younger (1543-1598) was famous for his immense botanical knowledge and his fine plant collections and botanical garden. The remaining 300 plates show birds, snakes, amphibians, fishes, mammals and insects. Nissen BBI, 312.

Ephemera
The Andrew Jackson, a 1679 ton medium clipper, was built in Mystic in 1855. She was a fast sailer but, contrary to what this handbill would imply, set no records on any of her passages. On the date of the voyage advertised here - December 16, 1861 - her captain was Johnson. It is interesting to note that, just at this time, naval action in the Civil War was ramping up. The USS Constitution arrived at Ship Island at the mouth of the Mississippi River carrying the 26th Massachusetts Regiment to New Orleans, Great Britain began their embargo on US exports, and the naval blockade of the Confederate coast began to show results. This might explain the military theme of the handbill. However, despite the turmoil of the war, the text states that the Andrew Jackson might depart “by Christmas day, but certainly on or before the 1st of January.” The ship was sold to the British in 1863 and was lost in the Gaspar Straits in 1868. This handbill measures 9 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches and has a wonderful image of Jackson astride his horse, American flag behind, which also appeared on the 1862 clipper ship sailing card for the Andrew Jackson. That card also advertised her as “The Fastest Ship in the World!” Both the card and the handbill were printed by Nesbitt, of New York. The card is scarce, but the handbill is a rare, possibly unique, survival. In Fine condition.

Bibl. danica III, sp. 1517. Thesaurus 632. Warmholtz 5055, not. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BRASSINNE, Emile.
A separately paginated offprint from the Mémoires de l'Académie des Sciences de Toulouse, Tom. III. Brassinne begins (pp. 11-46) with a summary of the contents of Fermat's Varia Opera published by his son Samuel in 1679. This is followed (pp. 47-131) with a summary of the six books of Diophantus' Arithmetica, together with the comments Fermat added in the margins of his copy of the 1621 edition of that work (one of which was Fermat's 'last theorem'). The remainder of the work reprints Fermat's correspondence with Mersenne, Pascal, Roberval and others. In view of the relative inaccessibility of the original works, for many 19th century mathematicians and historians this was the most accessible source for understanding Fermat's work before the publication of his Oeuvres (1891-1912).. 8vo: 220 x 140 mm. Hobbes, Thomas
[London] Printed in the Year 1679. 1588-1679 Octavo, 6.25 x 4 inches.. First edition, this title. [p]1, B-G8, H4, I-T8, V4. 286 pages. This is a clean copy, in seventeenth century boards, rebacked. Hobbes's history of the Great Rebellion, [sometimes titled] Behemoth, was completed in manuscript around 1668, when Hobbes was almost eighty years old. Some pirated editions were published in the late 1670's, but an authorized version of the book was not printed until 1682. In a letter of 19 June 1679, written a few months before his death, Hobbes explained the frustrating delay: 'I would fain have published my Dialogue of the Civil Wars of England,' long ago; and to that end I presented it to his Majesty: and some days after, when I thought he had read it, I humbly besought him to let me print it; but his Majesty, though he heard me graciously, yet he flatly refused to have it published.' Charles II may have hesitated to license the work, despite its outspoken championing of the royalist cause, because of its equally outspoken, but politically awkward anticlericalism. "Hobbes had developed an analytical framework for discussing sedition, rebellion, and the breakdown of authority in earlier works, particularly in De Cive (1642) and Leviathan (1651). His decision, late in life, to provide an account of the political convulsions that struck England between 1640 and 1660 gave him the opportunity to apply this framework historically. The book he dictated is cast as a discussion between a master A, and his pupil, B. Unlike a straightforward narrative, the dialogue format allowed Ho … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beaumont, Francis and John Fletcher
London: Printed by J. Macock for John Martyn, Henry Herringman, Richard Marriot, 1679. Hard Cover. Very Good. Hard Cover. SCARCE. Although this is the second edition of this collection of Beaumont and Fletcher';s Renaissance Comedies and Tragedies, it is considered the definitive edition because it includes a number of works that were not included in the 1647 folio.  This edition also includes actor lists and the songs that accompanied the plays. Bound in brown three quarter leather with marbled brown paper covered boards.  There is a leather title label in the second of five compartments with gilt title. There have been repairs to the leather over time and there are many scuffs and rubbing to both the spine and boards. The hinges are cracked but the text block is firm and tight. The frontispiece and the title page have been mounted in.  The title page has a narrow two inch tear on bottom right. The interior pages are clean with minor foxing and browning on many pages that do not affect the text. A previous owner has written in corresponding page numbers on the contents page in antiquated ink. There is a dark brown spot and tiny hole on one leaf.  Still in reasonably nice condition. The pagination runs to page 578, and then the numbering starts anew with the play The Queen of Corinth, and continues to page 557. .

(2),A-Z4 (Kk mismarked K, Nn mismarked N),Aa-Zz4,Aaa-Zzz4,Aaaa-Iiii4,Kkkk, Aaaaa-Ccccc4. A handsome copy with an inscription dated 1891, probably the date of the reback. Unbeliveably quirky pagination and signature markings, but complete. One of two states of this printing: This state shows two bars with catchword 'Calen-" on page 258, followed by p. 359, 'Calendarium Pastorale'. (A second state lacks the catchword, has 'Finis' between the bars on p. 258, an advertisement leaf, and then the 'Calendarium'.) Carpenter, p. 111. DNB suggests that this edition may have been edited by Dryden. Wing S4965. ESTC R7177. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
