Mainwaring, Sir Thomas
1679. Interesting for Its Discussion of Early Common-Law Authorities on Marriage Mainwaring, Sir Thomas [1623-1689]. The Legitimacy Of Amicia, Daughter Of Hugh Cyveliok Earl Of Chester, Clearly Proved. With Full Answers to All Objections that Have at Any Time been Made Against the Same. London: Printed for Sam. Lowndes, 1679. [x], 171, [1] pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4"). Contemporary speckled calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands to spine, marbled edges. Moderate rubbing to extremities, boards beginning to separate, but secured by cords. Title page printed in red and black. Moderate toning to text, small piece excised from rear endleaf, internally clean. $500. * Only edition. A sequel to the author's A Defence of Amicia. The 8-page preface gives a useful account of the endless pamphlet-war that following the publication of Defence in 1673, including an account of the controversy itself and the publications of Mainwaring's opponent, Peter Leicester. Amicia, the author's grandmother, was the wife of Ralph Mainwaring. Leicester, another descendant of Amicia, claimed that she was a bastard. This tract, like the others, is of legal interest for its discussion of the early common law authorities on marriage. Both authors had been students at Gray's Inn. The issue was eventually decided in Mainwaring's favor. OCLC locates 13 copies in North America, 1 in a law library (Ohio State). English Short-Title Catalogue R21678.

Tom Tickle-foot the Taborer, late Clerk to Justic Clodpate
London - A. Brewster, 1679. London - A. Brewster, 1679 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce pamphlet documenting the trials of Sir George Wakeman, WIlliam Marshal and James Corker, after their reported involvement in the Popish Plot during the reign of Charles II. Sir George Wakeman (died 1688) was an English royal physician to Catherine of Braganza, Consort of Charles II of England. In 1678, he was perjured by Titus Oates, who had gained backing of Thomas Osborne, 1st Earl of Danby, highly placed in government. Oates accused Wakeman of conspiring to kill the King with the help of and place his brother James, Duke of York on the throne in his place. At his trial in 1679 Wakeman was acquitted. The acquittal dealt a blow at credibility of the Plot, but there was a public backlash also. Wakeman went to Windsor to see the queen and king, and left the country. In the course of evidence given at subsequent trials Oates entirely ignored the verdict, and continued to speak of the bribe offered to and accepted by the queen's physician. Wakeman was back in London by 1685, and gave evidence against Oates on 8 May 1685, in his first trial for perjury. Nothing is known of his further career. He is Owen Bartletts ancestor. Condition: Disbound folio. Binding is tender, but holding. Pages are mildly browned but generally clean, with just the odd spot. Overall: GOOD..

Ephemera
prev The Andrew Jackson, a 1679 ton medium clipper, was built in Mystic in 1855. She was a fast sailer but, contrary to what this handbill would imply, set no records on any of her passages. On the date of the voyage advertised here - December 16, 1861 - her captain was Johnson. It is interesting to note that, just at this time, naval action in the Civil War was ramping up. The USS Constitution arrived at Ship Island at the mouth of the Mississippi River carrying the 26th Massachusetts Regiment to New Orleans, Great Britain began their embargo on US exports, and the naval blockade of the Confederate coast began to show results. This might explain the military theme of the handbill. However, despite the turmoil of the war, the text states that the Andrew Jackson might depart “by Christmas day, but certainly on or before the 1st of January.” The ship was sold to the British in 1863 and was lost in the Gaspar Straits in 1868. This handbill measures 9 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches and has a wonderful image of Jackson astride his horse, American flag behind, which also appeared on the 1862 clipper ship sailing card for the Andrew Jackson. That card also advertised her as “The Fastest Ship in the World!” Both the card and the handbill were printed by Nesbitt, of New York. The card is scarce, but the handbill is a rare, possibly unique, survival. In Fine condition.

