BEGER, Lorenz - ARCUARIUS, Daphnaeus pseudonym -
[n.p.], MDCLXXIX [1679]. FIRST EDITION. 4to, pp. [xii], 249, [1] errata; title printed in red and black; some light browning in places, but generally clean throughout; in later sheep-backed pink boards; handwritten label on spine; boards sunned and vertical crack down centres of both covers. First edition of this unusual defence of polygamy by the German legal scholar, librarian, and numismatist Lorenz Beger (1653-1705). Beger was at the time of writing employed as the librarian to the Elector of the Palatinate, Karl Ludwig. Karl Ludwig had been married to Charlotte of Hessen-Kassel since 1650, and had two children with her. However, they were tempramentally very different, and there were tensions between the couple that led Karl Ludwig to fall in love with one of Charlotte's ladies-in-waiting, Luise von Degenfeld. In 1657 Charlotte discovered that Karl Ludwig and Luise had established a quasi-marital contract; Karl Ludwig discovered that he could not divorce her without changing the law, which he duly did, later marrying Luise. Karl Ludwig then sought to justify his earlier conduct, and was convinced that scriptural evidence could be found to justify polyamy. He charged the court librarian and antiquarian, Beger, to collate all the biblical passages which could be interpreted as a defence of the practice, and to write a book summarising and explaining these arguments; this book was then published under a pseudonym and sent to all the principal libraries in Germany, clearly as an attempt to restore Karl Ludwig's reputation in the eyes of some of his more sceptical peers. POLITI (Puliti), Alessandro. [Click Below for Full Description]

1679. Very rare copy in une superb and rare binding with the Great Royal Arms (Louis XIV) VALERIUS MAXIMUS 1st century AD Valère Maxime or Valerius Maximus is a Roman historian and moralist of the 1st century AD. AD contemporary of the Roman emperor Tiberius. BIOGRAPHY His life is very little known. Valère Maxime could be considered as a descendant of the Valeria people by his father and of Fabius Maximus by his mother. He served in Asia under Sextus Pompeius, consul in 14 and was admitted to the court of the Emperor Tiberius. He writes between 24 and 31 his work Memorable Facts Memorable Facts and Facts (Facta et dicta memorabilia) Valère Maxime composes between 24 and 31, the Facts and So-called Memorable, sometimes entitled Paroles Mémorables, a collection of anecdotes intended to feed the reflection and the speech of speakers and philosophers. In particular, he drew Roman examples of civil wars from the repertoire of a literature that has disappeared today, that of the accounts of proscription, which makes his writings precious. His point of view on the civil war is nevertheless nuanced, and moral: this can be explained on the one hand by the patronage of a descendant of Pompey and the pressure which could be exerted on the historians by Tiberius (whose subject on civil wars, again delicate to approach) and, on the other hand, on the contemporary example of Aulus Cremutius Cordus who, for having praised the assassins of César Brutus and Cassius, was ordered suicide in 25. The book is composed of 9 books, successively addressing religion (respect, contempt, lies, foreign … [Click Below for Full Description]

Various
A Sammelband of 23 Pamphlets from 1679-1701, By Various Authors, Including Titus Oats, Peter Gooden, John Turner, William Derrel, Gilbert Coles,Richard Kidder, Samuel Grascome, David-Nicolas Bertier, Robert Ware, & Phillip Ellis. All complete except one lacking a title page. A complete list and collation available on our website. Printed in London for Various Booksellers. The Volume is in Very Good Condition Bound in half-black morocco over cloth boards, with the spine divided into six compartments by five raised bands, with gilt lettering in the second and final compartments from the top. Externally the boards and spine are lightly scuffed, with wear to the spine but no splits, and with the board corners bumped a bit. Internally the leaves are generally clean and well margined, with the condition of the paper varying between titles, from light to moderate toning and light to moderate foxing throughout, as well as marginal and in-text notations from previous owners. This fascinating volume contains a great variety of controversialist pamphlets from the late seventeenth century. In England, this was the most prolific period for writing on Catholicism, with the specter of a potential catholic king looming over the kingdom for decades, from the exclusion crisis through the Jacobite uprisings of the early eighteenth century. Titus Oats is of course an important author, due to his instigating much of the Hysteria over James II with the Popish Plot. Though it proved to be entirely a fabrication, the implication of the plot roused mass panic, and several people were executed befor … [Click Below for Full Description]

POLITI (Puliti), Alessandro. [Click Below for Full Description]

Se hai dubbi o domande, ti invitiamo a contattarci. Copia molto rara in une rilegatura superba e rara con le Grandi Armi Reali (Luigi XIV) Valerius Maximus I secolo d.C. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

The Feign'd Curtizans last appeared at auction in 1974. Almost a decade into her career as England's first professional female playwright, Aphra Behn continued to gain confidence in pushing against the social strictures confining her countrywomen. The Feign'd Curtizans is part of this larger project, depicting virtuous sisters Marcella and Cornelia who leave their lives as respectable ladies of the court and pose as courtesans to escape the fates planned for them by their father. For while Marcella is in love with Sir Henry Fillamore, she has been promised in marriage to Octavio; and Cornelia as a younger daughter has been committed to holy orders and convent life. An interesting letter discussing the persecution of Roman Catholics in England. The Church of England had taken over as the standard Church in England after the 1530s and Henry VIII's separation from the Roman church. After this, Catholics became persecuted within England. An example of fervent anti-Catholic attitude of England at this time was the fabrication of the Popish Plot by Titus Oates, which alleged that there was a solid and extensive Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II. Oates is referenced to by the author of this treatise, mentioning Oates' plot as an example of the persecution against the Catholics. The author references the innocent men who were killed after suspicion that was thrown upon them by Titus Oates, with at least fifteen men being killed from 1678-1681 due to Oates. POLITI (Puliti), Alessandro. [Click Below for Full Description]
