Wolff, Christian
Philosophia practica universalis methodo scientifica pertractata. Pars prior theoriam complectens, qua omnis actionum humanarum differentia omnisque juris ac obligationum omnium principia a priori demonstrantus. 592 Seiten plus Register. Extrem rare erste Ausgabe, leider in wirklich schlechtem Zustand, Halbledereinband sehr berieben, mit Fehlstellen, wellig, Leder löst sich ab. Innengelenk gebrochen. Christian Wolff (1679-1754) was an outstanding philosopher and mathematician. His philosophy is close to that of Leibnitz, and his system can be seen as a modification of the philosophy of Leibnitz. Wolff held almost undisputed sway in Germany till his philosophy was displaced by the Kantian revolution. The merits of Wolff's philosophy are his comprehensive view of philosophy, as embracing in its survey the whole field of human knowledge, his insistence everywhere on clear and methodic exposition, and his confidence in the power of reason to reduce all subjects to this form. To these must be added that he was practically the first to 'teach philosophy to speak German'.

It is a commentary on Books 47 and 48 of Justinian's Digest with an additional treatise on the municipal law of Utrecht. Distinguished for its erudition, literary quality and critical use of original sources, rather than later commentaries, it was one of the first modern commentaries on Roman criminal law. A highly successful work, it reached its final edition in 1761. It remains an authority today in South Africa and other nations with roots in Roman-Dutch law. As von Bar observes, Matthaeus "went back to the sources of the Roman law, as distinct from Germanic and Canon law acquiring, for this reason, a wide influence abroad in the field of sc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richard Mayo
1679. Two Conferences: One Betwixt a Papist and a Jew, the Other Betwixt a Protestant and a Jew: In Two Letters from a Merchant in London, to his Correspondent in Amsterdam. By Richard Mayo Published by Tho. Parkhurst 1679 Contains conference between Papist and a Jew only. Missionary tract. Judaica. (2), 30pp. Richard Mayo (c1630-1695) was a clergyman and ejected minister. "Under the initials N. H., Mayo published 'A Conference betwixt a Papist and a Jew' (1673) and 'Two Conferences '(1677); the latter enjoyed at least six editions, that of 1754 bearing the title 'Two Disputations Concerning the Messiah'. In both Mayo argued that the Church of Rome, with its 'lying wonders and feigned miracles', gave a 'stab to the Christian Faith' by discrediting the best evidence that Jesus was the Messiah, the miracles he and his immediate followers performed". - ODNB Condition: Disbound. Some repairs to the guttering. Occasional tide mark. Small hole in the title page under the word 'his'. Some very light scattered foxing and occasional mark. Stab holes to the gutter. Small pencil inscription to tile page verso.

A very good copy. Andre Felibien was the Royal Historiographer of buildings, arts and manufacture. "The Grotte representing the dwelling of the sea goddess Thetis, was designed by Charles Perrault and constructed in the north parterre of the chateau of Versailles... Scholars, historians, and art historians of Versailles have long appreciated André Felibien's Description de la Grotte as a panegyric account of one of the most celebrated monuments of Louis XIV's first garden program for Versailles.1 The Grotto of Thetis, begun c. 1664/5 and completed c. 1674, was destroyed in 1682 in preparation for the extension of the northern wing of the château.
