Thomas a Kempis
Elzevir, Amsterdam. Bound by the bookbinder to King Louis XV, Padeloup, a beautiful 1679 Elzevir family edition of the seminal The Imitation of Christ (in Latin) by Thomas a Kempis, with Dutch Gilt endpapers. About the Binder- "Antoine Michel Padeloup was made binder to the king, Louis XV. (17I5—1748), in 1733, after Boyet’s death; he placed his mark on books belonging to Queen Maria Leczinska, the Dauphin, D'Hoym, Bonnier de la Mosson, and the Marquise de Pompadour. Padeloup is noted for good solid binding; the decorations he used, though poor in conception, are marvels of careful execution." (A History of the Art of Bookbinding, Brassington, 1884). Although this copy does not have a Padeloup ticket, an almost exactly matching board decoration is found on a Padeloup ticketed binding pictured in the 1935 publication, French Signed Bindings in the M. L. Schiff Collection (De Ricci, see example #13). About The Imitation of Christ - The Imitation of Christ (Latin: De Imitatione Christi) by Thomas à Kempis is a Christian devotional book. It was first composed in Latin ca. 1418–1427. It is a handbook for spiritual life arising from the Devotio Moderna movement, of which Kempis was a member. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read Christian devotional work next to the Bible, and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. Its popularity was immediate, and it was printed 745 times before 1650. Apart from the Bible, no book has been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ. The text is divided into four books, which provide detailed spiritual instruc … [Click Below for Full Description]

J. B. (pseud. of Henry Nevill)
(London): s.n., 1679. First Edition, First Issue (assume). Folded Sheet. Very Good. [caption title] Small folio (11-3/4 inches [30 cm] tall), pp. 4, signed "J.B."; toning and light soil, lacking self wrappers, issue with a comma after Godfrey instead of a period, pen notation "Henry Nevill alias Paine" in an old hand at the end of the caption title. Nevill, a known Papist, was implicated and held for suspicion of involvement in the Popish Plot. Ref. The Manuscripts of the House of Lords 1678-1693, pp. 78 and 154. A pamphlet written and published to help assert Danby's complicity in the Popish Plot. Godfrey, a magistrate involved in the investigation of the Popish Plot, was found face down in a ditch with a sword run though him ("That he was found with his own Sword through his Body;" from p. 3 ) just under his left breast. Suicide was quickly ruled out by the discovery that he had been strangled to death first - very tidy indeed. Wing B127. Ref. Oxford Dictionary of National Biography; OCLC.

Wolff, Christian
Philosophia practica universalis methodo scientifica pertractata. Pars prior theoriam complectens, qua omnis actionum humanarum differentia omnisque juris ac obligationum omnium principia a priori demonstrantus. 592 Seiten plus Register. Extrem rare erste Ausgabe, leider in wirklich schlechtem Zustand, Halbledereinband sehr berieben, mit Fehlstellen, wellig, Leder löst sich ab. Innengelenk gebrochen. Seiten gebräunt, die ersten 50 Seiten mit Wasserfleck, im hinteren Vorsatz ein Stempel. Christian Wolff (1679-1754) was an outstanding philosopher and mathematician. His philosophy is close to that of Leibnitz, and his system can be seen as a modification of the philosophy of Leibnitz. Wolff held almost undisputed sway in Germany till his philosophy was displaced by the Kantian revolution. The merits of Wolff's philosophy are his comprehensive view of philosophy, as embracing in its survey the whole field of human knowledge, his insistence everywhere on clear and methodic exposition, and his confidence in the power of reason to reduce all subjects to this form. To these must be added that he was practically the first to 'teach philosophy to speak German'.