There are in fact eighteen extra plays, The Wild Goose Chase has not been recognised as such in the "Catalogue". Ludwig XIV., König von Frankreich (1638-1715).
Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 18. II. 1679.. 9 SS. auf 6 (= 3 Doppel-)Blatt. Folio. "[...] [A] squadron of 20 or 30 ships that I might send to Sweden's aid would be too weak to withstand the forces of England; nor is it suitable to the state of my affairs to [...] support this war by putting to sea a flotilla equal to that Crown's [...] Sweden's affairs are everywhere in such a bad state, yet she does not blame her own ill conduct. I have even learned that her ruin in Prussia is so great that it is no longer possible to negotiate for peace with them until [Sweden is] convinced of the nearly invincible obstacles to naval assistance that they have expected from me [...] [S]ince the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Epigramm in der Leichenrede Lohensteins.- Titel gestempelt, leicht gebräunt u. kaum fleckig, Ebd. etw. berieben.# First edition of this collection of Hofmannswaldau's principal works. MISOMASTROPUS [Pseud.]
London, Printed for L. C. 1679 - [2],6p. Folio. Edges uncut. A very fine copy. Preserved in a fine elaborate purpose-made half red morocco slip case lettered in gilt. Sole edition. Wing B1166 L, O; CLC, MH, WF, Y. ESTC adds none. A lurid cautionary tale set in the form of a dream narrative in which an "unfortunate soldier of Venus, disgusted at having been Sold the French Commodity at so vast a rate", falls asleep and dreams of the fate that awaits his erstwhile paramour. After a trial in which a full account is given of the lady's life and behaviour, she is sentenced to rot: "thereupon her nose began presently to creep off her Face upon the backs of Maggots, her legs walk'd from under her, her Eyes (those once foolish Lovers Planets) became falling Stars, and dropt from their Orbs, lay like filthy Jelly upon the ground". Misogynistic tirades like this against the loathsome physical manifestations of mutability and decay in the bodies of women once admired for their beauty formed a minor genre in this libertine age and continued to flourish until well into the eighteenth century. Geber (Jabir Ibn Hayyan), Avicenna et al.
Lyons, Jean de Treves, 1679.. 8vo (171 x 112 mm). (4), 727, (1) pp. Contemp. vellum with ms. title to spine.. Scarce French edition of the alchemical works by "The Princes of Chemical Art", Geber the Arab and Avicenna, as well as of John Belye, John Dastin, Georg Horn, Francesco Maria Santinelli, Giovanni Bracesco, and others. Abu Musa Jabir ibn Hayyan (known as "Geber" in the Latin tradition) is the name of an author whose historical existence is under debate, but who, according to Arabic culture, is said to have lived in the second half of the eight century, been the head of a hermetic school, and left an extensive body of works on natural philosophy and alchemy. The rediscovery of Geber for the history of chemistry and alchemy was introduced by Hermann Kopp in the 19th century. Geber was an enthusiastic believer in the possibility of the transmutation of base metals into gold, by using a special elixir that could be connected to the theories about the famous Philosopher's Stone. Conversely, Avicenna, after al-Kindi, was one of the first philosophers to prefer scientific chemistry over the obscurer sides of alchemy. Following his practical laboratory experience, he discredited alchemical belief in the transmutation of substances, though acknowledging that they can produce the appearance of such a change. He described the process of steam distillation, used to obtain alcohol and essential oils, and invented the refrigerated coil, which condenses aromatic vapors. - Contemp. ms ownership of Jean Jacques Alferi to title page. All editions of this book are now rare. The seminal economic work of William Petty, in which he considers the best tax policies for promoting growth. He proposes use of the tax and spend method, with emphasis on taxing consumption and imports rather than income. In his view tax policy should be used to finance public spending by the State while keeping the accounts balanced. ?Petty is widely acknowledged to be a founder of classical political economy. Marx dubbed him "the father of English political economy" and praised his "audacious genius." Max Beer described Petty as "the pioneer of the English economics of production" and claimed that "he must be regarded as the initiator of classical English economics: he laid the foundations on which his successors?Smith and Ricardo?could erect their structures."
